Crooked House (2008)
Mark Gatiss has done it again!
What a wonderful, creepy and intriguing tale Mark Gatiss has presented for us here with the marvellous Crooked House.
Set over three consecutive episodes, this story tells the tale of Lee Ingleby who plays a man who has unearthed an unearthly door knocker from his garden and goes to see the Cuator (Mark Gatiss) of an old museum who sheds light on its gruesome past of the now demolished Geap Manor.
The supporting cast in this production is superb with Jean Marsh, Phillip Jackson, Andy Nyman and even a fleeting cameo from the magician Derren Brown as a shadowy character.
I shall not give anything away as the plot is so intriguing it would spoil the ending. I'd recommend this drama for anyone who loves a good scare. I hope to see a few more episodes from Mark Gatiss as this format fits in perfectly for a full series of spooks and scares which would echo that of 'Tales of the Unexpected'.
Ten out of ten!
Doctor Who: Timelash: Part One (1985)
Timelash
This episode is cited for being one of the series worst stories, and so far from part one, I can see why. The opening scenes of Peri and the Doctor in the TARDIS is painful to watch with their arguing and dull dialogue. The Two Doctors had ended on such a high with the TARDIS crew being much warmer, and as the series progressed, it should have built up on that, not going back to square 0.
In this episode the planet Karfel is plagued by the dictatorship of the Borad, who throws people into the terrible Timelash. The characters we meet are quite boring, with no stand-out characteristics. The robot servants of the Borad are quite rubbish with the high pitched talking which sounds like it fell out of the 80's. In this case it was.
One of the best bits of this episode is David Chandler as 'Herbert' Wells.
I hope the episode gets better....
The Poseidon Adventure (1972)
"Hell Upside Down!"
The Poseidon Adventure is the first of a long string of disaster movies. Its about the cruise ship POSEIDON that is capsized on the early hours of New Years Day. The ship contains such stars as Gene Hackman, Ernest Borgnine, Red Buttons, Carol Lynley, Roddy McDowall, and Shelly Winters. They have to escape the grand dining room, flooding corridors, upside down kitchens, vertical shafts, and a lot more obstacle's to brave. The acting of the actors are good, especially Shelly Winters as the former swimming champion. Director Ronald Neame creates characters you care about and cranks up the tension with the claustrophobia and the thought of impending doom. The model of the Poseidon is impressive. The supporting cast contains Jack Albertson, Stella Stevens, Pamela Sue Martin, Arthur Connell, Eric Shea. Leslie Neilsen plays the Captain in a straight face role, and Fred Sadoff plays Mr Linarcos, the ships accountant, but they go out early in the movie. The Poseidon Adventure is an enjoyable film, with a stellar cast. 10 out of 10!
