The Mustanger and the Lady (2017)
very disappointed
Was hoping for a good flick, but alas, not happening here. Good performance by David T Jenkins, but I'm still trying to figure out what the story was. A less than glacial pace might have helped. Mystified by the high ratings this thing has until you realize they are all one review wonders. Another thing thats telling is the fact there are zero external reviews linked to this film.
Prisoners (2013)
Pure , totally unbelievable garbage
SPOILERS GALORE SPOILER ALERT Don't LOOK SPOILERS BELOW (well, if you can spoil something that's already rotten)
LAUGH-able.
are you kidding me? Terrence Howard and his wife don't go to jail as accomplices? Jackman KIDNAPS someone and beats him senseless for a week? and I actually did LAUGH out loud when they finally showed the kids face after a week of beatings. It looked like a bad Halloween mask. Totally unrealistic, just ridiculous. An he can beat him to a pulp but hitting they bad guys fingers with a hammer is where he draws the line? BAHAHAHA And then there was Jackman's useless worthless whining wife. What a horrible part poorly played. And oh yeah, I kept waiting for the air bag in the dash of the police car to explode when Jackman was pounding on it. And the real bad guy is an old woman? oh and let's linger on the maze medallion the first time we see it so we can show it again later when Gyllenhal, "great" detective that he was, has apparently forgotten seeing it around a DEAD guys neck three hours ago.Sorry but Jake just wasn't bringing it in this, he just looked like an idiot and you cant tell me he wouldn't have been fired for telling his police captain BOSS to f off. Lots of badly telegraphed crap like that whistle too. And in the end Jackman goes to jail but they don't bother to show that or the effect on his family. Just garbage, but Jackman himself at least did a good job where as Howard was just bad. Really glad he ain't Tony Stark's guy any more.
Seriously, you know why this doesn't work? Because once Jackman starts beating the kid up, he becomes a criminal too REGARDLESS of why he's beating up the kid. Once your hero does something despicable, you lose sympathy for him immediately and even more so in the end when you find out the poor schmuck he pummeled isn't the bad guy anyway.
The Bourne Legacy (2012)
pure garbage, laughable
SPOILERS IN MAIN BODY I don't understand a lot of the 5 and 6 star ratings other reviewers gave this film, only to say how really bad it was in their review. I won't make that mistake. This thing stinks. A 2 is generous.
SPOILERS AHEAD I thought Bourne and his clones were supposed to be smart? If it's me and I have a tracking device that I've dug out of my leg, I'm throwing it in a river, crushing it with a rock, burning it up in a fire. NOT cramming it down a wolf's throat. By the way, taping a PIE PLATE over the GPS tracking device WILL NOT block the signal since it emits a signal in a 360 degree pattern. Then there is the "haunted house" in the woods. When you have to show a spiral staircase shot in a house with someone walking down the stairs to answer a routine phone call just to fill screen time, you know your in trouble. Oh, wait I know how to make this better. Let's throw in a whole bunch of redundant flashbacks and fill in drivel regarding the other Bourne movies. not so good. okay let's go from running in the woods to flying a plane. Did he steal the plane? rent it? Hijack it? And, oh yeah, let's throw in a scene of Renner changing clothes in the woods next to a car. None of these "scenes" do ANYTHING to drive the story forward. This film is a good example of what's wrong with Hollywood today and tells YOU the average theater goer, just how totally stupid they think you are.
Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull (2008)
thank god the film broke...and I don't even believe in god
While I'm sure it will make lots of money, IT SUCKS. I was debating if I should walk out when the film broke, and if that wasn't a sign I don't know what was, so I hit the bricks Harrison just looks OLD, Shia appears to be trying to "act" like Marlon Brando (and does it horribly as you might imagine). Expository dialog out the YANG and none of it any good, the same old graphics of the plane flying to Peru or the amazon or who cares. OUT OF FOCUS since Shia never hit his mark and the "action" sequences were a BIG HO HUM. Save your money and go see Iron Man again or for the first time. THATS actually a good movie. At least Downey is perfectly cast, the action is good and even though the ending is predictable its not a twenty year old plot thats rehashed until its a parody of itself.
The Number 23 (2007)
cinematically well done, but not a big enough payoff
I saw this at a screening and while the story is actually pretty good with only a couple of holes, there is no big payoff and when the real deal is "discovered" near the end of the film, it was like oh, okay. Then you start asking your self why Virginia Madsen's character would do some of the things she did during the course of the movie. You could see it coming and it wasn't a real shock or surprise. It also wasn't as dark as the trailers made it seem. I was antsy through the first hour since it seemed to take forever to develop. There was a lot of voice-over material as well, so instead of visually seeing the story unfold, you have it read to you (It would actually work just as well as a radio show for that matter). There are a couple of interesting camera shots, some good cinematography and Jim's performance is atypical for him (in that it is not his usual comedic fare) and actually very good, but there really is nothing spectacular scene wise that warrants watching this on the big screen. rent it on a slow night.
Venom (2005)
blood, guts and gore galore
I saw this movie at a screening as well and it must have been a different version than the reviewer who thought it was "pure $hite". While the acting for the most part is typical teenager and a little disappointing except for the bad guy, the film looks fantastic, the actions sequences are great as well as the kills, some of which were hard to watch due to their realism. In this version at least, the cheesy special effects seem to be gone or at least vastly improved from what the other reviewer saw. It moves pretty well except for a few scenes of obligatory explanations regarding the voodoo deal and "teen angst", but there are a couple of really good scares as well as a good sustained overall tension throughout. The kills are brutal for the most part with one exception thats kind of lame, but the fight sequence close to the end is especially effective and looks just great as well as what has to be some new scenes, possibly even a new ending, since the lighting and overall look is so different from the rest of the film, but it still looks great. In my humble opinion it's definitely worth seeing and an R rating based on the blood and gore if thats what you expect from a horror movie. Gillespie definitely knows how to make an audience squirm.
