Great movie for the girls
29 April 2003
I LOVE this movie. It's touching, funny, sad, heartbreaking and inspiring all in one. I found Mary-Louise Parker's character so like myself that it was hilarious! Drew Barrymore, lovely as ever in her role, provided the much-needed sparkle to the movie. Some parts were a lot sadder and more sinister than others, but Drew was always there to bring the sunshine!

It's so touching, it makes me cry every time. But I love it. It's not perfect by any means, but it's definitely one to watch with the girls. Boys are on the side.

Funny, cute and uplifting
27 April 2003
I saw this because I'm a massive Henry Thomas fan. And I loved it, not only because he starred in it, but because it was honestly a good movie, in my opinion. The actors were perfect for their parts. Anthony LaPaglia was hilarious! The movie really shows how difficult and grating dating can sometimes be. It's a good portrayal of the human condition. I was soooo glad she got with the guy she ended up with. All in all, it's uplifting, funny, amazingly cute and basically a good time :)

Happy Face Murders (1999 TV Movie)

amusing thriller/black comedy
5 April 2002
I thoroughly enjoyed this film. It had my full attention throughout, which is sometimes difficult for a film to do. There were no dull parts, and it got more and more amusing as it went on! I'm not sure which category this film comes under. It is a thriller, but also a comedy, and a murder mystery. Either way, it was a good film.

The lovely Henry Thomas made a great appearance, although his character didn't seem necessary, he was good to watch as always. The little comedic moments between him and the character Jen were wonderful to watch. I would give this film a 7. Sure, it's not the best movie ever made, but it kept my attention, and that's got to be a good thing.

Not as good as the book
11 October 2001
I did like this movie, but I didn't think it was as good as the book. The first half was so much better than the last. It was interesting to see how the kids all came together, and you really felt for them.

It did drag in some parts, and the ending wasn't at all true to the book; a bit weak. I didn't find it scary; but I did find myself worrying for the characters.

I give it 6 out of 10.

Simon Birch (1998)

Heartwarming story of faith and friendship
2 October 2001
Although this film got quite bad reviews, I actually enjoyed it. There was never a dull moment as in some movies, and it was sad and uplifting all at the same time. Ian Michael Smith was utterly adorable as little Simon Birch, and Joseph Mazzello great as his best friend. There were some very funny bits; Simon Birch comes out with such witty and sarcastic lines it's hard not to laugh.

However, if like me you have read the book it was based upon (A Prayer for Owen Meany by John Irving) you will notice its short-comings in relation to the original story. For the sake of the movie, forget you read the book and judge the movie alone.

Dollar for the Dead (1998 TV Movie)
Quite slow
22 September 2001
I didn't really like this film. The gun fight scenes were cleverly done, and really rather amusing, but the film doesn't seem to get anywhere fast.

Emilio Estevez, much better in "Young Guns" 1 and 2, seems quite weak here, and although he is a talented actor, in this film he looks lost a lot of the time. It is an entertaining film to watch, but I wouldn't go out of my way to watch it again.

Interesting behind-the-scenes look at porn industry
21 September 2001
Although this film has an off-putting title, people may actually be quite surprised at the content. Yes, it is about the porn industry, but has other subjects and deeper meanings. The Mitchell brothers (Sheen and Estevez) are in business together as San Francisco's porn kings. Controversy follows as the general public do not approve of them. Apart from the frequent sex scenes at the beginning of the movie, this film escalates into a deeper subject of family feuds. You find that you don't particularly like the characters, but are still interested in what happens to them. It is a rather sad ending. The film, in it's directorial aspect, is very well done.

Although not the best film Estevez has directed, I was glad to have seen it.

Fun movie
21 September 2001
I actually really liked this movie. Wil Wheaton, still fresh from "Stand By Me" gives a good performance as the young Harry Houdini. The story is fun and interesting, and some parts quite funny. I'd recommend this for a lazy sunday afternoon.

Very cute, feel-good film
21 September 2001
I loved The Buddy System. Yes, it was very cheesy and completely predictable. But, if you like slushy romantic dramas, this one is for you. Richard Dreyfuss is brilliant as usual as the wannabe writer. Susan Sarandon plays the potential love interest, and the ever cute Wil Wheaton as her little son. The scene in which Timmy (Wheaton) explains to his mother (Sarandon) about the meaning of "The Buddy System" is like the core of the film - this is where you understand the whole meaning of it. A very cosy movie that leaves you believing there could be happy endings in real life, too.
