Higher Power (2018)
Sensational
For a low budget affair this sci-fi had effects I was not expecting. So very well done. The story line itself was fresh and original and had so much in the way of sub text. As his directorial debut Matthew Charles Santory should be very pleased with himself. The acting was adaptable to the film itself though could have had a little more heart. That being said it was believable enough acting. It was a slow start but packed a punch and kept you there and not checking your phone every few seconds as a distraction. Another movie I will watch more than once. 8/10
Midnighters (2017)
A thriller with a Horror after taste.
This movie was impressively made and had an unnerving sense of reality to it. Also had a Hitchcock-esque feel to it. Which in my book is a positive note. The actors well and truly outdid themselves and portrayed their characters to a magnificent degree. And being a screenwriting debut from Ramsay this was a solid head note in their careers. All in all it was enjoyable and had me leaving my claw marks of suspense in the leather couch arms. 7/10
Romans (2017)
I give it a 7
This movie is an emotional one that's for sure. It's unfortunate how many people truly feel like this in the world. It touches on a subject that is disturbingly common and yet needs to be told. And it tells it well. the acting is magnificent and the cinematography is vividly presented. Just make sure you have some tissues on stand by is my advice.
The Crucifixion (2017)
The same but different
Yes another movie with possessions and exorcisms. I for one am glad for it. There are so many different ways to delve into this world and genre. There are nuances in each of these style films that sets them apart from the others. The tying to the cross. The Strigoli festival masks and a gypsy boy. The scenery and architecture in Bucharest alone is amazing. Seeing the differences of culture in these films adds to the story to a degree in which you don't receive in a lot of other genres. The effects and story were well done in this movie and I would watch it again. This is not a one night stand for me. If you enjoy these style films it truly is worth watching at least once. At least!
Ride (2018)
Give it a go.
The premise of this movie intrigued me. The world being what it is today with ride share apps abundant, financial struggles and a tech heavy society, it surprises me that this isn't actually a common occurrence. It calls to the deviousness of human nature. The deep thrill some may feel with total control of others. The worlds bullies and those bullied by them. It has a fast paced feel to it keeping you interested till the climactic finale. Maybe not a see at the cinema style movie but one that is worth watching on your weekend. All in all, it was an enjoyable fair.
Bayou Caviar (2018)
A strong Debut.
Being that this is Cubas' directorial debut, I can set my expectations to suit. Unlike some reviews that just trash talk as if the people writing them could do better, I would like to just look at the positives. The actors played their roles to their always splendid ability. The well cut editing and imaginative cinematography, lush locations and complex yet not confusing story that had branches of side story. Cuba Gooding Jr's acting carrer has returned to life in this film. He has now cut his teeth and I look forward to see what the future brings with him at the helm. 7/10
Solis (2018)
It's hard being alone!
I enjoy a sci-fi just like the next nerd in line to swoon over Joss Whedon at supernova. I am a fence sitter fan of single actor movies. For example The Shallows left me bored, but Cast Away had me laughing, crying and all out hoping Wilson would get back to the island to keep the next poor soul company. In 'Solis' it gnawed on a ridiculous fear that nonetheless is a horrifying thought. Stranded, in space, hurtling for the sun. It sounds plain silly, but Steven Ogg being the only living actor we see did an incredible job at the solo screen. And here's a well earned applause for the dead co-pilot Sid Phoenix. That would have been a painful amount of being still. Honestly, try it. It's hard!! A real person did that. Not a dummy. Kudos. And being the first full length movie by Carl Strathie I think he did a great first attempt. It's worth watching at least once. And it deserves more than the 1/10 all those judgey McJudges are giving it.
Jackals (2017)
The hunt is on
Honestly I for one love cult / horror movies. Plots are usually similar but the execution and ending is key. Jackals ticked all the boxes for myself and my friends. We had a movie night and this was my contribution to the roll call. No one was disappointed. Our needs were met. The acting was great and the cinematography was well done. there were no black holes in the plot and it didn't leave you saying "was that it?". Not a cinema release, true. But on a dark night with the lights off this is one to enjoy. And to make it better...... Stephen Dorff. Enough said.
Ji zhi zhui ji (2017)
Well worth a watch.
The Shanghai Job didn't drag out and start slow. Within the first 5 minute there was an edge of your seat scene that hooks you into the story line. Yes there are subtitles but it doesn't detract from the film in the least. Anyone who enjoys a good action movie is willing to read a few lines of script. There are also a few good laughs throughout as well. Orlando did a great job and his stunt skills have only improved over the years. It's well worth a watch.
