Truly amazing if you haven't seen the animated series
3 April 2011
I must tell you that I haven't read any of the "airbender" books or seen the cartoon series so I didn't really know what to expect out of this one. But boy-o-boy this was super awesome in that sense.

I read few reviews before watching this one and they were mostly negative just because everyone compared it to the cartoon series which I am assuming was super awesome. But then, if a film is being adapted from a series you cant just expect every detail to be there. So in that sense it was good enough. But yeah, being a fan of some nice vfx stuff this was super fantastic.

What it lacked was some nice actors, script and maybe few dialogues. Except for Dev Patel, who has done a fantastic job all other actors seem to be just reading the lines off the script without any punch. The love chemistry between Sokka and Yue (who by the way looks gorgeous in the movie :D ) doesn't really seem like chemistry. And even though I haven't seen any of the cartoon series but I could still make out that they were kinda rushing the movie. If Shyamalan was really spending so much why not make it a little longer and kinda establish everything.

But anyways the awesome visual elements make up for most of it. In fact that was the only thing that kept me glued to the screen. Really brilliant action and nicely choreographed and done.

No matter what, when it ended, and the fire lord appointed his daughter to capture Avatar, i really wanted to see it go on with Avatar learning to control the other natural elements. But i guess with all those negative reviews, there isn't going to be a second part, at least not anytime soon as they don't yet have any plans at all.

So i guess, the acting was the only part where the movie couldn't score and little bit on the script but overall a really fantastic piece, at least for those who haven't seen the cartoon series.

Watchable

Another Bhatt movie starring Emraan. Of course there isn't much to expect but I really like watching Hashmi's movies for: a. The songs - almost all songs from all his films have been a hit and so is the same for this movie. "Tujhko jo paaya", "kya", "Challya" all are amazing.

b. Emraan's love chemistry with the beautiful female leads - They are always beautiful and mostly new comers but Emraan's on screen chemistry and the sweet love is always worth a watch.

The film is based on racism and the recent attacks on Indian students in Australia but then its not a very serious "particular issue" based film, its more of a the typical bollywood masala with its share of romance, action, comedy. And because of that some elements are deliberately added which looks totally nonsense like, here, the Sardars living in Australia just to make it comical.

But in the end everything adds up to make a decent movie. All his movies have been a little different and something which is not often seen, yet they are never really powerful. Same goes with "Crook" but the songs and the overall look makes it worth watching once.

An action blockbuster with the spirit of Buddhism
31 March 2011
Warning: Spoilers
Being a huge fan of Hong Kong and Chinese visual effects, I really wanted to see this one and also for Jackie Chan, although he didn't have a huge role to play in this one. Also action direction coming from veterans Cory Yuen, with Yuen Tak and Li Chung Chi, its definitely something not to be missed Benny Chan's films may not have been the best in the recent past but with Shaolin he definitely delivers a blockbuster. A movie which is not only high on action but also rich in the spirit of Buddhism.

The main protagonist Hou Jie (Andy Lau), a ruthless warlord who bear grudges with Shaolin Temple and sets to get rid of the people around him for his own benefits, is betrayed by his own brother and repents from the mistakes he made which leads to the death of his daughter. The cook (Chan) at the temple takes him into refuge where Hou decides to become a monk at the Shaolin which is where the Buddhist teachings come in to play. Disciples in Shaolin who bear grudges with Hou for his deeds in the past eventually accept him and in the climax war they all defend Shaolin from the invasion of Tsao's army and the Western powers.

Jackie Chan's cameo in an amusing role as the cook provides some comic relief for the audience in an otherwise intense plot which doesn't last for long since it deviates from the main concern of the film. But there is one fight sequence with Chan.

But what I did miss was some beautiful landscape views, with its massive set pieces it was something that was expected. Also, apart from the main characters not much attention was paid to the co-stars. No female presence as such in an overall grand movie of all sorts.

In the end its definitely worth a look, but you'll somehow just wish it was better. The climax with its awesome fight sequence and huge sets being exploded is also worth the watch.

worth watching for Dwayne
13 March 2011
It was absolutely lovely and awesome to watch Dwayne Johnson back in action after doing a few crap movies. My expectations were really high with this one and he stands up to it for most of the film.

The plot is not a very complex one. Its a simple revenge thriller, action movie with a few twists (which I and I am sure those of you who are into such movies and are smart enough will also be able to pick it up) are not lame and you will definitely love them.

Its a high paced, high energy, low on CG visual effects movie and it does have some nice decent actions but not what I was expecting or was shown in the trailers. Its not the kind of ending I was looking for, but otherwise a good enough "The Rock" movie. And a plausible performance by other actor just makes it a complete Also its not just about killings or revenge. It has its emotional touch with both Dwayne and the killers of his brother shown to have some soul.

All in all, this is one good movie which is definitely worth a watch and money spent. A little more action would have made it perfect.

Megamind (2010)

Different and an entertaining super hero story
22 February 2011
Warning: Spoilers
As we all know Pixar and Dreamworks are two of the best studios producing amazingly awesome animated movies. There have been few misses but megamind is not one of those. With dreamworks releasing some fantastic and original movies in the recent past like kung fu panda and how to train your dragon I knew I had to see this one since it came out and I finally got time to watch it now.

Although it felt like one of the typical genre of super hero films, but with all those elements put together and a super brilliant character, MEGAMIND, who is a little flawed and evil, but is also lovable, earns our pity and "gets the girl in the end". It was smart, intelligent, witty and a well written story. The voice acting and animation were perfectly suited to the movie. I love how these studios pull such great emotions even with animated characters. When Roxanne leaves Megamind, you yourself will feel his pain which he shows with his eyes. I just love it..!!! This movie had some great around laughs and took a different spin at some conventional superhero movies and gave us a great surprise which I am sure you all would enjoy. This flick is for all ages. Right mixture of humour, seriousness and also a little suspense with a strong love interest will keep you laughing and entertained throughout the movie and the superb action and flying scenes which are very exciting, I feel, are made mostly for the "3d" experience but nonetheless its equally enjoyable in 2d. But 3d complemented the movie without being a distraction or annoyance. I guess it's everything I was looking for in a movie.

Also, the movie vividly captured many awkward and tragic human situations in a way only animation can. Like how society sometimes fails to accept a child who is different than his peers(because of his looks and intelligence) and just doesn't fit and he relates to them a bit awkwardly which in turn makes him feel alienated. In the movie MEGAMIND reasons that if he is treated like a bad kid, then he might as well be a bad kid, and thus takes place birth of an intelligent, genius criminal or as he says "SUPER-VILLIAN".

There's seriously nothing to complain about the movie except that I wanted it to go on for a little longer maybe.

Overall, a funny, exciting, entertaining and a really MEGA-AWESOME film that kids and parents, both, can enjoy and I would really like DREAMWORKS to keep going on with this and I am sure they will.

Enjoy…. ;)
