Filmando: Batalla en el cielo (2004)
either you like it / or you don't
well !! i liked it , Was a difficult film to watch owing to its pace. Have to remark i'm so impressed with the non performance of all the artists ,that it was really refreshing to see these pack of people who were truly just characters and not mere actors. Its a bold film, the shock value of this piece still has me doubting the directors intentions about having it stay on his final edits. The potion of graphic nudity and the unsimulated performance is a touch above the required potion. He could have done without being this graphic. Its a vision based film ,a directors film all the way. though i may not agree to a lot of things present- i give it to the director for his conviction of staying by them. Ana- I have to declare i'm so in love with this lady. She has indeed done a wonderful job with her role. Just wondering if those Tibetien tattoos were real? lol Ana is one actress i would love to work with in the future. She truly was the "ANNA" the film required. And yes again Hats off to her commitment to the role - I don't have it in me to do what she did ! THAT WAS BRAVE INDEED ! The flags ceremony was all to confusing to me. Maybe its a local thing but why was it repeated ? Marcos He did a pretty good job as well, considering hes some guy at the govt. office and not a trained actor. He adds flavour to the film.
I would watch the film again ,not soon, but in a while from now . JUST FOR ANNA. she was wonderful. I'm all smitten !!
roll camera!
Talash (1969)
new age for a vintage
Just saw the film on television. two things have defined the movie watching experience - 1] super cool production design, ALL marks to the "art director" as they are known. It was absolutely "super"!.Mr. Balraj sahani's office, the conference room, the pub at which Helen does her gig, the urban Charla Tagore's wardrobe, farmhouse. The couches/ the red phones the color palette ,, is was impressed and how. Indeed a job well done!. 2] The camera movements, -Though the cinematography was average, like any other film from that age,it had quite a few tracks, tilts, crane downs etc which were impressive. Usually when one watches a film from the 60s,one expects either safe blocks or tacky zoom ins zoom outs etc. This film was relatively fluid with its camera movements.
Ralhan did well to make a regular film, him featuring in the film was just a lame excuse to get hugging &touching Helen. I'm sure she must have been a rage at the time for her European looks.
Mr. Sahani was a bit out of his hat here, i like him playing the dignified man, here he seems out place pimpin his daughter.
Saifs mom did well. I believe now, auntiji was very pretty during her prime. Soha is'nt half of her mother.
kumar gauravs father as usual was sloppy. i guess i'm too hard on him but i feel he sucked -always.he was ugly. Gaurav looks better than his father.I'd stop at rajender bashing cause the senior mans no more/ so i pause, with all due respect......
the o.p ralhan comedy track was stupid but i guess one should take it with a pinch of coke! it makes sense - you have better understanding of content that way- you laugh much more as well !!!
another thing to look out for is the outdoor shots of Bombay during the late 60s. what a beauty it was ,and what a hellhole it is now.
watch it if the streets are flooded, phone lines r down, in prison, in coma, when in interior ladakh with only one TV channel etc etc. cheers.
Shopgirl (2005)
goods delivered no breakage
Shopgirl is the "exibit A" of safe film making, BECAUSE, its so bloody SAFE. Anand hasn't tried anything fancy, Mr.Martin behaved ,Claire was top class, and the other guy [ well sorry he had nothing to do so......!]. It is a pretty tight film for a lazy plot. Its was difficult to decide to cypher if stands as a writers film or a directors film, reason being -steve features in it. Steve being a senior performer knows exactly what he'z doin on screen as an actor AS he has written it himself! so where does that leave Anand? did the director take his cues from the actor or did the actor in steve martin take his from the director? .claire did well to hold her ground with such a flat role. she was studious with her performance i guess she was the most believable amongstthe entire lot.
much has been said bout the cinematography being poor/ to my opinion the DP did a good job/ a few scenes could'ev been better/ but all in all he was pretty successful in lighting up the people who did all the talking and weave the plot. The subtle color changes at in the B/G did work for me.
we all love to beat up the film makers who come up with somethn like this - a simple film based on matters of the heart. Thats because we all are touched at some level . this is a true film , its an honest male film, we are like this. we hate it. but we know it.....
thats cause we know what Ray would'ev done once he bid goodbye to mira at the gallery in the last sequence.
he went home/ pretended to take a shower.........and.......took an hour.....!
we know it don't we............ ?
