All the Light We Cannot See (2023)
Disappointing
I loved this book so much and was excited to enjoy the Netflix version but I can't understand the casting. This movie is about the German occupation of France during WWII, but it is completely cast with British and American actors, aside from the young German actor who plays Werner. Werner is by far the most compelling character. I am a huge fan of Mark Ruffalo and Hugh Laurie but come on... Are there really no French actors out there who could have played these roles? And the young actress playing Maria (another American) could have used tons more direction on how to look blind. Shot after shot of her looking directly at the actor she was sharing the scene with. She looked like she could see which completely screwed up the vulnerability of her character. The shifting French accents also did not help the believability of the characters. I gave it five stars because I still enjoyed the story enough to watch all four episodes, but this is a beautiful book and Netflix did not do it justice.
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 (2023)
Great Ending for the Guardians
No spoilers here. I want everyone to enjoy this movie as much as I did. As a huge fan of the Guardians of the Galaxy, I was worried how the franchise was going to end. After all, it would be nearly impossible to write an ending that would please fans who have loved Peter, Rocket, Groot and company as much as Marvel fandom does. The Guardians are everyone's beloved misfits. The goofy little brother who is all the more endearing for his imperfections and good intentions. How could Kevin Feige possibly write an ending worthy of these wonderful characters? And yet he did. It was exciting, funny, heartbreaking and.... it felt like a natural progression of the characters' paths. Not forced, no shortcuts, I didn't walk out of the theater scratching my head trying to make sense of how we got from A to C without passing B. I really loved to this movie. I can't wait to see it again. It's been a long time since I've wanted to see a movie multiple times. Well done Marvel and thank you.
The Diplomat (2023)
Smart
This show is fast-paced, smart, well acted, and extremely engrossing. It's one you have to watch, no playing on the phone with casual glances or you'll have no idea what's happening. The storyline is full of intrigue and the characters are well fleshed out. I really enjoyed the complicated relationship between the ambassador and her husband. It was unique and one of the more interesting marital relationships I've seen on either the big or small screen. The entire cast of characters is great, each one interesting. Season 1 ended on a major cliffhanger with a turn of events I did not see coming. Please please Netflix, renew for a season 2!
Mythic Quest: Raven's Banquet (2020)
This is a Gem
I gave this show 10 out of 10 stars because it makes me laugh so hard., but there is a real depth to it that was surprising. I'm currently in the process of re-watching seasons 1 and 2 in anticipation for season 3 dropping. The pandemic episode brought me to tears, again.
I love the characters in the same way that I loved The Office characters ...they feel like people I know. The show is ironic and hilarious. It's fresh and not like anything else on tv. I am not a gamer but I was still fascinated by the gaming storyline that runs through the series.
I wish more people were watching this show and talking about it. I am really surprised by the fact that most people have never heard of it. I thought maybe it was because it was on Apple TV which is still a relatively new streaming service but Ted Lasso caught fire and I'm actually surprised that this little show has not. It's very, very good much better the most of the comedies out there. I like Abbott Elementary, it is a cute, watchable show. But Mythic Quest is light years better in every respect and it got completely snubbed at this year's Emmys while A. E. was nominated in several categories. I was so disappointed. Please watch this show, you won't regret it.
Welcome to Wrexham (2022)
If you haven't watched the show you should.
I know there are many Ted Lasso fans out there and this show is for you. I absolutely love this show. It has humor, warmth, and real characters that you feel like you get to know as the season rolls on. I genuinely think the best bits of the show are the interviews with the fans and the addition of the quirky parts like the elementary school class rapping before a big game.
The addition of Rob and Ryan as the team owners making intermittent appearances just adds to the loveliness of the show. Their friendship is so fun to watch and their interactions with the team and townspeople are wonderful.
This is a genuine underdog story that everyone loves. I am officially a Wrexham Dragons fan, I'm rooting for them all the way. I'm seriously considering ordering some merch 🤣😂
Thor: Love and Thunder (2022)
Great movie!!!
I loved everything about this movie. It was funny, sweet and full of great action. I loved how the Guardians were incorporated, how Jane was woven into the story, Gor the Butcher, the god lore, all of the flashback screens, the cameo appearances.... just loved it all!!! Two solid hours of pure enjoyment. I love movies that sweep me away and leave me smiling. This one ticks both boxes.
Bosch: Legacy (2022)
Need the next season ASAP!
I was thrilled to see the Harry Bosch story continued through this new series. We binged it over the course of 3 days and were not disappointed. Everything is on point, so good to see many of the characters from the original Bosch series back. Great book adaptation, great acting. This is a series that both my husband and I really enjoy watching together! Wow! Cannot wait for the next season!!
God's Favorite Idiot (2022)
Really enjoyed this show
I found this show to be funny and sweet. The characters are quirky and funny. It's not deep or profound but with the news of the world increasingly dark day by day.... I need more shows like this.
The Bear (2022)
Dramedy not comedy
I am really enjoying this show. I've made it through six episodes and the character development is great. I am already rooting for so many of the characters. It's turning into a real feel-good show. The casting and acting are great. I love the writing and the setting/cinematography are as realistic as it can get. With so many choices out there I find it oddly difficult to find shows that I truly enjoy. But this is one of them.
Outer Range (2022)
Sublime
This is the first Amazon Prime TV show that I've actually binge watched. It is a mashup of Yellowstone and X-Files. It seems like a very improbable pairing but they have pulled it off. I thought it was fascinating, and the characters & stellar acting were fantastic. I sincerely hope a season 2 is coming because I want to see what happens to the Abbott family. Really a good, strong show.
Pieces of Her (2022)
Terrible
OMG, this show is sooo bad. There are huge plot holes, incomprehensible decision making and awful characters. My daughter and I watched it together and ended up laughing so hard at some of the ridiculous "twists". Ugh, what a waste of time.
Dune (2021)
Great adaptation of a classic novel
I read this book ages ago and loved it. I wasn't thrilled with the original movie released in 1984 primarily because the casting and setting didn't jive with what I pictured in my head. This movie nailed it. The casting is so good and the cinematography is beautiful. The movie visually captures the book perfectly. I also want to add that you don't have to be a fan of the book to enjoy this movie, both my husband and son really liked it and neither have read the book .
Episodes (2011)
Smart and funny
Holy crap I don't know how I've missed this show for the past 3 years. I completely stumbled onto it last week trying to find something to watch on Netflix. I am so glad I did because it iis so smart and funny! The entire cast is brilliant and Matt LeBlanc is priceless!! The way that he is able to poke fun at himself and Hollywood is just too good. Absolutely love it
High Fidelity (2020)
Great little show
Great cast, solid acting enjoyable storyline. This one is easy to watch and entertaining. The characters are extremely likable, the music is incredible and you find yourself rooting for the three record store employees early on. Seriously hope we get another season
The Witcher (2019)
Solid fantasy series
I've read some terrible reviews about the series and I'm really confused. I've seen some really terrible Netflix shows and this just is not one of them. The production value is high the story is extremely entertaining. The casting is nothing short of brilliant. I was hooked within the first 5 minutes and binged all 8 series over a two-day. This is a very good solid fantasy TV show. I have not read The Witcher books or played the video game so perhaps there are some purests out there that are disappointed with the TV version. But as a novice to the story I thought it was a very good and I cannot wait for the second season. I loved the rich, epic stories.... A fairy tale for grown-ups with monsters, both human and real, heros, fantastical settings and magic. I found it extremely satisfying.
After Life (2019)
Absolutely beautiful
The only bad thing about After Life is that it ended. I could have spent hours and hours with these quirky, beautiful people. Ricky Gervais is the master of making me laugh and cry within a 30 seconds span. I loved every second and this short little series.
