Changing Lanes (2002)
Boring plot, unrealistic character actions
A series of bad choices draws two men into a cataclysmic conflict. Unfortunately, the choices that these men make are so outlandish that it's hard to believe that anybody would actually act this way. The movie is quite preachy as well, suggesting that the all the evils of the world can be reduced to simple monetary greed. Alas, perhaps the biggest flaw is that the plot just isn't that interesting: Two men's paths cross and they decide to ruin each other's lives? Please.
Revolution OS (2001)
A nice documentary about open source software
A nice documentary about the open source software revolution. None of the material presented here will come as a surprise to the computer techies out there, but the interview format of the film does give a feel for the personalities involved, including Linus Torvalds, Richard Stallman, Bruce Perens, and Eric Raymond. What is most intriguing is how each person is portrayed as feeling that their contribution to the open source community stands out as the most important part of the revolution: Torvalds' Linux, Stallman's GNU Project, Raymond's "The Cathedral and the Bazaar", Perens' "Open Source Definition", and Behlendorf's Apache. Whether these people truly feel this way or whether it is attributable to creative editing is an exercise left to the viewer.
Road to Perdition (2002)
Don't go in sleepy
I accidentally watched the second half of this movie first, but that really didn't change the outcome. The plot is Gladiator-esque: A trusted lieutenant finds himself hunted and entails to take down the system that he once was a part of. On a deeper level, there is supposed to be a story about a boy learning to love his estranged father, but this never really gels. Nevertheless, relatively solid film making,
although this is definitely a s-l-o-w movie. Don't go in sleepy.
Lara Croft: Tomb Raider (2001)
A true bomb
You go into a movie like Tomb Raider expecting it to be pretty bad. Such is the fate of most movies based on videos games. However, when said movie features Angelina Jolie, you at least expect to get some babelicious treats in the process. Unfortunately, Jolie's terrible acting doesn't even deliver that. A true bomb.
