Das Wunder von Bern (2003)
A real film document of a great event in the 50's!
For the very first time I went to the cinema the day after to watch a movie a second time. And I am a swiss citizen living in Germany, so it cannot be patriotic feelings. This film is just a wonderful film document of the great victory of the German soccer team against the Hungarian on in 1954. My father was 20 years old at that time and he watched this historical match live on TV in Bale (Basel). He told me many times that the German team surprised everybody because nobody was in a doubt at the beginning of the world championship that the Hungarian team will win. So this 3:2 victory of the German soccer time was really a historical event and cannot be really compared with 1974 or 1990 where they became world champion as well. I deeply recommend my father to go to the cinema as soon as possible to watch this movie. According to the scenery shown in the film Matthias and Richard must have crossed the Alpes when driving from Essen to Bern. But in fact this is not necessary because Bern is located at the north side of this mountain chain. Nevertheless a wonderful film!
The Mexican (2001)
Very disappointing
I watched this film yesterday evening. I was really very disappointed. It is just a waste of time and the fact, that Julia Roberts and Brad Pitt are playing together does not make a good film. During nearly a full hour I was near to fall asleep. It has a few funny moments, but it is far away from a comedy. I am really wondering what happened to Julia Roberts and Brad Pitt to make them playing in a film having a script like this one.
River of No Return (1954)
You must not kill!?
Maybe you wonder, why I used above one line summary. I think this is the great message of this movie, the questioning of the fifth commandment. Just remember the end! Harry Weston is watching out for Matt Calder with the clear intention to kill him. While Harry is aiming at Matt, Matt's son Mark shoots him in the back to save his father. So he decided against the fifth commandment and killed a man. Wasn't he right to do so? In my opinion he was, but what do you think? Besides this, the scenery is just marvelous, the acting is average. And of course it was very nice to see Marilyn Monroe in wet jeans!! I gave this file a 7 out of 10.
Schindler's List (1993)
One of the best movies ever made!
Watching this movie is just three hours of full excitement. I personally have seen it several times and I am sure I will enjoy it again. Especially Ralph Fiennes did an excellent job playing the role of Amon Göth. It certainly was not easy to play this psychopath. I also like the fact that this movie crosses out, that they were also "good" Germans during the Nazi time. All what Oskar Schindler did at the very beginning was for his very own benefit. So it is quite amazing how he turned to be such a caring and helpful person. And the part of Itzhak Stern is also just great! First he played along with Schindler's plan because this brought him to the position to help his fellow people. He did not like Schindler at all, he even refused to have a drink with him. But step by step he realized how Schindler's character really was. And near the end, when Schindler offered to have a drink with him at the end of the war, he preferred to have one straight away. In my opinion watching this movie is just a MUST!!
Gilberte de Courgenay (1941)
A nice swiss propaganda film produced during World War II.
This film tells a very light story of a charming and helpful young woman who lived in Courgenay, a Swiss village near to the French border, during World War I. I think when you watch this movie it is quite useful to have some background informations on Switzerland during World War II. In 1941 the country was completely surrounded by the German and Italian territories, Hitler was still very successful and the Swiss feared an attack of the Germans nearly every day. And even inside Switzerland itself there was a lot of Nazi propaganda trying to wear down the people and so to get them to join the Nazi Germany voluntary. So the purpose of this film was to shake the swiss people up to keep their ideologies of freedom and independence. It is done by showing them the Swiss soldiers during World War I, who were in a very similar situation. But their efforts were rewarded by the awareness of having kept Switzerland free from foreign aggressions. And remember, Switzerland was able to get through World War II unharmed. Of course I as a patriotic Swiss like this movie! And with above informations you might as well!
Der Tunnel (2001)
Well done, a very exciting film.
This movie has just been shown on TV. It not only gives you a good impression on the tunnel project itself and the escape of a number of people from the former east Germany. It also shows you how the mood of the population at that time (1962) was, especially the mood of the students protesting against the wall. This film is based on a true story, the one of the "Tunnel 29". 29 stands for the number of people who were able to escape through this tunnel. There is only one scene I did not like that much. Harry Melchior (the leading role) runs through the tunnel right after he held up the colonel who now tries to catch him together with his fellow men. Somewhere in the tunnel there is a sign "You are now entering the French section of Berlin". The colonel and all the others do right stop exactly below this sign and Harry Melchior even salutes him from the "west side" of Berlin. I think this is not quite real, because the colonel certainly would not bother to cross the border inside the tunnel, or would he? Nevertheless a good movie, it is worth spending the time to watch it.
