Siu nin Wong Fei Hung chi: Tit ma lau (1993)
Amazing, Slightly Comedic, Killer Kung Fu Good Fun
I finally saw this movie, after years of wanting to see it, and I'm glad I finally watched it. It wasn't what I was expecting, which was another martial arts epic along the lines of "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon", but in spite of missing my expectations, it was still a FANTASTIC movie.
Reminiscent of the classic martial arts films of the past, the movie has a slightly fast-forward manic pace that ends up being rather fun. The English dubbed dialogue at first seems to have a large cheese factor, but it ends up being a good cheese, like a nice Gouda. The over-the-top laughter of the villains is GREAT! The story is good, with a bit of a Robin Hood twist, and of course, the martial arts are AMAZING. Their "Kung Fu is strong".
If a martial arts movie doesn't end up being a Crouching Tiger, or Hero, then THIS is what it should be.
AVP: Alien vs. Predator (2004)
We didn't lose
This was a great film, exciting, scary, entertaining and fun. As one of my kids said afterword, "that didn't seem like it was over 2 hours!". The movie was over, and we wanted more. My other kid said "that was the best movie I've seen yet". They're both ready to see it again, or see a possible sequel. Anderson did a good job with this, and should be proud of himself. The little touches that tied this movie into the Alien series were well done, including the use of "the knife trick". The only gripe I have is the tagline used in the commercials..."Whoever wins, we lose"...not at all accurate once you've seen the movie. Better would have been "If the serpent gets free, we all lose".
Identity (2003)
Ahhhhhh!!!
Identity scared the CR*P out of me!!! I am a huge fan of the horror/thriller genre, but in recent years, it's become harder and harder to find a movie that can truly scare me out of my seat. I was starting to think that it was because I had become desensitized. Now I realize it's because movie makers weren't doing it right. A truly intense movie, Identity takes you through the dark tunnels of fear and humanity's twisted side. The plot twists will keep you guessing, but not so much so that you end up lost. Ultimately, everything makes sense, even if it upsets you. This is the thriller movie at its finest.
A Simple Twist of Fate (1994)
A Wonderful Touching Movie
This movie is one of the best that Steve Martin has done. The only people who wouldn't like this movie would have to be fans of Martin from The Jerk and The Man With Two Brains, neither of which movie I enjoy in the slightest. Thank the heavens that Mr. Martin broke out of his stereotype, and showed us he can REALLY act. Coming a long way from his thankfully bygone days as the Jerk, Martin shows us his tender side, in a touching portrayal of a bitter hermit saved by the love of an orphan child. While it was not the laugh a minute comedy I was mislead to expect by the promotions for this movie, I still enjoyed every moment of it. Warm, sad, happy, and wistfully funny, it's a movie that can be watched many times and not lose its magic. And the Austin sisters who portray Mathilda at 5 and 11 are absolutely wonderful, and are a perfect fit with Martin.
