Incredibly frustrating movie
15 August 2019
Warning: Spoilers
First things first, I've never read the book this movie's based off of, and I don't really plan on it either. I wasn't expecting this movie to be great, but I also wasn't expecting it to be so...frustrating. There's not a single likable character in the movie whatsoever. I wasn't rooting for anyone

My biggest problem with the movie was the main character's love interest, Aiden. From the first time you see him he proves himself to be an extremely creepy and desperate stalker, but this is only shown for maybe 10 minutes before the movie dismisses the fact that he FOLLOWED THIS GIRL TO HER HOUSE and treats him like some kind of hero for the rest of it...and then when he and Vivian (the main girl), get into an argument, he BLAMES HER for the fact that they even know each other and Vivian doesn't ever call him out on this.

The other characters in the movie aren't great, either. Vivian is, in my opinion, an extremely boring character that's not fun to watch or to listen to because she's WAAAY too stoic. The movie's villains just kind of...exist, I guess, aside from Vivian's cousin Rafe who the movie tries way too hard to make you think is cool when he has some of the worst lines ever ("I AM the train"). Like I said before, though, every single important character in this film is almost completely unlikable. I didn't even know who to root for.

I will say, though, the movie does an okay job at keeping you entertained. As annoying as the movie was, I did care about what was happening, at least a little bit. Reading other reviews, it seems like this is one of those movie adaptations that strays way too far from its source material, so maybe the book is actually really good and it's only the movie that's awful. Like I've said, though, I don't have much interest in reading it for myself. To be honest, I'm not sure who I'd recommend this film to. If you want werewolves and cheesy romance, Twilight's already got you covered.

The Boarding School (2007–2010)

Interesting show, but can be VERY stupid
14 August 2019
One of my Spanish classes in high school watched a few episodes of this show and I decided to watch the rest myself. It's been a while so my memory's a bit hazy, but I remember thinking that the show was okay overall. There are 7 seasons, and the conflict seems quite simple in Seasons 1 and 2. Around the time Season 5 starts, things start to pick up a little, and Season 7 is absolutely insane in just how massive the conflict gets. It's impossible to predict where the show goes, and that makes it a fun watch that always leaves you wondering what will happen next.

The characters are very likable overall (particularly the main ensemble; Julia in particular is one of my favorite characters ever), and the show does a good job at making you feel attached to them. However, this show's antagonists are some of the most evil I've ever seen and are great at making you hate them with a passion.

All of that said, the show gets REALLY stupid at points, especially in the later seasons. Season 7 in particular had so many insane plot twists that they started to become annoying and predictable. The show is also a mystery/thriller kind of show with some supernatural elements, but it's one of those shows that tries to make you think it's a horror when it really isn't. I can't even count the number of times there's one of those "fake jumpscares" where they play the startling sound when it turns out to just be someone walking past a room or something like that. It's frustrating because it feels like the show is trying way too hard to be scary when it really isn't (although it can be VERY disturbing at times). In addition, the show is somewhat unrealistic; the resolution of the last episode is pretty much only obtained through dumb luck. There are a lot of parts where the protagonists really only get anywhere because the story says they should, not because of things they did themselves.

Overall, I do think this show is worth watching, even if it can be stupid. If you're interested in Spanish and want to see some Spanish media, this might be worth a watch.

Very stupid but fun movie
14 August 2019
I went to see this movie for no reason other than to have another "so bad it's good" movie to laugh at, but this movie was surprisingly decent. The movie does take a while to get going (it's surprisingly long at about an hour and 40 minutes), but once it does, it's entertaining until the end. The characters are all very likable in their own ways (including the villains), and it's a fun movie to watch overall. That said, I'm not sure I'd recommend this to people that aren't at least a little bit familiar with the Dora the Explorer TV show, because if you aren't then a LOT of the jokes and references will be lost on you (and some of said jokes get run into the ground). If you can get past that, though, then this movie's absolutely worth seeing. I didn't even like Dora the Explorer growing up, but I can definitely say I enjoyed myself watching this movie.

Noobz (2012)
3/10
Your typical bad comedy movie, but with gamers
13 July 2019
Warning: Spoilers
Noobz's horrible poster made me think it was going to be one of the usual "adults don't know how technology/teenagers work" movies (ex. Unfriended). Then the trailer made me think it would be a boring comedy-but-not-really film (ex. Grown Ups 2). To this movie's credit, the people behind it do seem to have an idea of video games and gaming culture (even if it is exaggerated). That said, though, it's still a bad movie. A VERY bad movie.

Obviously, the most important part of a comedy is that the movie is funny. There are a few good parts, but Noobz is otherwise horrendously unfunny, and at times, borderline offensive. The movie's brought down by extremely forced edgy jokes; the team of black kids is led by your typical thug (who pulls the race card to get his way at one point), one of the main characters' ENTIRE personality is built around the fact that he's gay but doesn't want to admit it (I didn't count the number of gay jokes made at his expense, but it had to have been at least 30...and by the way, his Gamertag is "Fragget"), and the disabled character is used as a punchline quite a lot as well. There are also jokes about things like rape. I don't mind dark humor, but it has to be more than just "HA HA TABOO THING FUNNY", and this movie doesn't really do that.

The worst part of the movie, though, is the ending. Basically, the plot here is that the four main characters are trying to win a gaming tournament with a grand prize of $400,000 and split the money amongst themselves. Throughout the movie, one of the characters meets a girl and starts to build a relationship with her, and it is eventually revealed that the girl's parents lost her house and she wants some of the prize money to buy it back. The guy hears this and decides to let the girl win the tournament and the money, completely screwing his team over and making the entire movie pointless. There was a very easy way to fix this: why did he not just win the tournament and give the girl his $100,000????? That way, the team would have left with their money and the girl would be still able to buy her house back. It would be a win-win. Very frustrating.

Anyway, while Noobz does a decent job at providing a SOMEWHAT accurate representation of gamers and their community, that only means so much. It might be entertaining if you're watching it with a group of friends, but most of the film isn't very interesting. Gaming is also not as prevalent in this movie as you'd think; until they actually get to the tournament (about halfway through the hour and 40 minute long film), it plays out very similarly to your typical comedy, so I doubt even most "I'M AN EPIC GAMER" types would enjoy this that much. It's a unique movie, sure, but it's not a good one.

Sea Level (2011)
3/10
Better than I expected, but still bad
13 July 2019
I was expecting Sea Level to be a cheap Finding Nemo ripoff similar to those bootleg Video Brinquedo movies, but it has a lot more effort put into it than those. The movie does have some interesting ideas, at least, but it's EXTREMELY slow. I almost fell asleep multiple times watching this, it's a huge slog up until the last 20 minutes or so.

The best parts of this movie are the action sequences, they're actually pretty engaging and fun to watch. There are a lot of them towards the end of the movie, but for the first ~70% of it, you'll mostly just be watching the characters talk. This would not be an issue, except this movie's dialogue is just so BORING. I don't think there was a single joke or witty line in the entire movie aside from a few sight gags. In addition, the movie's voice acting is...not great. The voices of the humans are all terrible, and the voice of Pup (the main character) gets pretty grating after a while...he just sounds really whiny the whole time.

I also don't think this is a very good movie for children; this is partially because the movie is extremely boring and won't retain their interest for very long, but also because a lot of it is just...not really appropriate to be showing to young kids. Mind you, I don't like it when parents go over the top with sheltering their children, but this movie is a bit more...extreme than most other children's animated movies I've seen. There's blood, animal carcasses, a physically and verbally abusive family, and at one point one of the characters says "hell". I wouldn't call my parents overprotective, but I doubt even they wouldn't have let me watch this movie.

All of those problems aside, the movie does have some good parts. I liked how the water and land animals kind of came together at the end, that was a neat idea. Making the main character a mudskipper (a fish that can breathe and walk above water) was also a cool concept, and it becomes very important later on in the movie. The other characters weren't much to write home about, though, aside from the chickens. The chickens were a lot of fun. Aside from them, the rest of the ensemble cast is pretty lame, and there's a "villain" (the eel) that literally does nothing in the entire movie. You could take him out of the movie completely and nothing would change. Also, like I said before, the action sequences were entertaining.

Overall, while Sea Level is WAAAY better than I expected, it is not a good movie. Watch Finding Nemo or even Shark Tale instead of this.

Not a bad movie, but there are definitely problems
13 July 2019
Decided to give this movie a watch because while critics didn't seem to care for it too much, a lot of moviegoers were all like "THIS IS THE GREATEST MOVIE OF ALL TIME". Do I think this the best movie ever made? Not really, no. Would I go out of my way to watch it again? Nope. That said, though, this movie was pretty decent and I can definitely see why so many people seemed to like it as much as they did.

First things first, the high point of this movie was definitely the visuals. Lots of bright colors, smooth scene transitions, great editing and special effects. The movie is really nice to look at throughout, nothing looks bad or out of place.

Secondly, I'm not the biggest fan of musicals, but for the most part, I thought the songs in this movie were pretty good! That being said, though, I think the songs that wound up becoming overplayed in other places (A Million Dreams, Never Enough, and ESPECIALLY This Is Me) are the worse ones in the movie. My personal favorites were Come Alive and The Other Side, but I still thought the soundtrack was good overall. There aren't any songs that I would outright call bad.

With the positives out of the way, time for the negatives...honestly, most of this movie's issues come from its plot. To put it bluntly, this movie has one of the most contrived storylines I've ever seen. From pretty much the second this movie starts, you'll know how it ends; most conflicts are resolved within like 15 minutes, and the character of P.T. Barnum goes through a very predictable arc of "guy is poor and ridiculed by everybody -> guy works hard and becomes successful -> guy's success goes to his head and he turns his back on everyone that helped him -> everyone that was wronged by guy turns on him -> guy realizes he was wrong and makes amends and/or goes back to his old life". Additionally, the beginning of this movie is VERY slow (it's basically one long montage) and up until around the part you hear Come Alive, it's pretty boring. In contrast, the last few scenes of the movie happen so quickly that the ending almost feels abrupt. Despite the movie being over an hour and 40 minutes long, I was definitely left with a feeling of "wait, that's it?!".

Other problems I had with this movie were more minor. For one, the dubbing's not great. There were a few times where a character's mouth didn't match their voice and it was EXTREMELY visible. The other problem I have is the historical inaccuracy. I get that movies can take creative liberties with these kinds of stories, but come on...major plot points in this movie are things that never even happened in real life. I looked into P.T. Barnum's actual life, and it's so much more interesting and complex than what this movie offers (and he was also a horrible person, something only barely touched on in the movie). Finally (and this is the most minor problem of all), one of the protesters in the middle of the movie was such a horrible actor that it was actually hilarious, even moreso because of this movie's otherwise strong performances.

All of the aforementioned problems aside, though, I did like this movie. The visuals were AMAZING, the performances were very good, the songs were catchy, and watching it was a solid experience. It has a nice (if not overdone) message about embracing diversity and overcoming obstacles. You'll leave feeling better than when you came in. Overall, I don't think The Greatest Showman comes anywhere close to being a 10/10 movie, but I DO think the movie is better than critics are giving it credit for. That said, it's not anywhere near as good as most moviegoers say it is, at least in my opinion. It's a lighthearted, enjoyable, family-friendly experience, but it's no cinematic masterpiece. If you're into musicals and "feel good" movies, I would absolutely recommend this. If you aren't, I'd say to skip this one.

Very fun movie
13 July 2019
Just watched this with some friends. It's not a good movie by any stretch, but I was thoroughly entertained. The plot is really stupid and nonsensical, but the movie still keeps you engaged and leaves you wondering what will happen next. The clown costumes are also surprisingly decent, especially for a B-movie like this one. They really hit "uncanny valley" territory. All of that said, this movie is not scary at all (which is good for me because I can't handle horror movies, but it'll be bad for you if a truly scary movie is what you're looking for). If you're trying to ease into horror films with something creepy and slightly disturbing without being complete nightmare fuel, this is a good place to start. It's a fun movie to watch, especially if you're with friends like I was.

My Mom's Letter from Heaven (2019 TV Movie)

Perfectly average "feel good" movie
2 June 2019
I was in a hotel a while ago and this happened to be on, so I was just like "why not" and decided to watch it. This movie isn't bad (especially not for a Lifetime movie), but it's not good either. It's the most predictable movie I've ever seen; from around the halfway point, you can pretty much guess how the entire rest of the movie will play out. It's a super cheesy "feel good" type of movie, but at the very least it's watchable. If you're into those kinds of movies, I'd recommend this.

Songland (I) (2019–2020)
9/10
Amazing premise
2 June 2019
Honestly, I don't think Songland will do very well at all, but it's a great concept for a show! Shows like American Idol, The Voice, America's Got Talent, etc. always get flak for being too overproduced, exploiting some of their acts, and even accusations of fixed results. However, this show is extremely laid back and just shows the process of aspiring songwriters trying to make the next big hit. Nothing more to it than that. I'm not one of those people whose whole life revolves around music (and I DEFINITELY don't write songs), but even I was interested in seeing the process of how hit songs are written and edited until they're just right. If you want to be a songwriter or are just a fan of music in general, this is absolutely the show for you. That said, I think people that aren't super musical should also give this a watch. It's a lot more intriguing than you'd expect.

Doesn't do the book justice.
2 June 2019
Warning: Spoilers
As someone who read and really enjoyed the book this movie's based off of growing up, I don't like this movie very much. It took a book that's surprisingly dark for its age group and completely removed a lot of the more serious parts that made it stand out. For example, in the book, the character Carl (Bear) was an emotionally and even physically abusive stepfather that made Rafe's home life miserable throughout the whole book, until he shoves Rafe's mother and is kicked out of the house. In the movie, though? He's just an idiot that's obsessed with his car. Not much more to his character than that.

Really, though, my biggest problem with this movie is how unrealistic it is. In the book, Rafe (the main character) went to what was essentially a normal school and created his own problems by trying to break every rule in the book. The movie uses the same premise of breaking every rule, but this time it's because the school has rules that are extremely pointless and restrictive. The problem with this is that there's no way the principal should be able to get away with everything he does. No clubs? No bathroom breaks? Not one kid is going home to complain to their parents about that? No one's going to the school board?

The movie's overall message is that kids should be able to think freely and express themselves, but the school is hindering that with all of their rules. This would be completely fine if not for the fact that the movie is extremely in-your-face about it the whole time. There's a point where the vice principal literally says "teach to the test, not to the kids". It's ruined even more by the fact that, like I mentioned before, these rules are so overly restrictive and unrealistic that any person would be against them.

There are other, more minor problems I had that ruined the "realistic fiction" aspect of the movie for me:
  • Why is the principal allowed to just destroy Rafe's property? (Sketchbook scene)
  • During the colorful water sprinkler scene, I have a VERY hard time believing that it would break out into a dance party. I feel like a more natural reaction would be people being annoyed that their clothes and hair are getting wet, but not even one person seemed to care. I get that it's supposed to be symbolic of creativity and all that, but still...
  • The ending. Aren't these characters supposed to be 6th graders? Why are they kissing???

Overall, this movie might have been okay to me if it stood on its own, but it basically mangled the plot of a perfectly good book. For that, I'm not a fan of it.

Ehhhhhhh
2 June 2019
Points for effort, I guess, but this isn't a very good movie. The plot makes no sense, and the main character is unrealistically stupid. That said, the premise of this movie is...interesting, I guess, and it does keep you somewhat interested in what will happen. However, the setup does not pay off because the way the movie ends is extremely anticlimactic and raises more questions than it answers. It's a really weird experience. I guess there's an audience for this movie, but that audience doesn't include me. Not a fan of this one.

Probably the worst movie I've ever seen
2 June 2019
I'm serious. On an objective level, this might be the worst movie I've ever seen. Literally nothing happens between the beginning and the end. Nothing is lost and nothing is gained. Everything is the same at the end as at the beginning. And for a comedy movie, there's only one funny joke in the entire hour and 40 minute long film. ONE. This is just a really painful movie to watch all around.

Why
2 June 2019
Just got done watching the unrated version of this with some friends and I must say, this is the only movie I've ever seen where watching it genuinely made me feel like a worse person. This movie is so gross and disturbing that it eventually stops being funny and just becomes...well, gross and disturbing. There was no plot until an hour and 25 minutes through the 2 hour film. Admittedly, this movie does have SOME good writing snuck in (especially foreshadowing) but overall it's just disgusting and not much else. Unless you're REALLY into gore and grossout humor, I wouldn't recommend this movie at all.
