Pig (2021)
A good pig is hard to find.
Nicholas Cage plays a laid back role, especially for him. I kept expecting him to go John Wick but instead he got more and more Zen, which was a pleasant surprise. He lives a hermit life in the forest with his truffle pig as his only companion. He loves his pig; no, not in that way, as he is forced to clarify at one point, but as a companion animal like a dog. Of course his happy life is interrupted when some tweakers steal the cute little porker, so he goes on a mission to rescue her. This is where I expected it go the way of one of his other movies, Mandy, but it doesn't. It becomes a fairly subtle and understated expansion of his character as we are given insight into his past and his path. I enjoyed the movie and thought Cage showed real skill as an actor, but felt a little dissatisfied at the conclusion, despite it's being consistent with the plot. I guess that's just me wanting an extra twist in the tail to make me really sit up and take notice. This movie seemed more French film noir style instead of the Hollywood we are used to from Nick.
A.I. Rising (2018)
Wooden acting, boring story
The actors have no charisma, at no stage did I feel anything for either of the two main characters. The male lead has a thick accent that made some of his dialogue unintelligible, but it didn't matter much because I didn't care what he was saying. The female lead plays a robot who supposedly develops feelings, but she was not convincing as a robot and was not likable as a human. The story meanders towards it's boring conclusion at a snails pace, I really wanted to skip forward 10 minutes at most points in the movie. The cinematography was pretty good which is a nice way of saying that the best thing about this movie are the scenes in the background. Don't waste your time.
