The Walking Dead (2010)
This show is for zombies
If your brain has been turned to moosh from stupid character on TV this show is for you. Truly appropriately titled the walking dead. I wouldn't be surprised if these "survivors" turned out to be true zombies. Their brain are obviously gone. I don't want to go through the mile long list of irrational actions and situations, because they have all been mentioned many times over in other comments. But the writers of this show is what puzzles me. The graphic novel which the show is based on, while not perfect, is very serviceable as a story board to build upon. Why on earth did the show producers/runner go to such length to abandon that material and pursue the dumbo mess that is on screen now. The heavy handed and obviously forced dramatic situations are so hard to watch. I am watching this show because my friend and I are fans of the original source material and hope against hope this thing turns around.
Don't bother watching this if you are not willing to suspend your intelligence altogether. or watch with a drinking game, take a sip of beer every time a character do something stupid. You will be drunk in no time and the show is 10x better.
Avatar (2009)
The grand canyon is just another crack on the ground
Yes, the plot is predictable. Yes, it being done countless times before. Yes the message is not ambiguous. Yes the characters are black and white. But Shakespeare's work also had these elements. Its how you tell the story and not all about the plot itself. This film is an great movie going experience. Enjoy it, and stop complaining about the weak plot. Different kind of movies have different strength and weaknesses. If you want a killer sport car don't complain about the lack of cargo space. Some people just want to not enjoy themselves. Is the movie perfect? No. Would it have been better to have a improved story? Always. But the story is good enough for this jaw dropping movie going experience. 2 words for the people yet to see the film. IMAX, 3D.
spoiler alert "I for one did not like the blue tree monkeys and their tree hugging ways. But it was a blast seeing them getting their asses handed to them by the "Sky People". I laughed so hard when their overgrown tree house got demolished. So yes even people who don't like the enviro-message can enjoy this movie."
The Passion of the Mao (2006)
light hearted look at mao the the revolution
I am no historian but this film is quite enjoyable. I think the story of Mao is a mixed bag. First, I just like to say that the people who think Mao killed millions of people and is on par with Hitler are seriously misinformed. I would for their sake advice not show off such a view to informed friends because they make fools out of themselves. Its like saying George W Bush is like Mussolini. Mao certainly had many personal flaws and made mistakes in leading a new nation. But on a personal level he was a charismatic leader and inspired a passionate following. In this aspect you can compare him to a Hitler but also to FDR or JFK or Jesus. I think the film points out that Mao is not some cunning evil mastermind slaughtering people for pure pleasure. Mao largely wanted to improve the country. I think personal attacks on Mao because of the political upheaval and the challenges of a new nation had to face is ridiculous. Though this movie have a bit of Pro-Mao bias I think it should be viewed as a counter weight to the overwhelming negative bias in the media today.
The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe (2005)
am I missing something? "minor spoilers"
There must be something I am missing about the movie. It makes very little sense to me and maybe things are explained better in the book. I have no problem accepting a magical world through a doorway, a noble lion that rules a kingdom and such, but please don't tell me a evil witch/queen who knows of a prophecy of her demise involving 4 "children of Adam and eve" does not have the sense to kill one as soon as she had the opportunity. And the "idiot Queen" had multiple chances to save herself by killing one of the children. This so called Queen then proceeds to miss read some fine print on an old law and can't even do a proper killing. Not to mention under her employment is the most useless pack of wolves in existence. They couldn't even injure two defenseless girls in what seems like 30 minutes of time?! The leader of the pack then falls on a sword and kills himself?! And about these "kids", they falls in a frozen river and shakes it off like it was a dip in a tub? they'd turn into ice cubes, and not the rapper/fake actor either. Then with what seems like an afternoon of sword training, these "kids" are out and hacking about on a battlefield?! Are you kidding me?! at least give me the "he ate the battle skill apple" or something. The list go on and on with these stupid happenings that make no sense to me. I know this is a children's story, I know it is fantasy. But please have some basic logic and realism. I am sure the ice is still cold in Narnia, I am sure the Queen dosen't want to die. Then please act like it. That my rant on this so called epic movie. I hope the book was better.
so turn your brain off and prepare to get retarded when entering this picture.
The Matrix Reloaded (2003)
whatever
blah blah blah. another summer action film. seen it, been there, whatever. I have forgotten most of the film already. I seem to recall there was this 50 min long fight between Neo and Agent Smith clones, I think I fell asleep so I don't really know how long it was. Reeves and Fishburne seems to be having a bad acting contest. Reeves wins simply because he has more screen time. The plot, which the Wacko Bros dug out of a fortune cookie, stumbles on and on. The whole film explodes on to the screen like a case of bad diarrhea, painful to endure but feels relieved at the end. Then you forget about how unpleasant this little ordeal was and buys another triple bacon cheese burger, and another ticket to the next big summer blockbuster. Of the above I am guilty and guilty, so who am I to complain about the crapology of this fine feature film, especially now 2am in the morning.
a solid 3 stars out of 10. :-)
Ringu (1998)
TOO LATE SUCKAS !!
If you have already seen the American remake of this film, then please don't watch this movie. Its already too late. "The Ring" has ruined any chance that you might enjoy "Ringu". In my mind there is no doubt that Ringu is the superior film, but for those who has seen "The Ring", your knowledge of the plot and characters will ruin the element of mystery, thus ruining the movie as well. All you can do now is note the subtleness and taste with which the first film was handled versus the MTV style of the remake. Another factor to further corrupt your experience is your own expectations. Surely now most people seeking out this little movie has already seen and enjoyed the remake or have heard about how scary it is. So now you are thinking this is got to be a really really creepy movie. Well no movie can meet your expectations with this kind of hype. So the lesson is, go watch the good movies with subtitles before the remake ruins it for you. ie: Spoorloos before the Vanishing, Wages of Fear before Sorcerer, and Ikiru before the sure to be monkey ass remake coming soon to a theater near you.
Blade II (2002)
zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz
"spoilers...if this movie can be spoiled."
All I wanted going into this movie was some cheesy action, and some bad one liners. I know there will be no plot. I know there will be terrible acting. I know this will be a bad movie. I thought i was prepared. Well, the cheese certainly was thick, the lines ... terrible. The fighting was nothing special. The CG sequences was amusing but i've seen better in video games. But the thing that really struck me was how BORING this movie is. I fell asleep twice in this thing. The movie pretty much went like this... Talky talky...cue random rock music #3, Blade fight homeless vampires, talky talky, play rock music #8 Blade fight vamps ninjas, talky talky, rock music #12 Blade fights rejects from Mimic with vampire biker gang... on and on and on... wait! i think Snipes expression changed.... naaaaa... not really. More random violence, then Blade dukes it out with final boss...yaaaa. Blade is killed!... Not. Blade wins! surprise surprise. Wow! Blade is suffering from a fatal heart attack! no, no, i think thats just Snipes trying to act. Looks painful, hopefully he doesn't do this acting thing too often. zzzzzzzzzz what movie did i watch just now? what's my name? where am I?
Fa yeung nin wah (2000)
i liked it!
as with many of Wong's films, a lot of people find them to be boring and confusing. Well i like them and i like this film too. I went out and rented it on dvd and i watched it 3 times. It is a very subtle movie that provides an intoxicating experience. for those who did not enjoy it...... you just wasted 2 hours of your life.... too bad...muhahahahaha.
A.I. Artificial Intelligence (2001)
BEST MOVIE THIS SUMMER!! ... so far
" SPOILERS!!!!" This movies is terrible, but the rest of the summer movies are worse! (memento is not a summer movie) AI had a promising start and soon you forget this is just a cross between 2001 and E.T. The Acting is solid all around and the plot is intriguing. But toward the end of the film Mr. Spielberg could not resist the power of cheese. When the bear brought out the lock of hair from " mommy" ,half of the $100 pepsi I just drank came outa my nose. And when the alien started to "talk" to David... well ... i had no more pepsi. Even with all the flaws, A.I. with it's Artificial emotions and intelligence is miles ahead of the likes of The Fast and the Furious, Pearl Harbor, Sword Fish, Tomb Raider, Dr. Do-little 2... etc..etc.
So.. go and see this film .... instead of the others.
Mononoke-hime (1997)
For those who do not like this movie
this is for all the people who doesn't like this movie because; its too weird, doesn't make any sense, don't like the art, it's shallow and pretentious, unimaginative, not Disney, not for kids, other people like it, critics like it, flat characters, preachy, not my cup of tea, i don't like the ending, tedious... etc. Look at all the people who does enjoy it. You are missing out on a great film. I have one word for you all -- LEARN
Wo hu cang long (2000)
if you liked this movie then maybe...
For those who enjoyed CTHD, but thought it is still too " hollywood " then try a film called Ashes of Time. Both movie have similar themes but Ashes is more abstract and thought provoking. As for CTHD, i enjoyed the film and is please to see the public(US) can accept such an "art" film. Maybe good film making and box office success does not always have to be apart.
I see that after the high marks that CTHD has received recently some negative whiplash has also arrived. Its the same with many good movies... first people love it and praise it, then the people who has to hate things that the majority likes shows up and fart out a few bad comments so they can sleep at night knowing that they are special. Well, good for them. To be honest, I myself went into CTHD with low expectations, thinking its going to be another over the top action film. But I was pleasantly surprised when Chow Yun Fat did not leap out of the trees with both pistols blazing. The film was actually made with dignity and sincerity .. even with all the flying around.
So for people who have not seen CTHD please go see it. And for the people who have seen CTHD try Ashes of Time.
