The Walking Dead (2010)
Actually a 9 ... Until Season 4
The first season of the walking dead is actually one of my favorite serie, yes you read that right. For one, I love the zombie genre and this season respectée every single element of that , the characters are excellent, their writing offers great potential for growth. The plot of the first season is incredible and has the right pacing.
But right after that, the serie started to decline, which leads me to wonder ? Was the most suites format for a story like that 6 episodes per season, in my opinion that would have improve the show. Pacing have been one the main issue in the following seasons. The writers seemed to have issues finding the right rythm for the plot to unfold. Many episodes felt like fillers for the mid season episode or for the grand finale.
Sometimes shorter IS better.
Juju Stories (2021)
A unique window on African culture
I watched Juju Stories with my boyfriend, it was a total discovery.
This film tackles the themes of sorcery in a brand new light, this is not a horror film, but if deals with topics that could subscribe to it.
It was very refreshing to see a film attached to a different culture.
American films get old.
The photography was great, the characters were well written (the witch in particular gave goosebumps).
Some of the dialogues felt unnatural but the story in itself was more than enough.
This film shines by its originality.
I am definitely looking forward to watch something else from this collective.
Happily (2021)
Not a comedy, not a drama, not science fiction
I don't really understand what was the point of this story, the characters were bland, unsympathetic, horrible actually, this does not give the desire to jeep watching, because you end up not caring about them at all. Finishing the film was a hassle.
I am going on a sort of rant but look.
The all "anti-hero" thing is getting old. Especially when every character is one. Who do you expect the viewer to identify or empathise with?
Also, if this is about provoking or shocking the audience, remember there are at least hundreds of films / series / books / podcasts doing the exact same thing.
It would honestly be refreshing to have less anti- heroes on the screen, we have enough of those in real life.
La vita è bella (1997)
Real cinema
I was recommended this beautiful film. And I am so greatful that I was able to watch it.
In my opinion, this film is what cinema should be about.
It is a story happening around the time of the second World War in Italy.
The characters are well rounded and beautifully acted. The story is poetic, original and terribly funny but also heartbreaking and deep in meaning. I have not seen many films like this one. The protagonist is a real hero, courageous and earnest, it made me really feel for him and made me so engaged in the story.
This film made me dream, and nowadays, I have a hard time finding films like these.
Don't Worry Darling (2022)
Lacking in substance and frustrating
Clearly there was an idea the director wanted to convey with this film.
I coule identify the themes of women empowerment, the of questioning gender roles and the rise of masculinism.
But in the execution of these ideas something was lacking. It just dis not make sense in the end.
There were some blind spots (for exemple, how come no one in real life asked for Alice? No friends ? No family? I would have also loved to see more information about the science behind the simulation). Or, more about the others people, what about the others women there against their will? And about the men ? What pushed them to do this?
Frank, one of the Key character in my opinion, was also underdeveloped, why did he do what he did ?
And also WHO is his wife really? There was so much left to explain there.
All over, I feel like the story failed to explore these topics thoroughly.
Atlanta (2016)
Took me a while, but boy, oh boy! Am I not disappointed!
Think Empire if it was made by Adult Swim (and also if it was good)
The show centers around Earn, a Princeton dropout and his cousin, Alfred aka "Paperboi" an up and coming rapper, as well as their family, friends, girlfriends and acquaintances. This show tackles issues you might find in other shows in a brand new (weird) light, which is particularly refreshing when we're dealing with the African-american microcosm. Atlanta does not shy away from difficult themes, it dives and dissect every themes it gets its hand on!
Mustwatch!
Sound of Metal (2019)
A gem
A lot of filmmaker try to be deep about disability, few actually can. This film really goes deep into the theme,as well as the fact of growing apart from a loved one, when you life changes; it does so without fireworks, huge fights or tears. Every steps of the characters acceptance are shown with perfect pacing and smooth transitions. The characters are beautifully humans and realistic.
Truly a beautiful story filled with love, grief and transformation.
Lupin (2021)
Please make it stop
This is by far one of the most ridiculous french serie I have seen and I have seen a lot of them.
The plot is clear, the character are under developed and only serve the plot when needed. The acting is really not that good. This is suppose to be about a very clever "gentleman thief", except there is nothing clever about his heists absolutely nothing original, the only cause of the serie's success seems to be the apparent "wokeness" of it.
Please make it stop.
Green Room (2015)
A gem
I discovered this film on a calm weekend, and it became one of my favorite comfort film. It has a great cast, the characters are unique and relatable, the story is horrifying and gory in the best way possible, there is a great pacing and story-telling. If you're into that kind of thing, there is no doubt you'll like this film!
Charlie's Angels (2019)
I wish it wasn't that bad
This is not a film, this is an ad. If you watched it , you probably feel like you wasted your time, if you haven't watched it and wondering if you should, trust me, you're not missing anything.
Nocturama (2016)
Chef d'oeuvre
The film is perplex, poetic and meaningful. It is the tale of symptoms of modernity. A group of young people try to find meaning, depth and strong bonds in an individualistic, decadent and desolated world. They rebel, but we never know why.
We are only made to guess against who, when and how.
A masterpiece.
Marriage Story (2019)
Self-centered and boring
I usually like Baumbach's work, especially Frances Ha. But this film is a disappointment. None of the characters were relatable, likable or interesting, the story goes on forever. We are only made to see how selfish and self-centered those NY "artists" are (I hope it is not true).
It honesty feels like the director wanted the whole world to commemorate his failures with him while making sure the character representing him is called "a genius" by everyone.
Adam's driver full potential was not used. I hope this film at least evoke something for people who have experienced divorce.
