Operation Fortune: Ruse de Guerre (2023)
Not great, but fun...except for....
Thought about what I did and didn't like... Relatively weak but still fun story with (mostly) fun roles. Jason was typical likable badass Statham. Both Josh and Hugh were funny and really well played. Bugzy and Cary were very good in support. But Aubrey Plaza seemed badly miscast. The majority of her lines seemed badly written or badly delivered. They almost sounded like unfunny improvised lines that missed their mark. I can think of many other serious and comedic actresses who could've pulled off her roles and possibly the same lines more successfully. I hate to say this, but I would enjoy watching more of these characters in continued escapades...if Aubrey's character is recast or much better written.
The Line (2021)
Pretty good until they showed victim's side
I was okay with the biased view until they showed the "victim's" side. These are people in war times. The enemy is the enemy, young or old, in an environment where the enemy could be anyone. The fact that the victim was young and duped to join ISIS means nothing for the soldiers fighting them everyday. Not knowing who the "innocents" are in a situation makes one not supportive of the enemies' position/stance. First and foremost it's about keeping your people safe in a hostile environment and sympathy for the enemy is not the largest priority. It's the way of war. It can be ugly, but it's the truth. All wars fought on hostile turf have been that way.
Top Gun: Maverick (2022)
Fun with far fetched action and bad script
Concept was pretty good...except for an embarrassingly cheesy script and tons of plot holes. Full of predictable action with far fetched and non-believable situations, more even so than the original. The mission run for the target felt like I was watching a Star Wars rip-off run on the Deathstar. Only saving graces were the action that was still rather fun and the great cinematography though. Maverick and/or Rooster should've died. Would've made for a better more believable ending. Smh. And what a forced lame unneeded romance angle that fit in less than romance in the original. Please...no more sequels to this.
Licorice Pizza (2021)
Why bother? What's the appeal?!
Characters I care nothing about. What's the appeal?! I love a lot of movies from all kinds of genres and themes, but I went back and looked at Anderson's filmography to find that I have seen 7 of his and I have rated NONE of his above a 5 out of 10. I noticed a theme. All have main characters that I cared nothing about and I couldn't wait for the movies to end. And I've never even considered watching any of them more than once and I'll watch most movies a second time.
Red Joan (2018)
Noble or naive?
I believe this was intentionally filmed to show her actions as defendable, at worst, or understandable, at best. Sadly the character was just manipulated by a slick idealist into making poor choices. Believable? Yes. Does it make it okay? No. The answer: Naive.
The Irishman (2019)
Good, but...
It was great to see all the heavyweights in what looks like a last hurrah for them all. That being said Deniro was badly cast in the lead because of his age. In my eyes, Deniro should've played Pacino's role and cast someone younger (possibly Tom Hardy or DiCaprio). That or better de-aging like they used ironically in the Marvel movies. Also, way too long. Several scenes could've easily been left in the cutting room.
Marriage Story (2019)
Nothing new...
Worthy of watching once, but never again. Great acting, but nothing new to see here. As overrated as Kramer vs Kramer as a messy divorce story.
The Shape of Water (2017)
Haven't we seen this before?
A role-reversed R-rated horror version of Splash. The creature is pretty much a combination of the one from Hellboy and The Creature From The Black Lagoon. Not bad, but disappointing.
