The Blackout (2019)
4/10
Good at the beginning, OK in the middle, Very bad at the end
26 December 2020
Warning: Spoilers
Just binge watched it on amazon. I am Russian native, so watched it in Russian. Oh boy, the ending was disappointing. I really wanted it to be a good movie, but if you are a hardcore Sci-fi fan like me, you will not like the ending. I facepalmed myself to unconsciousness in the last 20 minutes of the last episode.

What I liked about the move:
  • great visuals
  • entertaining story for the first couple of episodes

What I didn't like:
  • The motivation of some characters lacks logic and is sometimes just plain stupid
  • The dialogues sometimes tend to turn into hysteria without any good reason. In general lots of latest Russian movies have this illness.
  • The most stupid Sci-fi twist you will ever encounter: the spaceship of god-like aliens is landing on Earth and opens the big door while everyone on the ship is in hibernation, with life-supplying pipelines running all over the place in plane view, waiting for the protagonists to conveniently destroy them... No defense systems, no support crew, no preparations. Just land, open the door and see what happens. OMG, COME ON! Those guys can send things instantaneously through the universe, define gravity, read minds, supposed to be creators of humans and are our gods. Why on Earth would they be that stupid?
  • Also, what the hell happened on that roof at the end? I mean, the alien guy just killed the bad alien and all those zombies, warned everyone that the big ship is coming and was ready to help the humanity. Everybody already knew his motivations and his very cold logic. He gave us zero new information. But suddenly half of the team turns into whiny idiots and manage to kill the only hope the humanity have. And the almighty god just stands there and allows it to happen!

You see why I didn't like the ending?

Awesome, but only if you understand satire
11 October 2020
I just want to defend this movie, because I came here to see at least 8 stars and was shocked its 6 something currently. Its a great satire to what happens today in the world and some people just dont get it I guess. Great actors, great story and humor.

Great book, bad movie
14 October 2018
As a big fan of Lukjanenko, the author of the book and the book itself, I so wished the movie would be any good. But unfortunately it isn't. And I am very sad to give this review

First of all I would like to thank the author for a great story. For some reasons this book puts me in a special mental state, so I have listened to an audio version of it more than enough to know the story by heart.

Now about the movie. My major complain goes to the screenwriter. Almost all story lines and characters, including the main ones were changed so heavily, that the whole thing stopped to make any sense after the first 30 minutes of the movie. I probably said "whaat the hell??" 100 times watching the movie. Somehow, to my regret, bad screenwriting became an epidemic in the russian movie industry. It's like they think that if they add some visual effects to the movie, they are justified to make a sloppy work on the story, which is what a good movie is actually always about. Common guys, that is just a lazy thinking!

Ok, you might say that I am biased by the book and it's always difficult to convert a book to a movie. So what if you haven't read the book? To that I would say - it will be even worse to watch, because you will just fail to understand what the hell is going on. Characters suddenly start talking about things and calling names you've never heard before. In my opinion you will not understand motivations and the logic, so you will be left to sit and wonder who is doing what and why.

My advise - skip the movie, read or listen the book.

don't waste your time
26 March 2017
Well, I went to watch it with my friends not knowing anything about the this movie. My summary - don't waste your time on this one. The plot is stupid, the characters and their actions are plain dumb and the final message is .. well I understand it as "we humans are special, because we can love". I really regret paying for it and spending my time trying to understand the inner workings of the director's brain, which obviously has to be one of a 10 years old.
