Flight of the Butterflies (2012)
A fascinating IMAX film
I saw Flight of the Butterflies at the IMAX theater of the American Museum of Natural History. This was one of the most interesting short films I ever saw in an IMAX theater. Usually the films take advantage of the format, even abuse it, without much story. This film has an excellent story line. The IMAX format allows the viewer to immerse into the presented world, but you never feel they made this for the sake of showing off the IMAX. I learned about the butterflies in these 45 minutes more, than in my entire life. I came to admire and appreciate them. Without giving too much away and any spoilers, I can tell you it follows an individual specimen through a complete cycle for a year. You will be amazed. I would recommend it to anyone age 3 to adult.
Le dîner de cons (1998)
Humor without borders
I saw this film last night and I was laughing so hard I could not breathe and could not see from my tears. I chose to watch this French original over the US remake Dinner for Schmucks. The humor comes from situations the misunderstandings. The story is refreshingly simple, the script is perfect, and the acting is superb. This film also shows how one can create excellent entertainment with low budget (a fantastic value). The film is in French and I watched the DVD with its excellent English subtitles. The story could happen almost anywhere in the World, which makes this movie universal, not just uniquely French. I highly recommend it to anyone 14-and-up seeking a true comedy.
Some Folks Call It a Sling Blade (1994)
feels like a documentary
I did not see Sling Blade and knew nothing about this film. In the interview (or rather monolog) part Karl Childers is so real that it feels like a documentary. It is disturbing. The reporter is not shown at the same cut as Karl Childers, and I thought the filmmakers used a documentary. Billy Bob Thornton played his part perfectly.
Schwarzfahrer (1993)
A short about today's Germany with surprises
This movie has everything I expect in a short. Swiftness, beautiful cinematography, good subject matter, great characters, totally surprise and feel-good ending. One of the surprises is that I only found out what the subject was half way into the film. It's well worth seeing.
