24 Little Hours (2020)
I'm really torn on this one
This was a recommendation and a movie I'd certainly never had watched otherwise. Not only do I generally dislike British cinema but I hate any "Gangster" related nonsense especially such low rent stuff like this.
It's a revenge tale, a newly released convict (but we don't know what he had done) seeking retribution against drug dealers that may or may not have killed his sister. On paper this movie stood absolutely no chance with me, but it does have redeeming features.
It's paced perfectly, it's wonderfully constructed and the 4 main characters gel very well. It succeeds in making you absolutely question just who are the antagonists, to levels I wasn't expecting.
It was smarter than I would have given any film of this type credit for. The double story telling was interesting if not lingered a little too long on the police side of it. Fiona Skinner, who plays the main detective was believable of someone having a bad day and held her own in all her scenes even when she was beaten.
It does have its low budget flaws, and as much as the filmmakers highlight it was shot in 8 days (I'm sure there was a reason for this) it would have benefited with a few more. But when it put it in to context, 8 days, low budget and you get this result it made me a bit more tolerant for this genre of film.
So for me this was better than it should have been, but does have its issues.
A Landscape of Lies - Directors Cut (2011)
For what it is
I enjoy a crime mystery and was drawn to this more because of the crime that took place with the fat cats behind it than the one in the plot yet that doesn't change the fact this film is alright for what it is.
It's a low budget, student type indie film, some never was actors and soon to be z listers, a few cars, a few girls, a couple of nice ups and downs and a turn by TV presenter and ex weather girl Andrea Mclean. It's not my usual watch however this was half decent.
80% of the cast turned up and gave a believable performance, the edit seems a little whacked in places. I see this is now titled a director's cut so maybe that is why. Considering the court case and documentary I have to give it up for the team for pushing forward with this.
It is not fantastic but if you watch it for what it is you may walk away from it now feeling like you just lost 90mins of your life.
Acts of Vengeance (2017)
Punisher lite
Didn't know much about this but liked the sound of it so thought I'd give it a go, glad I did as I really enjoyed it, solid story with some kick-ass action and nice twist.
Antonio Banderas does a cracking job showing off he's fighting skills, there is a couple of weak acting roles but nothing to put you off.
Maze Runner: The Death Cure (2018)
running around in circles
It's not a'maze'ing but it is really good (see what I did there?)
Great ongoing story and this one was no exception, very fast paced with enough action to keep any adrenaline junkie happy,
I loved the zombie type people in this and the last film and would of loved to seen more of them as they nailed it, had a Mad Max meets Lord of the flies feel to it.
The Commuter (2018)
Taken this ain't
It's good but not great, The trailer sells it well and I'd heard all good things about this so I had high hopes leading into watching it but for me it didn't live up to my expectations, don't get me wrong it's a good entertaining watch but lacked a bit of something special.
I worked out very easily who he had to find and who was the bad guy... and it turned out to be the lazy scriptwriter
12 Strong (2018)
solid peromances, solid film
When it comes to true stories about modern war missions it isn't going to get much better then this.
I was very impressed, well paced from start to finish with some with some great action throughout, the actors done a solid job to I found myself instantly warming to each character.
Well worth a watch
Deliver Us from Evil (2014)
For something so evil, it's good
Oh wow, where was this little gem hiding, took me by surprise I was expecting a run of the mill 'OK' horror but got 'The Exorcist' meets 'Se7en' gem of goodness...
I'm not a religious person but this gets you thinking, great story from start to finish and some amazing acting, slightly on the long side but worth it
Wind Chill (2007)
white people problems
Good idea but unfortunately the film lacked any real charisma, very slow and nowhere near as much scary moments as I'd of liked to see,
Emily Blunt did a decent job but was let down by everything else.
Ride Along 2 (2016)
Hart brings the heart
Loved the first one so this had fill, It's not as good or funny as Ride Along 1 but I did enjoy it, Had some really funny moments and some very sexy women topped off with some cool cars and some cool action.
Cube & Hart worked really well together the chemistry is just right with the funny good cop and moody bad cop duo, The story is pretty good but nothing we haven't seen many times before.
American Reunion (2012)
Needs more colour but I'd eat another slice
I've had a soft spot for the American Pie franchise from the day I see the first one and this one is up there with the best.
Great way to continue their journey, this had me laughing out loud many times and even though this is the 4th time I've seen this I still enjoyed it just as much as I did the first time.
I really hope this isn't the last time we see the gang getting up to crazy funny things together but I do wish they would add some colour to the cast.
Concussion (2015)
Smith shines
Interesting story brought to life by Will Smith who does an amazing job as always, a little on the long side but worth a watch.
It does however show that little will ever change in professional sports or politics.
Grimsby (2016)
funny for all the wrong reasons
Although this is the second time I've seen this it still had me belly laughing all the way through, some proper funny moments that in pure Sacha Baron Cohen style pushes the mark to the point of wrongness.
Away from the comedy this film has some great action scenes that wouldn't look out of place in a Bond movie, I was impressed with the Point Of View shots.
Intouchables (2011)
Heart warming
The film was everything and more and was yet another snub to the diverse story telling Hollywood is forever telling us it wants.
It's a crime this was overlooked for its heart felt greatness and proves that the Oscars are just blind to the fact this was a great film and with superb performances.
