Brick (2005)
A wonderfully shot comedy
Those who don't care for this movie don't get it. It's a comedy, i've read the poo-pooers, they are missing the premise for this film, and i don't know how.
The movie is a hard boiled detective story with adult themes and lines but delivered by high schoolers. And about 75% of the time it isn't meant to be taken seriously. To me, the movie seems to be a great knock on horrible adaptations with a young all star casts (i.e. Cruel Intentions) and has a great homage to films like Maltese Falcon, it's sort of like watching a high school play of a film noir, except the humor is intentional.
If you like quality cinema; it's excellent noir photography, good acting and a good laugh. Just don't walk in expecting a serious film.
X-Men: The Last Stand (2006)
Polls say kids like violence and lots of mutants
This movie is a perfect example of corporate interest over a (in theory) creative enterprise. Lots of mutants, thin predictable plot, and a 5 minute Benz SUV commercial right before the climax. Now i know why Hugh Jackman wants to do Broadway instead of playing wolverine.
They leave it open to do a 4, (even though it's called LAST stand???) if they do I won't waste the two hours of my life.
Bottom line: if you can switch off your entire brain to reduce yourself to a drooling buffoon, you will love this movie. It has action and lot of mutants, if you have a brain, and want to go see something with substance save your 8 dollars or go watch Brick instead.
Crumb (1994)
Portrait of an Artist
I'm writing this mostly as a rebuttal to some of the bad reviews. This is an honest portrait of an artist, like him or not, it's well done, and certainly thought provoking; and while he may not be the best spoken man on earth I thought the film was amazing. But be forewarned he is, to put it plainly, perverted and incredibly eccentric but also honest and self aware, take it for what you will.
**possible spoilers below** One comment accused the film of being voyeuristic and going against what Crumb's art is about-which is ludicrous, in the film he sits in a few lounges and draws portraits of people in his sketchpad that are more than voyeuristic- everything about his art lends itself to this kind of look into his life. Hell, he has autobiographical comics that are just as voyeuristic as the film. It's Crumb in his own words closing a chapter of his life.
Shopgirl (2005)
They're lying-it's an awful 2 hour ego trip
**possible spoilers**
I saw it because i love Rushmore-and Schwartzmann, he was great, and Claire Daines did well enough, but the writing, the plot, and Steve Martin were god awful.
I find the most heinous offense in this film is the narration from a secondary character that adds plot and insight into things he doesn't, or shouldn't at least, know. The narration came in at the middle of the film and in a scene that Martin wasn't even in, and then his narration was sparsely scattered throughout the remainder of the film.
Unless you're hopelessly optimistic you should see through the poorly written unlikely character of the quasi-pedophilic somehow emotionally aware Ray Porter (Martin).
Schwartzmann gave an awkward-hilarious performance, similar to the performances in any of the other films he's been in, Martin's writing makes him out to be an two dimensional first date nightmare in the beginning-and magically through some book(s) and books on tape becomes some sweet tender lover by the end? At any rate- it's awful and hardly worth writing about-save yourself two hours, pick up something else.
