Keep Breathing (2022)
Surpringly good
I'm a bit baffled by the unwarranted imo poor reviews on this. The flashbacks people are complaining about are the whole point of the series. This show wasn't about surviving a plane crash in the wilderness. It was about surviving equally devastating childhood trauma. I went into this with low expectations given the main characters impossiblly good looks etc. However I found myself binging the whole show, really feeling moved and relating to her struggle. Yes there were parts that were unrealistic in terms of her survival without food etc. But this only made me focus on the internal struggle to survive. A solid outing from netflix I thoroughly enjoyed it.
Holding (2022)
So disappointed
I'm actually half way through the book Holding by Graham Norton who I love as an author. Imagine my delight when I saw it had been made into a TV drama! Unfortunately though it has been thoroughly butchered and just doesn't work. I get that the story and characters have been adapted for TV however this has resulted in the heart of the book being lost. Some of the characters just don't make sense and seem superfluous. I like to see diversity on screen but this verges on woke with some of the characters seeming highly unlikely for a small West Cork town. The comedy aspect also feels forced, unnecessary, almost sketch like and just not funny. It gets in the way of the story and I couldn't take it seriously or, frankly, watch on. Its a shame as Graham writes wonderful characters and there are some great actors in the cast. I feel this has been a wasted opportunity.
