Selena: The Series (2020–2021)
6/10
I was (understandably) Concerned
17 July 2023
I put off seeing this series for a long time. I knew where my bread was buttered when it comes to the definitive story and depiction of Selena Quintanilla-Pérez. I saw the Movie Salena a couple of years out of high school and that high-school had a very Mexican-American student body. Many of my friends and classmates were inconsolable when the tragedy of Selana happened. So I am protective.

Having said that...I burned right through the series and couldn't stop until it was all done. Are there problems? Yes. Does it cross a Salena-exploitation line? I wouldn't say so but it dips its toe every once in a while.

What I loved about the series was the different perspectiv0e. I know the movie inside and out and I didn't feel like they were re-treading any ground. In fact, I thought they kept the movie in mind the whole time, making sure not to tell the same story, interpret things the same way, or make any cheap grabs in the name of promotion or sensationalism.

I think the acting is just fine. If you're comparing it to the movie, remember, the acting in the movie is pretty ham-fisted in a lot of parts and serviceable at best. It's the production and direction from the movie I think people remember the best, and why that movie is generally well-liked. But it wasn't for the acting, trust me. I didn't watch the movie over and over again for the actors. In fact, Jennifer Lopez's acting in the movie is one of the best and sets a very low bar. Lopez's depiction and sincerity of the Latin singer is the only reason I give her the time of day as I'm not partial to her or any of her other movies at all.

Christian Serratos' portrayal of the Tejano singer is on point and reserved. I don't know if the actor is leaning a little too heavily on Jennifer Lopez's interpretation or if that really is just what the singer was like and the portrayal is relatively straightforward.

The family members are solid. The only awkward characters are some of supporting characters from either extended family or close friends. They are off and weird. Again, they may be accurate but they are depicted in a strained and (at times) bazaar way.

All of the core Quintanilla family characters have equal time in this series, and I like that. Even when the subject of going solo is brought up it is done as a family event and consideration. This brings a richness that the movie lacked. Salena's inner turmoil about the growing weight and responsibility of the family's success is fully fleshed out and gives the character much more depth.

The performances don't hold a candle to the movie, which is fine, I know what this series is and I got out of it what I expected and wanted from it. I don't think this series is for everyone. Some series would be entertaining strictly from a production and direction standpoint. You would want to watch it regardless of the subject matter. Not this one. I think you need to be a fan of Salena,Tejano artists, specifically, or music in general to really care about it. Having said that there is one big caveat...Salena's family and the depiction of their journey navigating choppy and non-descript music waters is compelling. What they were trying to do is weird, confusing, and doesn't fit neatly into a paradigm, that itself is a good reason to watch the series. It's a 6, and that's ok.

I'm just glad everyone got paid
1 January 2023
This was...I mean...wow. I know this is Netflix Christmas excrement and that is what it is supposed to be but I have to echo a few other users with the sloppy editing and Ms. Lohan either not giving a damn or maybe she just hasn't gotten any better at acting over the years. I don't know why but I'm going to keep giving my girl a pass.

This is paint by numbers Christmas schlock and I'm not really sure what lessons were supposed to be learned here but jeez, Lindsey's character wasn't exactly a monster at the beginning of the movie, just a skill-less heiress, that doesn't make you a bad person, just dumb, you know, like the Kardashians.

I'm starting to get into watching Netflix Christmas nonsense just for sport, which is why I watched this. I didn't feel anything, I didn't care about anyone, I wasn't anticipating anything, just watched the clock and took a shot every time Lindsey made lazy acting choices (sigh).

6 for production design
17 December 2022
Went through the whole first season, here's what I got (no spoilers):

There is an obvious and deliberate through story. I would call this more of a mini series instead of just a series. Without spoilers, I did guess the main end reveal in the very first episode.

The production design is awesome and I believe it was only the first couple of episodes that Tim Burton directed and it showed. That is what I gave the 6/10 for. Had it not been for that I would have given the first season a 4. Here's the problem; the entire through-plot could have been any series, any characters, any time and place, and anywhere. The plot has nothing inherently specific to do with the Adams family I know from the television series and the movie in the 90s. It's so random. The entire plot could service a western, could have been an episode of magnum PI, could have been a movie about a cult, or could have been an episode of saved by the bell. That's my main problem with this series. It felt like someone submitted a story concept with outlines to Hollywood, then shelved it, then attached the Adams family to it at a letter date, changed some character specific plot devices and called it a day.

The series is nice to watch, is gorgeous, and has serviceable acting. The Wednesday characters seems like she is on the bleeding edge of straying from character type and just being a normal trope that progresses the plot as described above. I would like to see Jenna Ortega is a few more things before attributing her performance as unintentionally wooden. It's the same problem with Brent Spiner playing data in Star Trek TNG, is he good at playing a robot, or just a good actor in general?

The roommate is useless and does nothing in the entire series except for the last moment. But she still had nothing to do with the series. You could have taken her out and nothing the driving the plot would have been sacrificed. There is absolutely no reason for Christina Ricci to be in this series other than fan service, she does nothing, although she gave me a little (fleeting) chuckle in the last episode.

Is it entertaining? Absolutely. If you're here for Christina Ricci then skip it, if you're here for the Adams family, skip it, if you're here for rehashed tropes of Harry Potter, twilight, and stranger things, all a lot better and more original source material, then you're good.

Taken, without the sex trade stuff
27 September 2022
So I wasn't expecting much. But I was thoroughly entertained from beginning to end. I forget how good an actor Jackie Chan is...every time. This has some familiar notes from movies from my past to include Taken, Devil's Own, Patriot Games, Bourne Identity...etc. This didn't take away from my entertainment, mind you, but it was a little distracting at times. I believed everything, I was rooting for the Protagonist (which really should be the antagonist as this is indeed a vigilante film), and sympathized with his situation and motivations. I could easily watch this again and be just as entertained and I recommend anyone to do the same.

This is ridiculous
13 October 2021
The problem with this movie is that it doesn't know it's own tone. Is it Zombieland, or is it Super 8? Well, it's neither because those are good movies, but it tried to combine the tones of both, although it being an intentional effort is probably giving this more credit than it deserves. The only reason I watched this junk is because of the trailer. I thought it was going to be more Zombieland meets Independence Day but the pace stops several times to shove an earnest tone down your throat. I laughed three times but it was way too little too late. This movie is ridiculous.

He's All That (2021)
4/10
I mean...I laughed...I guess.
17 September 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Oh boy, there's a lot to unpack here. Let's lay our cards on the table, shall we? This movie was for me. I loved She's All That and know every line. We thought we were so cool and enlightened in our Williamson bubble of snappy and precocious teen dialogue. She's All That subverted expectations and convention with a no nonsense protagonist, sympathetic villains, a friggin awesome dance number, and our leading lady did NOT win the crown. Yes!

I'm not saying the original is good, I'm just saying it's why I watched this movie, obviously. I put off watching this movie for a while. Look at the user reviews, the ratings, and the people involved, this was going to be a trainwreck, and to be fair, I'm not calling it a 'Little' trainwrech, but it did go off the rails a few times. I relented for a few reasons, morbid curiosity, nostalgia for RLC, and Lillard. I'm also a fan of Buchanan and his really good work in Cobra Kai, admittedly, that's his only work I'm familiar with. But that was it, otherwise, I only tuned in to validate my suspicions.

This movie is bizarre, in the spirit of subverting expectations we went a little beyond gender swaps here in most places, in other places we stuck with it, we moved a couple of aspects around regarding the social economics structure, and have slightly fewer parents that exist in the teen comedy world. The bet is lame and doesn't pivot the action through the first plot point in an organic way, the antagonist is rotten and fails in comparison to an early career Paul friggin Walker!! (may he RIP). I'm sure most of the jarring oddities and forced dialogue was in context to my 1999 comparisons but I tried to watch this movie on it's face, which was just as hard even if it wasn't a a remake.

Mark Waters directed this movie, he also directed Mean Girls...What?! How do you get so dispirit results from someone who obviously has an ear for the teenage voice, is this just about the script? The editing is all over the place and I felt like connecting story elements were deleted. Characters were in different places without transition or context and I was confused about the character's motivations a lot while watching this. We know the script is trash but that doesn't explain the direction, editing, production design, world-building, and continuity issues. At one point Buchanan busted out his greatest karate hits as well...for some reason. Why?! I make a mean banana bread but that doesn't mean it should be put into a scene, especially an important plot point scene that drives the homecoming king portion of the bet (that doesn't have nearly enough weight in this movie as it should BTW).

But I laughed...I laughed at four places in this movie, I kept track. These were not internal chuckles or chortles as if to say, "huh, how amusing". I laughed out loud and couldn't help it. The jokes were all delivered by Buchanan. I know he is still relatively early in his career but I like him. I fear that he will fall into the same trap as Britt Robertson, falling for his own hype. He's not that good but he shines against his costars, which doesn't mean much with projects like this.

This movie had all the same trappings as The Duff but not as good of a central underlying theme, which is inexcusable for an almost shot for shot remake. I found myself wanting to watch The Duff instead of this which is never good for the movie in question.

If you watch this movie for Buchanan, I think he is doing just fine, if you're watching for an updated version of She's All That, just watch the original, even if you're not of that generation it will be what you're after if you're considering watching this trash. RLC's presence in He's All That is not worth it, Lillard cracks one funny joke, after that I felt like he had worn out his cameo welcome, the only constant underlying theme with respect to the entire cast of this movie...tragic.

Roseanne: White Men Can't Kiss (1994)
Season 7, Episode 9
9/10
Realistic approach to everyday issues
3 September 2020
There are so many ways this episode could have screwed this up. DJ could have "learned his lesson", Roseanne could have taken the virtuous road never taken and execute her social commentary with uncompromising speeches and platitudes, the teacher could have made Roseanne see the light through patience, tenderness, and a light backdrop of violins to really drive it home.

None of this happened, everyone in the A plot were bigots, didn't like that about themselves, recognized it, and addressed it, mostly poorly. What I appreciate it showing that black people in a predominantly white neighborhood are probably annoyed by explaining away their friend's attitudes and calling them out making things uncomfortable, because that's what happens. I like a teacher judging the hell out of a Mom because of things their kids do and assume it's the value the parents share. I love that the resolution in the episode may not be the best real world resolution but that's the decision the Conners are going with, hell even Roseanne's reasoning not to be a bigot is self serving, she doesn't want to be labelled as such in the eyes of the community.

The episode also does a good job of rounding out the history of the Conners without spelling it out. They have simply not been exposed to that much diversity and while they considered themselves liberal in the past the demons of prejudice come home to roost. This episode should be shown in schools and churches if you want to discuss the issue of prejudice, racism, and diversity. I forgot how much I liked this particular episode, even the face of the current political environment and the titular star's issues concerning race, which does not alter the episode's effective punch for me at all.

Don't let the 5 out of ten fool ya
13 August 2020
Warning: Spoilers
I'm a space head. I love space. I love the rockets, I love the space business, I love the ideas and the possibilities. I'm usually a sucker for a good near future sci-fi film. Don't care too much for space horror, don't know why that's a thing.

Here's were I'm going with this. I love this move. All of the set pieces, the story elements, the production design, and the script are aimed straight at my heart and I fell for it. Having said that, there is so much wrong with it from the script, to the set pieces, to the characterizations, the acting, story continuity, and how they handle teenagers in general, ugh! There is a huge problem that I can't get away from, and the only reason for the 5 out of 10 stars....real time communication between Mars and Earth. I get why they do it, I'm sure it was a totally conscious choice on the parts of the producers and director, it lends itself to the story that is hard to have without it. But it's completely distracting. I found I was trying to convince myself that they were presenting the real-time communication in an artistic manner staged to resemble real-time when in fact they were communicating with lag. But at one point a main characters on Earth interrupts a main character on Mars. Nope, that's where I just can't. The Martian, Gravity, Ad Astra, they all handle this well and incorporate the lag into the story. I just don't see why The Space Between Us couldn't do the same.

OK, enough of all that. Let's get to the stuff that matters. Asa Butterfield is in rare form. He moves past a stoic and enigmatic boy wonder in Ender's Game and transitions to solid front man. I would say he is the best actor in the film but Gary Oldman is in this picture and I'm not ready to go there yet. Britt Robertson is barely hanging onto her character. Which is unfortunate. She's had a charm I've enjoyed watching over the years. I'm still not ready to call her mediocre career a result of the projects she has chosen or if it is, in fact, just her. Carla Gugina isn't good but she's was one of my childhood crushes, soooo, I don't care.

The Space Between Us is a version of the future that NASA and Boeing fancy. I don't think it will look like that, just in terms of hardware. Right now it's a future that SpaceX and Elon Musk envisions, whether NASA likes it or not. The concept of the movie is good, it's tragic, compelling, draws us not only into the main characters but also the main problem that the movie proposes with children being born on Mars, they can't come home, and what is home to someone who has no parents. This movies explores those ideas well using conventional devices like foster children and unconventional plot mechanisms like Martian effects on human physiology.

The penultimate scene to the end is absurd but I cried anyway, the end is perfect and usually the type of ending I crave. Give me a hint of hope, with a dash of realistic snap back, then bring it home with cinematic pace. Don't let the 5 out of 10 fool you, just watch this movie.

Joker (I) (2019)

Joker didn't need The Joker to be good
17 November 2019
Warning: Spoilers
I'm noticing a trend here, Hollywood doesn't think that people will watch a movie unless a Marvel or DC villain is attached to it. Joker could have stood on its own as a socially awkward and psychologically deranged New Yorker navigates the daily streets and life of a city gone mad. Then have Juaquin Phoenix at the helm. How do you go wrong? It doesn't need to be an origin story. Having said that the movie is an excellent execution and holds an amazingly, and surprisingly, level of restraint and pacing. As an audience member you are embarrassed for the main character throughout and feel his awkward interactions with people as he is. This could have been a re-imagining of Taxi driver and it would have been better than the source material. One thing that shouldn't be overstated is that the makers and participants of this movie weren't going for louder, faster, and explosions to make its point. Nor did it succumb to fanboy nonsense and cheap multiverse references. You will sympathize with the character in a cradle of relativity that no one will want to admit to others. We've all done the things the titular character does, we've made faces in the mirror, we've wanted things and people above our station, and we've all imagined scenarios where we were smooth, confident, well liked, and said all the right things.

I'm envious for people who would go into this movie with no knowledge of who Batman is, what The Joker is, who the Waynes are, and what Gotham is. For them this movie would simply be a great movie about a clown with a lot of personal problems, I'd watch that.

It made me feel things
3 November 2019
Ok, I'm not going to waste too many words here. I cried three times, I rolled my eyes twice, I laughed once, and I didn't want the movie to end. Linda Hamilton was amazing and Arnie was a joke. That's it. It's worth the price of admission.

Child's Play (2019)

A big ole meh
24 June 2019
I'm giving this 5/10 out of respect for the child acting and production quality in general. But here's the problem, What made Chucky terrifying is that it was a possessed doll with human qualities, rage, and psychosis. Here's the deal, there is nothing skin crawling about AI gone bad, that's what the Terminators are for, and they were menacing, not skin crawling. In the original when Chucky went from cute doll to killer trying to tear your jugular out the face contorted and the voice became human and it scared the crap out of me from the time I was 14 to the time I was 42 and still haunts me to this day. This reboot will not haunt me. It is as scary as maximum overdrive. It is missing the personal psychotic touch which is what makes Chucky so terrifying.

So it is worth the price of admission but don't expect much past that, or a revisit to the past. If you never saw the original then it will scare you, if you did it won't.

I don't get it
13 April 2019
This movie is trash. I dont understand how this got a theatrical release. The comedy is off, the editing is stifled and choppy, disconnected, and doesn't have any flow from one element to the next. I literally thought that I had zoned out for five minutes because I was somewhere else in the movie and didn't know how I got there.

I love this genre. It is really hard for me not to like this genre. I love 17 again, 13 going on 30, big, like father like son, freaky Friday, you name it. This was garbage. How do you screw this up?! I left the theater in the middle of the movie. I've never done that! I was embarrassed to watch it. The weird thing was the people with me in the theater were laughing tits at it. I still don't get it.
