The Princess (2022)
An entertaining made-for-TV type movie
It seems like there's not much I can say, that hasn't been said in other reviews. If you're expecting John Wick, then you'll be disappointed. If you want a fun action movie with entertaining fight scenes, it's a great way to spend 1.5 hours. The production quality is on the lower side - there's obvious green screen, and enough extras to fill the castle without making it feel actually populated. But people have been enjoying movies of this quality for years, and there's no reason that this one won't entertain if you let it.
Hunter Killer (2018)
Solid, but not great political action movie
Just got out of a pre-release screening for this. Definitely enjoyed it. Some of the dialogue was a little cheesy, and it was ultimately predictable (spoilers: they prevent WW3) but it managed to keep me interested the entire time, and I was never bored.
I wouldn't say you need to rush to the theatres to see this, but it's a great choice if you want to see A movie, and aren't quite sure what to see.
The Island (2005)
Great summer movie, completely not what I expected!
I managed to see this tonight at a sneak preview. I had seen a trailer or two for it, and figured it would be a decent popcorn movie. After all, the cast looked wonderful, so it couldn't be bad, right?
Wow.
Completely NOT what I was expecting. I'm not sure what I was expecting, but it wasn't... that. Which made it all that much better.
The movie has a decent plot, not too complicated, but thought provoking enough that it gives you something to think about afterwards. Sure, it's not that original, but now-a-days, what is? And it never stops. We were there for 2 hours, but it felt like 3. But not in an "OMG, is this ever going to end" way, but in a "OMG, they managed to pack so much in there" way. The movie never stops, and by the time you're out of there, it really does feel a lot longer than it was. But I would have happily seen more.
They do a good job with the ending though. It was a little clichéd, but not surprisingly so. I wish they had followed up with the impact after the climax... but that could be a movie into itself.
All in all, if you're looking for a good summer blockbuster, this is definitely one of them. It's not quite as good as Batman Begins, but then again, I'm not sure anything this summer will be. However, this definitely makes a case for second place.
In the Red (1999)
A Good Plot Gone Bad...
In The Red (or Redlined, as the DVD is called) is a bad movie with a good heart. It tries to be The Fast and the Furious, but fails in almost every way.
The movie is about drugs, not about racing, despite it's claims to the contrary. There aren't any cars worth watching in the movie, nor any good racing scenes. All of the car chases seem to be going at a leisurely 30 MPH, giving no illusion excitement or suspense.
I picked it up at walmart out of their $5.88 bin, and for that price, I can't really complain. But having seen it, I wonder if I'll ever bother to watch it again.
Hulk (2003)
What a waste of time...
I didn't have high expectations for this movie. As a regular movie-go-er, I usually like most movies I watch. Granted, I see enough that more than a handful aren't decent, and I've had some arguments with friends about how good movies were (yes, I like b-movies, so sue me.) With this said, I approached the Hulk expecting a fun, interesting movie, not necessarily good, but at least entertaining, within the realm of the rest of the super-hero movies that have come out lately, with much success.
Boy was I wrong. This was the first movie in a long while that bored me, and the first movie I can remember that actually made me want my money back. I thought the CGI would be the worst thing about this movie, but it was the best, and it wasn't all that great. Oh, I'm wrong... Sam Elliot was good, it was nice to see him in a "block-buster" picture, and Jennifer Connelly put in a good performance, but the rest of the movie was crap. How they got once superb actor Nick Nolte to play such an awful part is beyond me. The editing was atrocious, among the worst I've ever seen. The editor couldn't figure out how he wanted to get from one scene to the next. Wipes, dissolves, cuts were all used, and for a while it was more entertaining to count the number of different methods used than to actually watch the movie. But only for so long, because after a while you can't remember if you were on #63 or #72. The soundtrack was bland, not even coming close to the excellence achieved in Daredevil.
Don't bother wasting your time with this movie. If you must see it, wait till it's out on video, and see if you can con a friend into renting it, so you don't have to waste your money on it.
Red Dragon (2002)
Very dissapointed....
I went and saw this movie, hoping to see something similar to Silence in style and plot. I got one of the two, and it wasn't the one I wanted. The plot is good, and from what I can recall of the book, kept close enough to the book to satisfy most readers. A lot of the psychological aspects of the book were lost, but that was mostly due to the problems of transporting a book to film and not being able to keep a running narrative of the characters thoughts.
I was sorely dissapointed at the screen writing however. I laughed almost the entire way through the movie, and wasn't ever really scared. I thought it dragged at some points in the middle, when dealing with the romantic sub-plot. I know Fiennes' character was supposed to be shy, but it was almost painful to watch him. This was more of a fault of the writing than Fiennes' acting, however.
My other gripe was the writing for Hannibal. He didn't come off sounding like the misguided genius that he was in Silence or Hannibal. Some of his lines were down right childish, and made me wonder how Norton's character could take him seriously.
I was very much looking forward to this movie since i heard of it's conception, and was very dissapointed in the result. I hope that the series stops here before any more damage is done to the wonderful character of Hannibal Lecter.
Hannibal (2001)
Wasn't Silent, that's for sure...
This movie was definitely a movie worth seeing, especially if you're a fan of it's predecessor, Silence of the Lambs. However, although I did enjoy it, I had a fairly large problem with it. It doesn't go anywhere. The movie, while having content, manages to end up at the same place as it is in the beginning. I was expecting another movie along the lines of Silence, and was disappointed on that count. Ridley Scott does a wonderful job directing this, and I was thoroughly impressed with the cinematography. Some of the camera work is quite impressive, and Anthony Hopkins puts on another breath-taking performance as Hannibal Lecter. Julianne Moore does a good job as Sterling, although there are parts of the movie where they use dialogue from Silence, and it is readily recognizable there that her voice is definitely not Jodie Foster's. But other than that, she fills the role in very nicely. All in all this was a very good movie, although again, it is much more about character development than it is any sort of plot. So if you're planning on going to see it, expecting to see another Silence, make sure you adjust your expectations if you want to get the most out of this film.
