Barbie (2023)
Don't let anyone fool you. This is a kid's movie. Period.
I have no idea what is the reason that this movie somehow ended up being presented, even in the academy awards, as anything other than a movie for children. I'm flabbergasted that this was even in the same conversation that Oppenheimer or any other movie considered a movie for adults. This is not even at the level of monster Inc or Shrek that it can be watched by and adult. This is just a little above peppa pig and below Frozen.
Another surprising fact is that Ryan Gosling is nominated to best actor for a kid's movie? I don't think that ever happened before (not that Oscars are a serious thing, but you know..)
World is just going crazy.
Halt and Catch Fire (2014)
If you feel nostalgic about old tech from time to time, this is your show. If not, you should watch it anwyay
Halt and catch fire is a semi-fictional story of the development of eraly personal computers, pc games, and software. This is why is a must.
- First episode hook you up from the begining.
- Absolut original idea and subject.
- It doesnt go to any common places and is totally believable.
- Charachters are imperfect, greedy and bratt, buy you are gonna love every one of them
- It does absolute justice to those first tech enterpereurs and start ups when being smart was the most valuable capital
- Series finale is a real series finale, not a quick "wrap it up" because we runned out of money.
Station Eleven (2021)
As boring as it can be
I made it to the 5th episode, and I shouldn't have. By the 5th episode there's no conflict at all and there are still telling the story through flashbacks of irrelevant characters. This is clearly an idea (not original by the way) that got funding for an ok pilot and the creativity stopped there. After that is just a slow story that gets you nowhere and you just don't care anymore.
Dune (2021)
Not really sci fi, but adventure.
Be aware that this is comparable with stars wars or Lord of the rings. It's an adventure movie with amazing sound and stunning visuals.
Don't expect dramatic, intense, strong scenes or characters because this is not that kind of movie (like blade runner 2049 was).
I know I'm maybe stating the obvious, but I didn't know, and this kind of movies are not my cup of tea. But if you are into adventures, this is your movie.
Richard Jewell (2019)
Intersting story. That's it.
Interesting story, some good performances and thats about it. This movie lacks entirely of a climax, a good narrative or any memoral scenes or dialogue.
Replace the actors with unknown rookie actors, and you got yourself a tv movie done by the history channel.
Once Upon a Time in America (1984)
Not that great.
Once you understand that the main character, who somehow is the centered, reasonable and honored one is a freaking rapist, there's just no way that you could enjoy the rest of the movie.
I can see why the edited early versions of this movie was good praised, the rape scenes were left out so you can actually care for the character!
Wrath of Man (2021)
Expect what you should expect from an action movie about payback.
Nothing special here. An action movie about payback. As its main theme. Could have been directed by any other director, because Guy Ritchie doesnt add any special thing that we didnt see before in this kind of films.
BUT.. since there is really nothing to see in movie theateres, give it a shot.
Crime Scene: The Vanishing at the Cecil Hotel (2021)
A complete mess
Tedious rambling on of a quite interesting story, and bad bad BAD "dont f**ck with cats" wanna be. They tried to mix the story of the Hotel, the story of the manager, the story of downtown L. A., the story of video gone viral and a little bit of the actual night. Most of the documentary is narrated by unenployed, basement living, conspiracies theorist, youtubers who found a porupuse by doing youtube videos on this case (their words, not mine). Yeah, we all got obsessed with some mistery on the internet here and there. That doesnt mean that we are expert witness and worthy to be included in a murder case, especcially if we found NOTHING relevant.
On the other hand, is pretty damn efficientt to put you to sleep at night.
Jodorowsky's Dune (2013)
If you can read between the lines, you'll know this is the story of conman
Alejandro Jodorowsky is a well known charlatan and scammer, a self help guru and a creator of a form of therapy known as "psycho - magic" witch is of course a total fraud.
Having been said that (and you can check it for yourself if you dont believe me), my guess is that he conned a lot of people in the 70s for the making of this movie. All the encounters he described to convince the cast (Dalí, Orson Wells, Mick Jagger) are evidently pure fantasy and there's no a shred of evidence that any of those events happened (except for a few words of one of Dali's muse, who is kind of a fraudster herself). I wont be surprised if that is the way he tricked producers and the visual artist to come abroad this project, that in the end he knew very well that it never would be done, so he could walk away with all of the fame and none of the blame, because is just "Hollywood's fault, not mine".
This documentary is 100% without exception a testimony narrated by of some of the people involved in the process and that's it. No more evidence, investigation or third party testimony.
Terminator: Dark Fate (2019)
This is pretty much as good as a sequel as you gonna get, and that's good enough to go and watch it
If you are going to the movies expecting something as good as T1 or T2, you shouldn't go in the first place. Why? Because it is just IMPOSSIBLE to make a sequel to be at the level of those movies (personally I don't even think that T2 is at the level of T1). Those movies were original, ballsy, well scripted and kind of resolved everything in the story. We carry them deep in our hearts and is just foolish to think that they could be matched. BUT, if you are hard core fan of Terminator as I am, and think any day that you see Arnold as a T-800 and Linda Hamilton as Sarah Connor is a good day, you go and watch this movie.
Gisaengchung (2019)
Strange movie, but a good one.
This is a dark comedy, no question about it. But is also an almost surreal movie. Very clever thought. This is the kind of movie that a lot of people want to do and fail badly. So if you are into dark comedy, strange movie, give it a go.
Joker (2019)
Just save your time and watch a Scorsese movie
I mean, why bother with a bad copy? Just watch Taxi Driver and The king of comedy. Or better yet, take the DVD's, put them in an video editor, make random cuts of each and export a 2 hour movie with scenes of both. Watch it in bed when you are feeling sleepy so you get a little confused and I GUARANTEE you that you gonna get something pretty similar to the joker. Really.. not worth it.If you wanna watch an Scorsese type movie... just watch an Scorsese's movie.
Patriot (2015)
Best TV show of the last 5 years. Period. Case closed. Next, please
This is just genius writing, there is no other way to put it. This is the show that a lot of people tried to do in the past and failed. A mix between british ironic and dark humor, american way of filming wit american characters, and a script that is just to damn good and original, but without being snobby. A lot of shows failed miserably trying to achieve this. Patriot didnt. Is just flabbergasting good. Watch it.
Succession (2018)
The closest thing to the best tv series ever made: Boss.
Yup. If you watched Boss and jumped out of your seat in various episodes and cried like a baby when it got cancelled, this is closest thing you will ever get to it. A patriarch running things like a egocentric, paranoid, maniac and seeing angles that apparently only he can see, not only because of his intellect, but because his lack of ethics. Brian Cox is just damn good.
Hint: Get pass after the second episode, witch frankly is kind of boring. After that, it becomes fantastic
Cobra Kai (2018)
They TOTALLY nailed right in the head.
I mean, a tv show that is a revival of a cheesy movie from the eighties? That HAS to suck. Well, it doesn't. It doesn't AT ALL. This show was surprisingly well done, and it achieved everything that the movies achieved, especially the first one. This is why you should see it
- Acting is not bad
- The first movie is very much relevant in this story. The show uses music, characters, names, places and actual scenes from the first movies (not like sarah connor chronicles that never used the word "terminator" for copyright issues)
- The story is totally believable (in the karate kid world, of course) There's no over the top story to try to impress the audience
But, always remember, this is still is Karate kid, so you are not going to find a transcendental piece of art in this tv show, but damn! it is well made.
Wild Wild Country (2018)
Yes, watch it. But dont start it at night or you will need a lot of coffee at work the next day
I have to say, Netflix pretty much ruins everything that it put his hands on it when talking about fiction tv shows. Now, on documentaries, I take my hat off. This one really nailed it and this is why you should watch it:
- The story is so bizarre and unbelievable that is no other way to show it than with a documentary
- This must be one of the most unbiased documentaries ever. You are trying to figure out whos the bad guy through the entire series.
- The amount of real life footage gather here is just breathtaking, almost like "Capturing the Friedmans"
- You will find yourself saying "WHAT? NO WAY" every 15 minutes.
Blade Runner 2049 (2017)
Best sequel that I've seen in my life. (Yes, that includes The Godfather and BTTF)
This movie is just too damn good. It is the perfect sequel to the first one. Same visuals, same type of story telling, same aesthetics, amazing music, and a perfect follow up to the story. It is almost as it was filmed during the production of the first one (like BTTF 2).
If you are thinking that probably is just a lame script that kind of worked like a sequel and then, Harrison Ford was hired just to make a few bucks, and is just a shitty movie that they put the name "blade runner" as a bait, well I'm glad to tell you that you are ABSOLUTELY WRONG. Go see it, now.
Swiss Army Man (2016)
Just because the movie is not mainstream, it doesn't mean its instantly good or with deep meaning. Enough of that bullshit.
When someone is speaking about a movie and they start by telling you about the deep meaning, and the social analysis... don't see it. Actually I have to say this is not even pretentious, is just a movie with nothing to offer, except in the minds of those Pseudo-intellectual people who try very very hard to find deep meaning and goes to a huge meaningless analysis of this kind of surrealistic movies, because they think they are outside of the system. Don't get me wrong, I like surrealistic movies like synecdoche New York for example. But this is just bad. Im surprised that got a budget to make it.
Not dramatic enough, not funny enough, not surreal enough. Like I said, nothing to offer. Skip this one
Quarry (2016)
Man, this is good.
Do you start watching new shows expecting to have at least, a good narrative?
Do you find yourself guessing (and getting it right) the next line of a dialogue in a series, because the script is so predictable?
Do you just kind of get hooked up with mediocre TV series, because there is just nothing to see?
Well my friend, then is time for you to watch Quarry. Finally some fresh air with an original idea and god damned well scripted series. Fine acting, fine filming, fine narrative and and incredibly well done 70s aesthetics. A good suspense drama that it won't disappoint you.
Yes, see it.
MacGyver (2016)
Look the first 40 seconds, and you know how the whole TV show will go.
There's nothing that screws up more a movie or TV show about a team doing undercover missions (or similar), that when the team start chatting we each other and making bad jokes over the intercom.
Wanna make it worst? Add a woman in the team that have a fling with one of the guys, so the other guy look jealous.
Yup, you know what i'm a talking about. And that's exactly how Mac Gyver starts the first episode of the first season.
Bad script (REALLY bad), bad plot and bad mac gyver. It really looks like a recycled script from some other show that never made it.
Predictability at its finest
Jason Bourne (2016)
Good one.
I'm a huge fan of the Bourne trilogy (of course, not the legacy) and I have to say that this one gets the job done, specially if you consider this is the fourth movie, which you know you shouldn't expect much.
Sure, the plot is kind of dumb compared to the previous ones, and the motivations of Jason Bourne are a little confused, but the character still intact.
Plus: Still connected to the trilogy and not just a new story that includes Bourne Against: Locations in this one are not that good as we were used to.
Being Ultimatum my favorite, this one is at the level of Bourne Identity and far better than Legacy. Yes, go see it.
Criminal (2016)
Actually, not bad.
If you are looking to watch an entertainment action/suspense movie, you should give this one a shot, specially these days where the action flicks are so terrible.
Good cast with fine acting (at least for this type of movie) A little bit of sci-fi, a little bit of espionage, and of course a little bit out there, but you will pass it through.
Plus: Kevin Costner performance is actually pretty good in this one Against: The character and performance of the bad guy is just lame.
Again, don't expect this to be at the level of Die Hard or The Bourne trilogy, but it gets the job don
Demolition (2015)
Bleh. Another movie wanting to be original and not getting it
I remember when I watched "In Bruges" and a friend of mine told me, "that is a strange movie, but a good one", what a perfect description.
This one in the other hand is a "strange movie" but a pretty bad one. So the guy loses his wife and start act strange, so what? Nothing, nothing at all. This is the kind of cinema trying to make good characters and don't caring about the story or plot. Now you can make a great film with that premise, such as "About Schmidt" (wich by the way, is kind of the same story) or "Taxi Driver" or you can a make a mediocre and kind of pretentious film like this. You will stop caring about the characters before the ending of the movie, or a minute after it finished.
Not good for entertainment, not good for killing some time and not good for art. Skip this one.
