The Clay Bird (2002)
Too many characters and too little story.
13 October 2003
I was very disappointed with The Clay Bird.

I found that the story chopped and changed from one character to another all to frequently, failing to stay long enough on one part of the story for you to really care what was happening.

Yes, some of it was beautifully shot, but I have said this before with other films, is it possible to not to have glorious scenery in a place as georgraphically beautiful as Bangladesh?

I would rather the story concentrated on 2 or perhaps 3 of the characters, giving a far more detailed account of life in this traumatic part of Bangladesh's history.

Broken Wings (2002)
More like this would be very welcome!
16 July 2003
I see a lot of foreign language films but up until last night I had never seen an Israeli movie, probably due to poor distribution of these kind of films in the UK.

I thought Broken Wings was quite brilliant. Really quite moving and it leaves you with an enormous feeling of hope for this rather disfunctional family.

When I read a couple of reviews of this film I was expecting a fairly miserable ride, but it is full of humour which keeps it from sinking into absolute despair.

I would recommend this film to anyone, it's a shame more people don't get the opportunity to see this type of film.

It gets 8 out of 10, and I will be keeping an eye out for more of Nir Bergman's work in the future.

Pretty good, but not brilliant - but I have just one question...
7 July 2003
I saw this film 3 days ago and it hasn't really stayed with me. It was perhaps "worthy" more than anything.

My main point is that most reviewers mention is the "stunning cinematography", and whilst I agree with that to a point, I would like to ask if anyone has ever made a film in Kenya that had crap cinematography?

I stand to be shot down here, but is it actually possible to not make glorious cinematic use of one the most beautiful places on the planet?

Does exactly what it says on the tin!
3 April 2003
I'm no lover of "chick flix" (or other such derogatory terms) but How To Lose A Guy In 10 Days is an enjoyable enough film and does exactly what it promises.

As with most romantic comedies you know exactly how it's going to end but you watch it just to see how they eventually get there. And yes in this case the journey was just about worth it.

Kate Hudson illuminates the screen every time she is on it and seemed to have a a genuine chemistry with Mr Bongo player himself, Matthew McConaughey.

I went to see this on a freebie preview thing and must have been the only single guy in the theatre, I was a times deafened by the giggly women who seemed to find it far funnier than I could possibly imagine.

Not a great film, but not nearly as horrible as it could have been.

Oh, it's good to hear the Gin Blossoms on the soundtrack as well, top band they are!

Equilibrium (2002)
That bad it's good!
27 March 2003
After the first 15 minutes I was on the verge of walking out of this mess of a movie, it really was bad, but I decided to stay and watch how bad the script could get. I wasn't disappointed as it got far worse! I think the plot was was so far fetched that you just have to let the ridiculousness of it all just wash over you. This film just so badly wanted to be the Matrix, the costume design was almost identical to Neo. The only saving grace for this film were the special effects which at times were quite breathtaking. Films like this don't come along too often, but it really was that bad that it was good. I certainly left the cinema with a smile on my face.

Funny to the point of tears!

******PLOT SPOLIERS!!!*******

Went to see this last night and although it was meant to be a serious death row drama it turned out to be the best comedy I have seen for ages.

During the last 10 minutes I had tears of laughter running down my face, I really wanted to have a great big belly laugh but for the other people in the cinema I decided against it.

It's quite bizarre really as a film with some good acting performances in particular from Kevin Spacey, Laura Linney and Rhona Mitra could be so bad. Kate Winslet hams it up as the ridiculously named Bitsey Bloom.

Any serious point that the film was trying to make is simply washed away in an utterly stupid plot twist.

I would like to know when our Kate is clearly speeding into town at maybe 60 or 70 mph to stop the execution and her cars engine begins to bellow smoke, she decides to put her foot on the brakes stopping the car with a skid and proceeds to run into the town centre when in fact she could have just free wheeled the damn car at a pace far faster than Ms Winslet could ever run.

Maybe I am just being picky, but this is a dreadfully awful film which should be avoided at all costs unless you fancy a right good giggle fit!

Dreadful.
24 February 2003
Take Care of My Cat follows the lives of a group of girls who have recently left school in South Korea and are searching for a meaning or a purpose in their life.

To say this film was dreadful is a compliment, as it was worse than dreadful. I am not a new comer to far eastern films and I must admit I really was looking forward to seeing this film, which I had read only good things about. This movie felt like 9 hours long and it went nowhere.

The only interesting areas of the film were the parts with the girls sending text messages and the text appeared in windows etc. Some of the split screen stuff worked well too, but ultimately the plot went nowhere. Sure I am interested in cultures from the other side of the world but at least attach a story to it.

It could have been aptly titled "Take Care of My Plot", as the scriptwriter clearly didn't.

Not recommended at all. 2 out of 10 and that is just for the clever graphics.

Our Father (2002)

Our Father, who art made the middle section too long!
3 February 2003
For a film with a relatively short 84 minute running time Abouna (Our Father) felt like an eternity.

It follows the (mis)fortunes of 2 young boys after the disappearance of their father, whom I assume had gone accross the Chadian(?) border to look for work abroad.

The direction is pretty good and features some beautifully constructed shots of the Chadian landscapes. The beginning and the end are well paced but the whole middle section of the film drags on forever. Special mention goes to the young girl who plays the deaf mute, she was fantastic.

Still, it is worth going to see even if it's just to drag you out of the multiplex and into your local art-house!

The Lion King (1994)
I avoided this for 9 years, until tonight...
7 January 2003
Right then. First things first. I do not like kids films, and generally avoid anything bearing the Walt Disney logo.

However having never had the IMAX experience and hearing from a few of my mates that The Lion King is actually a pretty good film, I had myself a trip to the IMAX theatre in Durham, and I have to say I thought the whole thing was fantastic.

Of course old skool animation looks a little dated with all these modern Toy Story and Shrek efforts done on computers these days, but the characters were brought to life by a quite fantastic casting of splendid voices. The whole landscape is right in your face in an IMAX theatre, you can almost feel a part of the jungle.

I still don't think I will be queueing up to see Disney's next multi-million dollar kids flick (and no doubt a multi-million dollar tie-in with a burger chain) but more than anything I do think it is a massive achievment on my part, having managed to avoid The Lion King for 9 years, and in a sad soppy kind of way, I almost regret that! (but I didn't cry when Simba's dad got trampled, not that I would admit to that here though, you'd think I'd gone soft, you 'orrible lot!!!).

8 Women (2002)
You wont ever see anything quite like this!
3 December 2002
What a bizarre piece of film making!

Take some of the finest French actresses and put them in an Agatha Christie/Cluedo type environment, then turn it into a musical?! You bet!

It's a really strange one this. As the plot unfolds and all the dark secrets and twisted intentions are revealed it starts to make sense, although at times I did wonder how it was going to end.

I am always open to new ideas in movies and this was indeed very different. Some of the songs were perhaps a little silly, but it still made me smile.

The costume design is fantastic and it has so much fantastic colour in it.

I would give this 10 out 10 for originality, but overall it gets 7 out of 10. I guarantee you wont see anything quite like this for a long time.

A stunning work of art.
27 November 2002
I am not familiar at all with the work of this director at all so I was unsure what to expect from this movie when seeing it as part of the Regus London Film Festival on tour.

I needn't have worried. This film is very touching and in many places laugh out loud funny. The scene where the dog is introduced is just side-splitting.

The humour is so dry and it is very hard to compare this film with many other films, but for some reason it reminded me a little of Jean-Pierre Jeunet's Delicatessen, especially some of the colours in the set design.

I understand this film is the second part of a trilogy? I simply have to see more stuff from this guy, I feel like I have missed out in a big, big way!

If you get the chance, don't hesitate to see this film, it is simply a work of art. I for one will be going to see it again when it goes on general release next year.

No Meester Bond, I expect you to die.
21 November 2002
Went to see this last night and quite enjoyed it until the last half hour.

It seems the story was puffed out with some hideous one liner pay offs. In the last 30 minutes of this film there is very little said other than the one line double entendres that I suppose we have all come to expect from Bond, but it really went into overdrive.

For a film with such a massive budget I was disapointed with some of the special effects. They looked as if they had run out of money on a few of the big money shots, at times it made xXx avalance sequence look good!

On the whole, maybe I expected too much from Die Another Day, I probably have started to believe the James Bond hype machine which has been in full swing in the UK for the last month or so. It wasn't any worse than any other Bond film, it's just that I expected more.

It scores 6 out of 10 on the Meej-Movie-Ometer! Look out Meester Bond, Xander Cage is gonna get ya!

How great might Jean Vigo have been?
13 November 2002
L'Atalante is a wonderful piece of work from Jean Vigo, I believe he died before this film was released.

Judging from this movie, it makes you wonder what kind of influence he would have had on the world of cinema had he lived.

It's a fine love story mixed with a lot of humour. It is splendidly directed and the actors are just fantastic. I assume they had some sort of cat trainer on the set at all times!

I would recommend this very highly - just watch it and see how many ideas are still used in films today.

Zero for Conduct, Ten for Greatness!
13 November 2002
I saw this film on a double bill tonight with Jean Vigo's L'Atalante. I love French movies but until now I had seen nothing from this long ago.

It seems to be one hilarious set piece after another, I say hilarious and I really mean that. The children are wonderful but the teachers are all there to be made fun of in any manner of ways. I must say the Head master is brilliant.

Whilst this is only about 40 minutes or so long, it is a fine introduction to the Jean Vigo's full length feature film, L'Atalante.

If you love cinema, you will love Zero for Conduct.

Should have been longer
10 November 2002
I saw this film a couple of days ago and whilst I enjoyed it, the cinematography in particular, I felt that Phillip Noyce wasted an opportunity to make a far more epic picture.

I wondered before I went to see it how a 1200 mile journey could be squeezed in to such a short film. I felt as if they didn't focus enough on the struggle of the girls as they followed the fence north, back to their homeland.

It's not very often I want a film to be longer but I think Rabbit Proof Fence should have been at least an hour more in duration so we could have had detail on how the girls survived (it seemed to me as if they walked the 1200 miles eating 3 bread buns, a birds egg and a mouthful of water).

Overall it was a beautifully filmed piece of work which could have been so much better if more depth had been given to the story.

Simply stunning.
6 November 2002
I see alot of movies at the cinema (103 so far this year) and I have to say that this is by far and away the best film I have seen this year, even though it was released back in 1954!

I sat in awe and watched this work of genius and felt quite ashamed that I had never even heard of it before my local art house cinema decided to show it for a week on what looked like a new print.

The best part of the whole movie has to be the 28 minute break in where there is no speech and no music, merely the sound of the men carrying out the heist. Pure quality.

Although really dark in places it is lightened with the dry humour.

Not many films score 10 out of 10 but this does and also gets a gold star for effort!!

If you ever get a chance to see this movie, please do not hesitate, it's a classic.

The Eye (2002)

Gave me goose bumps for the first time this year.
4 November 2002
Warning: Spoilers
************POSSIBLE PLOT SPOILERS AHOY!!!!*****************

"The Eye" was the first film this year to really give me the goose bumps.

The scares are played to maximum effect in this Pang brothers film, although it does take a borrow a few of it's ideas from other more famous Hollywood fare. I am thinking here of the basic plot of "Sixth Sense" as a main influence. The way that the Mun (?) eventually tries to come to terms with her gift. And then her sitting in the traffic after an accident has occured was like the scene near the end of M Night Shyamalans movie where Haley Joel Osment tells his mom about seeing her mother.

Also the in the way that the ghostly black shapes move in before and after a death is quite similar to "Ghost" (actually that was probably the scariest thing in Ghost!).

Also a film not many folk may be familiar with which had similarities was the Michael Apted thriller "Blink" from 1994, where Madeline Stowe plays a woman who sees things after getting her sight back after years of being blind.

I liked this film alot although the plot did meander a little towards the end. The flash backs to the dead girls life (and subsequent death) reminded me of the flash backs in the original Japanese version of "Ring" which is never a bad thing.

This is more scary than anything that Hollywood will produce this year, although I'm yet to see the US version of "Ring". Catch this movie if you like to be hiding behing your hands!!

It scores 8 out of 10 on the Meejoir-Movie-Ometer.

John Sayles movies are on a different level to any other film maker
31 October 2002
Saw this movie last night and whilst there are no car chases, explosions or murders to solve there is still plenty to keep your mind occupied for the two and half hour duration.

I can't think of any other director who manages to make films like this. Having seen Limbo a couple of years back I kind of knew what to expect with this movie, fine actors, lots of quality dialogue, splendid direction and various engrossing plots - and I wasn't disappointed.

My only problem with Sunshine State is that there were maybe just too many characters to follow. Perhaps if Sayles had concentrated more on just a couple of stories instead of multiple plot strands it may have presented a more in depth look at some great tales that were boiling under the surface.

That said, I really enjoyed this movie and would recommend it to anybody who wants a change from the usual 90 minute popcorn-fest. Please watch it, it will make you think about things long after it's finished.

Repulsion (1965)
9/10
It's still class now, it must have been ground-breaking in 1965!
29 October 2002
Warning: Spoilers
SLIGHT PLOT SPOILERS AHOY!!!!

I have just returned from seeing this movie for the first time at one one my local cinemas "directors chair" evenings, and can honestly say I was shocked at how good this film actually was.

I am sometimes put off with films that are labelled "classics" and more often than not they are very average films and look incredibly dated, (Peeping Tom springs to mind here), Repulsion on the other hand was not either of these.

The direction would not have been out of place in a current film, all of the shots were extremely well constructed and the acting was simply superb. Deneuve was simply stunning to say the least.

I can't remember a film of that age showing so much violence. The nervous breakdown of Carol was simply horrifying.

Many comments have been made on IMDb with reference to Carol's rape fantasies, I interpreted these scenes as flash backs to an incestuous relationship with her father, surely this is the whole point of the photograph with her staring at her father with a look of hatred?

This film is still awesome now, it must have been truly ground breaking back in the mid-sixties.

Robin Williams gives me the creeps! (that's a good thing!)
10 October 2002
Wow, I never thought Robin Williams would or even could do a role like this. He made my skin crawl, his character was so believeable. He played Sy, the lonely camera guy to absolute perfection.

It seems as if Mr Williams has been on every TV show and radio program this past week in the UK to promote this film and I think alot of people would have been pleasantly suprised by his recent departures from comedy roles into something a little more serious. I don't know if he'll be nominated for an Oscar next year as it's still early days but I think on this performance he should definatley be considered.

Recommended. 8 out 10.

Scary As Hell (small plot spoilers ahoy)
9 October 2002
Warning: Spoilers
This is easily the scariest movie of the year. No big name stars, relatively un-heard of director all seemingly based in the Big Brother style house!

I loved the wierd camera angles, it felt like you were actually watching a live web-cast. The night time scenes where everything appears in a green light was extremely creepy, especially when the camera picks up the glare of the eyes. They walk round the house in the dark looking like zombies.

Others have commented on the sound in this film being awful. I totally disagree. The sound was what made the scary bits even scarier, I must admit I jumped out my seat a few times early on.

Sure it perhaps dis-integrates into a slasher movie in the last 15 minutes or so but it is still really frightening. There haven't been many films like this, alot of people have said it's perhaps a little like Blair Witch in it's camera style and sound effects, but it's is way scarier than that.

If you like being on the edge of your seat and generally scared sh*tless, go see this movie, you will not be disappointed.

Red Dragon (2002)

Ye of little faith!
7 October 2002
Up until now Manhunter was my favourite Hannibal movie. Sure I thought Silence of the Lambs was great too, but Manhunter was where it all began and I have always loved it. To say I was dubious about going to see a virual re-make of it is a bit of an understatement especially from the man who brought us the Rush Hour films. However I needn't have worried.

Red Dragon is a splendid spin on the Thomas Harris novel. Sure it has Hopkins back in the saddle as Lector, but this is a fantastic ensemble piece with Ralph Fiennes taking pride of place. Ed Norton (who rarely has a bad performance) is also on top form.

The gore is better, the suspense is nail biting and thank God that Tangerine Dream didn't do the soundtrack!

Go see this movie, it makes up for Ridley Scotts poor attempt a couple of years ago.

I knew nothing about skate boards before I went to see this...
12 September 2002
I have never seen my local arthouse cinema filled with teenage kids wearing baggy jeans, hooded tops and vans sneakers until tonight! Documentary films rarely attract a big audience but tonight was different.

I knew absolutely nothing about skateboarding before I went to see this although I had heard of the Zephyr team from my distant past.

Most of my childhood was spent on bmx bikes (early 80's) and we had similar experiences looking for places to ride (jumping fences to local factories as they had a big hill to get "rad" on, and using old doors and barrels to make huge ramps).

I just loved the innocence of the whole skateboarding thing portayed in this documentary. It's a pity there are no outdoor swimming pools anywhere in the north east of England as I'm sure we would have been doing the same thing as these loons!

The soundtrack to this movie has got to be the best I have ever heard, it sounded so contemporary even though the tunes are over 25 years old. Sabbath, Ted Nugent, Alice Cooper, Hendrix and T-Rex all sounded as fresh as if it was Limp Bizkit, Korn or Slipknot.

I would recommend this movie to anyone, even if you have no interest at at all in skateboarding, it's a life affirming 90 minutes.

Shane Meadows - Britains Best!
5 September 2002
I had the great pleasure of seeing this film in the company of Shane Meadows and Rhys Ifans last night at Newcastle's Tyneside Cinema.

I have to admit it was an excellent film, a gritty kitchen sink tale crossed with so many cliches from classic westerns. Looks like Shane Meadows managed to rope in a whole load of top British actors into this project (Vic and Bob even get in on the action!).

The attention to detail is tremendous. The scene with Ricky Tomlinson sitting on the toilet writing songs is hilarious, especially with crates of Pot Noodles surrounding him!

I still think that Twentyfourseven is Meadows best film yet but with a cast like this, it will hopefully bring him to the attention of the masses and bring him the success that he whole heartedly deserves.

Murder to watch. But Sandra, I still love you!
17 July 2002
This is exactly what Hollywood does badly. Very Badly. Typically awful who-dunnit featuring more bluffs and double bluffs than you could shake a stick at. This movie is up there with horrendous plotless rambles like Copycat, Along Came A Spider and even Kiss the Girls. Horrendous in that it is possible to work out just about every plot detail in the first 25 minutes. The constant "twists" and "surprises" are tedious to say the least.

Don't get me wrong I like Sandra Bullock but when is she going to get a role that truly makes her shine. She seems to manage to choose the wrong movies time after time. I think she should maybe look to more comedy roles as I feel some of her best parts have been in films like Demolision Man and even last years Miss Congeniality wasn't too bad (ok it was was that bad but not as bad as Murder By Numbers).

Michael Pitt on the other hand is awesome. I saw him in Bully not so long ago in which he was fantastic and also last years Hedwig and the Angry Inch. He does evil particularly well. I think he could be destined for very great things.

And what the hell is Chris Penn doing in this tripe?! Nice guy Eddie is far better than this!

It was worth going to see this movie just for the guys walking around in the Slipknot costumes whenever they were going to murder someone.

On the whole this film was very poor, it scores only a ** out of ***** on the Meejoir-meter. But if Sandra Bullock is reading this, I still love you!
