Wandafuru raifu (1998)
Booooooring
I like thought proving movies, but I just didn't get it. The philosophical concept was interesting, and it is that that led me to enjoy the first 5 minutes of the movie. But, after the initial concept was revealed 5 minutes into the movie, I found the rest of the move to be completely boring. It amazes me that so many people rated this movie highly. I truly don't see the entertainment value in the movie that the others reviewers have seen in it (it is currently rated a 7.7, and that blows me away). Being engaged in an interactive philosophical conversation on what occurs in one's afterlife is entertaining, as is watching a GOOD movie on afterlife such as "the sixth sense". But thhis movie, Afterlife, is just plain slow and boring.
Closer (2004)
Don't rent the DVD --- and if you do, turn it off after the first 20 minutes
The only redeeming quality this movie had was its actors.
Unfortunately, the actors couldn't make up for the film's many flaws: entirely too slow, too disjointed, too strange, and pointless.
I found the first 15-30 minutes or so entertaining, but after that the film was a waste. Sometime around the 20 or 30 minute mark I kept thinking to myself "I should turn off this DVD and walk away", but I made the mistaking of then saying to myself "No, it has to get better soon"--- Too bad I said that; because the rest of the movie was a waste of time. My recommendation to you: If this is a movie that starts to bore you after the first 20-30 minutes, don't expect any change in pace........just shut the movie off and go do something more enjoyable with your evening. :)
Hudson Hawk (1991)
Great movie if you are willing to think unconventially
What I loved about this movie was how it took twists and turns different from anything I ever would have expected. I had actually seen this movie in the theater, and expected to see a typical Bruce Willis action film. When the movie started, I actually wondered if I had entered the right theater. Well, even though it started off strange, it just seemed to get stranger throughout the movie. Many twists and turns, that you just have to go with.......the movie doesn't follow any sort of normal convention. However, if you can just let loose, I think this movie is great, much in part to the fact that it is so different from normal mainstream movies, but still provides the basic comedy and action that I enjoy. I rate it an 8.
Igby Goes Down (2002)
Solidly enjoyable movie if you enjoy non-mainstream movies
Solidly enjoyable movie if you enjoy non-mainstream movies. The last 25%-30% of the movie seemed a little longer than I would have liked, but maybe that is because I was starting to get a bit tired.....this is a movie that one should be awake when they see; not because there is a difficult plot to follow, but because there is no extreme action or humor to grab your attention and wake you up. Despite this, I found the storyline to be unique, the acting to be very good, and the continuous underlying dark humor that was there to make the movie worthwhile seeing.
Mulholland Dr. (2001)
Never seemed to go anywhere; the end made no sense whatsoever
I loved Blue Velvet. I loved the Twin Peaks series. I enjoyed Wild at Heart
But, I got absolutely zero enjoyment out of Mulholland Dr. I don't know what the heck the critics were talking about when they said it was his best film ever. To me, the film just sort of moved along, but never moved in any particular direction. The ending made no sense to me either. I asked a ton of my friends who saw the movie what they thought, and they all agreed. Don't waste your time on this movie....you will have nothing to show for it.
Novocaine (2001)
A movie with many twists....in the vein of The Spanish Prisoner
If you are expecting a typical Steve Martin comedy, then don't see this movie. However, if you are looking for a dark comedy with many twists and turns, and with great acting, then this movie is for you. I liken it to The Spanish Prisoner, another fantastic Steve Martin movie that contained many unexpected plot twists. I give this a 10.
Men in Black II (2002)
First 30 minutes is very very cheesy, but it does pick up later
The first 30 minutes or so of the movie does not contain Tommy Lee, and it suffers for it. Up until such time as Tommy Lee is able to get back onto the screen, and back on duty, the entire plot line, acting abilities, and the lines that the writers came up with seemed bad enough to warrant walking out of the movie. However, if you can make it past the first 30 minutes, the rest of the movie was very good.
