A Cult Masterpiece

Well there are a lot of movies dealing with this subject that is relationship between a parent and a child. Where they would highlight several misunderstandings between the parent and the child. But this film had an intense touchy mood by the content it provided.

The story goes like this Amudhavan (The character played by Mammooty) is dejected after his wife abandons him and their child (Played by Sadhana), who has cerebral palsy. He struggles to take care of his daughter as she is about to enter her puberty while society constantly rejects him.

The mood of the film is kept monotonous and in several sequences there are no dialogues too. But this bond of a struggling father and a spastic child didn't need a dialogue to enhance the situation. The expressions were enough to highlight such a beautiful relationship. Moreover, the movie is narrated in a unique manner. A chapter wise narration, were each and every chapter is personified with the contrast of nature. The second brilliant thing about this movie was the performances. Sadhana as the spastic girl and Mammooty as a father stole the whole show. I have never seen someone performing with such brilliance at a very young age which Sadhana did, with much ease and confidence. Mammooty too gave a spectacular performance. I remember in one of the sequences he tried to imitate his own daughter and later confessed that it is really brutal to compare one person with another. I think this scene should be categorized as one of the most iconic scenes in the history of Indian Cinema. Each chapter personified with the contrast to nature showcased how we as people exploit such human beings as if they are a burden to us. And also showed many shades of human nature. Moreover, the thing which will captivate you more is this father who just wants his kid to remain happy. And a spastic kid dealing with her puberty.

Talking about the technical aspects, the Cinematography of the movie is great. From the riverside shots till the distorted vision through the perspective of a spastic girl is something which should be appreciated. Moreover, in several sequences the father-daughter moments captured in slow motion is something which holds up the innocence of this movie. The editing too is great were the transition in between few chapters is done using a fog sequence through the river.

I personally loved this movie. And will highly highly recommend. The movie has a different kind of magic which will surely shape you as a human being.

An Offbeat yet effective attempt.
10 July 2020
A very hard hitting plot highlighted and presented with simplicity and generosity. Setting up home in a war like situation is not easy but the makers didn't disappoint us in any aspect. I am regretting the fact that I am watching this movie so lately. One thing I need to say is that though there was a political aspect, innocence throughout the movie was intact. And the writting of the script is really done brilliantly were each and every character has a backstory. And the camera work was too good. The whole situation recorded within the 4 walls of the house. The main highlight of the whole movie is the performances. From a caring sister, a beloved mother, an overprotective grandmother and most importantly a dad who can go to any extent just to see a smile on his son's face. I personally loved the movie and will highly highly recommend it. Its a political drama executed in a simple manner which is rarely seen. So if you miss it, you will probably miss one of the best works.

A Pure Musical and Visual Retreat with a loose screenplay.
3 July 2020
An offbeat love story between a Sufi Saint and mute Hindu girl which I was extremely excited to watch. From the plot till narration style everything was great. But what I didn't get was the magic of the screenplay. It may be because I am too obsessed with Mani Ratnam's work that I search his unique magic in every love story. So, the main highlight of the whole film were the performances especially the chemistry between the two lead characters Dev Mohan as a Sufi Saint with an infectious smile and non other than Aditi Rao Hydari as mute girl with a unique charm. The expressions delivered by her in few frames are just phenomenal, I remember last time I enjoyed the same charm was in Mani Ratnam's Kaatru Veliyidai. Moreover, the visuals and locations in contrast with the addictive music are really great. Especially, the camera work of each and every minute details from the frame. Be it a drone shot of a Sufi dance or the close up shot of a longing girl. But the thing which could have been better was the Screenplay. If the Screenplay would have been a little better then this would have stand out from the rest of the Romantic Fairy Tales. Moreover, the idea, the attempt and the performances were great. You can give it a watch as a visual retreat.

A Dark Tale of Love.
29 June 2020
This film really deserves its due credits. The narrative itself is so much touchy that the dark and raw essence of the emotion is still intact in it. A beautiful love story taking such a dark turn. The first thing which is to be appreciated is the performances. I would say each and everyone were great but Nivin Pauly took his dark character seriously to the next level. Playing a guy who hides his pain in the first part and then as a drug addict in the second one. Its unbelievable that it is the same guy I witnessed as a tamed personality in Bangalore Days. Roshan Mathew too, in a short screen time without uttering a single dialogue beautifully potrayed a character through his spellbound expressions and his eyes. The camera work too is phenomenal. The panning of the camera for recording the rain sequence and atlast the distorted camera work during the outburst of the character was something brilliantly done. Moreover, the messaging of the film is very much touchy and surely one of a kind. I will surely recommend this movie. Do give it a watch. Its something which probably you have never witnessed with such an ease.

A Cult Masterpiece
28 June 2020
One of the best series ever produced by Netflix. Each and every aspect of the series was great. First appreciation goes to the writers. For writing each and every character in a unique and incredible manner, were each and everyone have their own shades. Secondly, the narrative and the narration style. In Season 1 and Season 2 the screenplay is designed in such a manner that people automatically engage themselves into it. The illustration of the narrative in a backward sequence made the audience crazy about the show. And in Season 3 finally revealing the real mysteries behind all those time travel incidents, the parallel world concept and the introduction of a new concept called Quantum Entanglement was really awesome. The performances were great. The Cinematography, Sound Designing, Colour Palate every technical aspect was seriously one of a kind. The ending was seriously very much emotional but that was a justice to all the mess related to the family trees.

Not meant for the faint hearted.
26 June 2020
From the directors of Ajji here comes another film which is much much darker with its concept, highlights numerous social issues with its tonality and narrative. The main highlight of the whole film was the narrative. The narrative itself is written in such a manner where you will find each and every character highlighted in a unique manner, and each one having their own shades. The performances were solid including the ensemble cast. Each and every performance stand out in various ways. Be it Ipshita Chakraborty Singh & Virat Vaibhav as the sister-brother duo or even Abhishek Banerjee in a short role as a Kattar Bihari. But the showsteller were Manoj Bajpayee as Bhonsle, a retired cop and Santosh Juvekar as an over-ambitious Kattar Marathi. The colour palate and the realistic sound design used in the whole film made it more dark and gritty. There are few sequences where there is no dialogue but the actions of the characters conveyed a lot about their nature which was truely a great approach. The film is mainly shot using the close up frame that too in a man-handed manner which made the audience connect with the character. Last thing which was exceptional was the constant relation between the deity of Lord Ganesha and the main character Bhonsle. The plot of the film is realistic and not meant for the faint hearted. I personally loved the film and will surely recommend this. Do give it a watch if you like it raw and dark.

Hard Hitting Plot highlighted in a Folklore
25 June 2020
A hard hitting social issue highlighted with the help of a folklore that too set in the early years of Bengal. One thing I must appreciate is Anushka Sharma's initiative as a producer to help in the making of such a content. Secondly, the narrative itself is much much realistic and matured. But it more over belongs to a revenge drama genre than a horror film. The writing of the film is remarkably done. Each and every character have their own shades to show and own ideology to follow. The performances were gold be it Rahul Bose in dual character, or Paoli Dam as a catalyst in every situation. But the showsteller was Tripti Dimri. Yes, there some issues with the screenplay and background score. But overall the film deals with some realistic approach of feminism. I personally loved the idea and will highly highly recommend it. Its a must watch.

Thriller with Tinches Of Dark Comedy
21 June 2020
This time Rajat Kapoor surprises everyone with his new directorial venture a crime thriller with tinches of Dark Comedy. The plot is hard hitting and much realistic but the way the satire has been presented is something which is phenomenal. The enlightenment of the comedy punchlines and highlighting a society which only wants their piece of pie through this murder mystery made it really really engaging. The sound Designing and the colour palate made it even more interesting. The performances too were great being it Ranvir Shorey, Rajat Kapoor, or the main highlight Cyrus Sahukar as a hypocrite made it much more phenomenal. I loved this film and will highly highly recommend it. Do give it a watch.

Let it be personal 🙃
18 June 2020
A film which honestly talks about love. A film which endlessly explores what is love and why you should calmly wait for it. And the way the shots have been taken, all through the perspective of a documentary maker is something which makes the movie phenomenal. There are several sequences in the movie where you will be confused if the protagonist is Pramit, the character played by Ritwick Chakraborty or the audience who is seeing the film fully through their perspective. The whole film shot with help of just a handcam. Second highlight of the film is the performances. Aparajita was in a dual character throughout the movie and Ritwick's expressions during the loss of his love was mind blowing. This director Pradipta Bhattacharyya is highly highly underrated because the film he has made especially this one is absolutely amazing and out of the box too. The movie ends in an open ended way leaving a question mark. This film is really close to my heart and will highly highly recommend it. Do give it a watch if you truely love real cinema.

Magic of Mani Ratnam retained.
17 June 2020
One of the sweetest romantic dramas I witnessed this year. The reason why I admire Mani Ratnam as a filmmaker is his narrative style and the selection of frames. He gave two perspective of two different relationships just by peeping the camera through the door taking the whole shot with the frame of the door. In several sequences he places the camera diagonally especially on the train where on one side of the camera he takes the shot of the couple and on the other hand a running train sequence is being shot. Second highlight of the film is the performances Dulqueer Salman and Nithiya Menen both are unique with their own charm in front of the camera. Thats why I consider both as the best pair in Tamil Cinema. Prakash Raj and Leela Samson too gave a great performance throughout the movie. The movie was remade in several languages but the Tamil Version among all of them shines out the brightest especially due its lead and ensemble cast. I personally loved the movie and will highly highly recommend it.

A complete visual retreat
15 June 2020
A path breaking journey of a man to find his true love which goes through several heartbreaking moments. The sweetness of the performances by each and every person is the main highlight especially by Nivin Pauly, Sai Pallavi and Madona Sebastian. Secondly, the execution is highly appreciable which had gone at the top notch level. The movie is a visual retreat with some of the best natural and close up shots especially, during the admiring scene. I personally loved the idea and would highly recommend it. Do give it a watch.

A Realistic Culinary Drama
13 June 2020
A culinary drama presented in a realistic and thought provoking manner. It shows how the society still sets bars over a whole community just due to their different food habits. The movie showcases some really hilarious situations which will make you ROFL and again highlights the sensitivity of some gruesome topics which will somehow reveal the naked and ugly society. What I loved about the movie was the performances were you will notice a really cute Sayani Gupta, the camera panning and the sound Designing which made each and every scene engaging. I personally loved the idea of this movie and will highly highly recommend. Do give it a watch.

Simple yet Engaging
13 June 2020
Few films try to remain simple but the simplicity creates a wonderful atmosphere especially when things are justified through the actions. This film is a perfect example of it. Throughout the movie no dialogues have been spoken but the actions justified that love has no language. First thing which I found great was the performances. Both Basabdatta and Ritwick did not deliver a single dialogue throughout the movie but their on screen expressions made the film beautiful. Secondly, the Cinematography was lit. Panning of the camera just to utilize the shadow sequence was a brilliant idea. Thirdly sound Designing was the main highlight of the film. Utilising realistic sound, retro songs playing on the radio is what highlighted each and every situation beautifully. I personally loved it and would highly highly recommend. Do give it a watch if you want to experience a silent film.

A Heartwarming Political Satire
12 June 2020
A very heart warming story yet a political satire executed in a much much monotonous manner. From nuisances of the two main leads, Shoojit Sircar gave a delicate message regarding greed and possession. The different shades of human nature highlighted in a humorous manner. The Cinematography of the movie was really awesome. The way the shots have been taken throughout Lucknow, it gave birth to a different cinematic perception. It includes some great performances like the ones from Big B, Vijay Raaz and Shristi Shrivastava. But I found Ayushman Khurana's performance a bit underwhelming in comparison to his previous performances. That may be due to the fake accent which he tried to make while delivering dialogues. Still the movie itself is one of a kind and beautiful like any other Shoojit Sircar's film. Do give it a watch.

Criminally Underrated
9 June 2020
When someone asks me what is a criminally underrated webseries, I show them this. From a platform which is well known for its highly sensual content, this thing was totally unexpected. The performances being the main highlight throughout the show which include Naveen Kasturia, Patralekha and the showsteller Rajkumar Rao as Subhash Chandra Bose. Second thing which is to be appreciated is the makeup. The artist spell boundedly dedicated his soul towards it thats why Rajkumar Rao looked exactly like Bose and Naveen Kasturia as a perfect British Chamcha. Last but not the least the narrative and the narration style itself gave it a top notch perspective to a realistic storyline. Do give it a watch. The series sheds light on the true incidents which are considered as fake in a real world.

Heartwrenching and Sweet
7 June 2020
A very heart wrenching and unique love story set in the times of today. The film captures some brilliant and out of the box poetic lines which make it more special. The concept and the plot itself had some sweetness in it. The Cinematography is also damn good the frames capture some tinch of the retro Calcutta set in the modern times. What made me more engaging is the narration style were each and every incident is narrated slowly and with those heartwarming poetic lines. The performances too were awesome. And this is the best love story movie I watched in recent times. I personally loved the idea and would highly recommend it.

An Underrated Gem
5 June 2020
A very hard hitting and sensitive film highlighted in a realistic manner from the point of view of an autistic girl. The film in numerous manner shows human emotions and how they all are related to metaphors. I wonder how this Bangla Film flopped at the box office. It has got some really good performances like the one from Swastika and also this autistic girl played by Ritwika Paul. The film shows the complicated relationship between a frustated mother and an simple autistic girl. The Background Score and Cinematography of the movie is something of nxt level. By using an Ukulele and a Piano they gave sensational perspective to this murder Mystery. I would highly highly recommend this movie. Do give it a watch if you love realistic murder Mysteries.

Survival Drama with a social message
3 June 2020
Well it was really unexpected from a director to present a Survival cum Psychological Thriller with tinches of Dark Comedy too, which actually gave a social message of how so called simple and silly pranks can take dark and bizzare turn. The story itself keeps changing its genre with its brilliant execution, like in the first half it moreover appeared as a Survival Drama but later on it ended up moreover as a Psychological Thriller with tit-bits of Dark Comedy elements too. The performances were really really awesome, especially Amala Paul with a complete showstelling performance. And the writer too should be appreciated for presenting such a script. I would highly highly recommend this movie. Do give it a watch.

Same old storyline but a Superb Execution.
1 June 2020
The only flaw which I found was the story was very much common, the same old revenge drama. But the most interesting part is the narration style and execution. The narrative itself took the storyline beyond next level. And secondly the performances were really really awesome. Be it Disha Patani, Anil Kapoor, Kunal Khemu or the offbeat Aditya Roy Kapoor each and everyone were at their best. Do give it a watch since Mohit Suri this time surprised everyone with a brilliant execution.

A Complete Game Changer
30 May 2020
I never expected that there is a genre of Psychological Romantic Drama but this movie was truely a game changer. First of all hats off to Pratim D. Gupta for the whole concept of this movie. Secondly ofcourse his unique style of describing the narrative which is really really awesome may it be Ahare Mon, Saheb Bibi Ar Golam, Mach Mishti & More or this movie. Thirdly, the performances were exceptional playing four different characters in one single frame is matter of real headache but this duo Arjun and Madhumita did an appreciable job. The ensemble cast too was good but the show stealler was Paoli Dam in grey shade. I personally loved this new genre of Bangla Cinema and would highly highly recommend it, do give it a watch not for me but for this much much underrated director Pratim D. Gupta.

Emotional and Sweet Love Story
27 May 2020
This is the second anime film which I have watched. Absolutely speechless. I became a die hearted fan of this man after watching his second directorial venture. What attracted me the most was the storyline. A powerpact storyline with excessive emotional and sweet relationship between the two lead characters. I personally loved the film and would highly recommend this. Do give it a watch.

Divine Interpretation of a Psychological Thriller
26 May 2020
This is the second creation from Bangladesh which I have watched. The storyline itself is a gem but the execution is the thing which made it more unique. A very thought provoking and engaging Psychological Thriller with tit-bits of horror genre in it. The way the story unravels is something very unusual and constant relation with mythology and reflection of the deity in lead character is something which makes it more special. The Performances were of top notch category, Jaya Ahsaan and Chanchal Chowdhury both giving their best performances. Moreover, the ending of the film will turn you into splits. I personally loved the idea so would highly highly recommend this movie. Do give it a watch if you really love this genre of films.

Love Stories related to Mythological Elements
19 May 2020
Four love stories inclined with four elements of Lord Shiva namely Water, Air, Fire, Earth. The concept and stories of the film were simple but the thing which made the film special was the relation with these four mythological elements. The way Bijoy Nambear placed the elements in the respective love stories is highly appreciable and what makes it more unique is the names of the character are actually Avataars of Lord Shiva namely Shekhar, Trilok, Shiva and Rudra respectively. Moreover, Dulqueer Salman was at his best in the whole movie especially the gray shade he played in the 2nd story. I personally loved this film so would highly recommend it. Do give it a watch.

Realistic and Monotonous
19 May 2020
A movie which highlights several gruesome issues relating to underprivileged kids especially in the countries like Lebanon and Syria. From the negligence of the parents to indulgence in crime, the movie was way more monotonous than expected. First of all hats off to the writers for choosing this gruesome topic. Secondly the credits goes to the editing department for beautifully placing the scenes which made the movie way more emotional. Lastly the performances were really awesome especially the main character Zain. If you love offbeat and realistic films then do give it a watch. This was one of the nominated movies which competed with Parasite for the Oscars. And I personally think this film deserved one Oscar either for the Performance or for the Screenplay.

A top class Afrighting Political Crime Thriller.
16 May 2020
Absolutely speechless after seeing such a horrifying political Crime Thriller. The series which starts with the segregation of Heaven, Earth and Hell in the world itself between different classes of people. But with time everything mixes up. The series highlights how each and every official has the tendency to take their piece of pie in between conflicts. The series sheds light on the naked society and how the society sets up the crime, the criminal only commits it, is the main premise of the story. The performances were brilliant including Jaideep Ahlawaat, Neeraj Kabi, Swastika Mukherjee, M.R.Singh and many more but the showsteller was Abhishek Banerjee as Hathoda Tyagi. The storyline, execution was of top notch. If you wanna watch a top class political crime thriller then this is the one. Go for it.
