I thought this was sweet, easy to get into
22 April 2024
Maybe I was in the mood to watch a film about high school, maybe I'm having an existential crisis being in my thirties, but I really enjoyed this film and it had me tearing up at some of the sweet moments.

I watched 'She's all that' the previous night, clearly I'm in a teenage film type of mood and reminiscing about my teenage years, but that film is a classic. Is 'How to date Billy Walsh as good' as the classic teen films? No. Personally, I think the title is forgettable and we didn't get to know much about him except some obvious emotional moments. He's popular and he knows it, he doesn't shy away from it, but also he's not mean. But he knows people like him. I think there could have been more development of him...he was quite one dimensional.

But, what made me enjoy the film was the relationship between Charitha's Amelia, and Sebastian Croft's Archie. They were the heart of the film. And they're connection and chemistry was believable. It was very Dawson's Creek, but in reverse...instead of Joey being in love and not recognising the boy, it was Amelia who was oblivious.

As a fan of the Big Bang Theory, I loved seeing Kunal Nayyar play Amelia's dad. He gave a haunting performance as a widower who is trying to find love again. Whilst we didn't see much of his new relationship- it was more superficial - I enjoyed every scene that he was in, and his moments as a dad and with his friends. But I think he's a brilliant actor. Looking forward to see him in other stuff post Big Bang Theory.

Archie's parents were also good, if a little caricaturist. I wish I saw more of them and we got a moment where they had a heart to heart with their son. But alas, clearly a lot of moments were either edited away or not considered.

So this film was a solid 7/10. It could have been better with more character development. Perhaps it didn't meet the emotional drama of the Kissing Booth, but it did hit some of the Romantic notes, and I would watch this again on a rainy day.

Big Mood (2024– )
7/10
A moving show on the impact of mental health
3 April 2024
Warning: Spoilers
I just finished Big Mood and I was left in an emotional and pensive mood. I know people in my life who have been impacted by various forms of mental health, including Bipolar disorder and Schizophrenia. I felt the show to liched on this issue well- from the subtle to obvious examples of the experience (i.e delusions).

Dealing with a family member or friend who has Mental Health is never easy and if you are not medical expert, it's particularly difficult to separate whether a behaviour is their personality (i.e. They're unreliability, their mood swings) or whether it's a symptom or result of their diagnosis. The longer you realise the impact of mental health on their life, the more upsetting it is to see someone experience a manic episode or psychosis, but also it can be difficult for you to recognise when they have become unwell again. Big Mood beautifully dealt this challenging conflict, especially in the latter episodes.

I am a fan of Nicola Coughlan. She's one of my fave actresses today. Bridgerton (of course) made me become a fan, but her talent is what made me check out some of her other work from Derry Girls (which I loved) and now Big Mood. I knew she could do comedy because of DG, but Big Mood is not just a comedy, in fact, it would be reductive to class it as this. It's more of a drama with comical aspects, so a dramedy seems more fitting. The show takes you on a beautiful cycle that represents what someone who is suffering from a mental illness can go through. First we see the manic state, then the depression, then someone who is back on medication, then someone who has relapsed (due to wrongly applied dose of medication due to a doctor's failure to properly check a patient's record and/or to continue to monitor the impact of the medication..perhaps this is also works simultaneously as a negative commentary on the diar state of mental health services today).

Big Mood explores the friendship between Maggie (Nicola Coughlan), who has bipolar, and her friend Eddie (Lydia West). Lydia is always the strong friend who tries to help her friend whilst trying to save her bar and deal with her own personal issues.

Big Mood is timely because it highlights in a beautiful yet heartbreaking way that sometimes your friendship or help may not be enough to save a friend or assist when their mental health is seriously declining: 1) because you may not be aware and they may not tell you 2) the mental illness can be bigger or more challenging then you expect and perhaps all hands on deck will be needed (I.e. Medical help long term, fam and friends collectively assisting).

3) the big one: you have your own life and issues you need to focus on and give energy and sometimes you need support too.

I suppose it even makes one question how codependent best friend relationships can be and whether the relationship is healthy or truly serving you anymore. This is definitely true for both Eddie and Maggie.

Both characters were complex and interesting, although Nicola's Maggie had a lot more arcs to go through and demonstrated why she is at the top of her game right now (season 3 of Bridgerton can't come soon enough). I will definitely tune into what she does next (outside of Bridgerton which I will . Obviously be watching). I would also be interested to see what Lydia did next. She did a good job in this one but I wish she had more to do earlier on.

Well done Camila - a brilliant show that truly shows the challenges of dealing with mental health and the collateral damage it can have on family and friends. I hope season 2 will be coming, because I'll definitely tune in.

Irish Wish (2024)
7/10
A charming and enjoyable romcom
23 March 2024
I enjoyed this. It made me smile. It made me laugh. The locations were beautiful and definitely made me add Ireland to my travel list.

I have always loved Lindsay as an actress- I grew up when people like her and Hilary Duff were everywhere and I loved them both (no matter how cheesy or predictable their ventures/shows/films were). She could be in a show eating cheese (something that I'm allergic too) and I'd probably still find her project charming cause she's good at what she does. Happy this made number 1 on Netflix. Watched it the first day it came out in the UK. Bring on more Lindsay projects.

Lindsay is definitely the standout in this cast, as well as her true love interest. I have no problem with a romcom being predictable, and really not sure why it's such a problem for people. I want romcoms to be feel-good and predictable because life is complicated enough. Romcoms for me are like these warm hugs, cups of soup, blankets for can snuggle under. Indeed, for most romcoms you can predict the outcome in the trailer- that was the same with Bridget Jones and other great romcoms and it's the same thing with this. There are fun twists and turns in this film of course and it's fun to see how they get to the predictable conclusion, and on some level the Irish Wish reminded me a little of 13 going on 30 (another great romcom). I enjoyed the cast - they all did great jobs in their role and I left the film with a smile on my face. I'd also be happy to watch this again which is why I thought it was a good enough job and 7/10.

One Day (2024)
10/10
Superb show (and acting) that will take you on an emotional rollercoaster
11 February 2024
Wow - the story of One Day was finally adapted in a way that truly captured the spirit of the book, and in some ways excelled it. I read One Day after graduating many years ago, I was really touched by the story. The film was ok but didn't do the story justice for me. Who knew what I really wanted (and needed) was this limited series format.

This was beautifully done. It captured the spirit of love, life, heartbreak, the enuui and challenges of life. I watched this over 3 days, though if I didn't work full time - I would have binged it in one day. That being said - I think it's best to watch it in parts, because this show captures the different chapters of life and how they intertwine to make one's person's life so beautiful. I could imagine it would be even more intense if I watched it in one day.

Watching One Day reminded me that life can be heartbreaking, lovely, exciting, thrilling, scary, but most importantly wonderful and adventurous, especially if you are willing to take a risk when it comes to love. In the way Dexter and Emma finally meet on the penultimate day at the end of university, just before their graduation, and have a significant impact on each other's life indefinitely- loving each other throughout the years as friends, both near and from afar, weaving through the different chapters of life and growing up and trying to figure out life and the purpose of it.... As well as finding one's function (in layman's term: work that suits you), I think we all know that love is the most important thing that gives our lives meaning - and that love comes in so many forms - whether it's familial, romantic, friendship.

There are so many moments that touched me when watching this show. I have been on an emotional rollercoaster and have the empty boxes of tissue as proof! The acting from the main leads who portrayed Emma and Dexter was superb, and the supporting cast were fantastic too - a special shout out to the actors who played Dexter's mum and dad, Tilly, Ian, and Sylvie. Truly, the whole cast was superb and the show captured significant moments of life through the lens of one day - because really, everything in all of our lives happens in one day, as all we ever have is today, some days can be monotonous and some can be significant in a positive or negative way.

The show will take you on an existential journey - it's definitely taken me on one. I will also be fishing out my book to read (or purchasing it again if I have lost my copy). Thank you for this gem of a show...I will definitely rewatch again, but only when I am ready to get back on the emotional rollercoaster.

Oppenheimer (I) (2023)
6/10
Not Nolan's best work, but one to watch at least once
11 August 2023
Warning: Spoilers
What was good?

Cillian Murphy - hands down his performance was brilliant and he would be a strong contender for the Oscar, subject to whatever else comes out. There are too many moments to highlight, but ultimately I think he nailed all the moments, as well as the complexities of what he was creating, and the impact it had.

Emily Blunt - phenomenal performance - I loved every scene she was in (except the one with Florence Pugh), but she was brilliant. That scene when she didn't shake that scientist's hand at the end- I laughed out loud. Every women would not forget that. That scene where she was being "cross examined" (although that was not a court and was an utterly unfair process) was also amazing, I hope she gets recognized for her work. Supporting Actress Oscar for sure.

Matt Damon - a solid performance even though his character was morally questionable - I enjoyed watching his scenes. In fact, side note - recently watched him in Air, and he was brilliant in that too, and I forgot how much I enjoy his work.

The bad?

You create a film about the atomic bomb and you don't show the actual effect either through flashes of newspaper clips or news stories?! I mean what the hell was that? I was researching on my phone whilst in the cinema to remind myself of the history. I.e. Japan attacked Pearl harbor, and USA retaliated in the worst way with the atomic bomb killing hundreds of thousands of people in two Japanese cities. I remember being in school and history lessons learning of the after effect. So, from a philosophical and morality perspective this was a really weak part of the film. The moral questions only came up briefly in certain ways such as through Oppenheimer's hearing to see if he should have his security clearance. Of course, the moral repercussions of what Oppenheimer and his team did in the Manhattan project was only explored through Oppenheimer after he considered the mass deaths of innocent lives - but even then, it was only in his mind and there were no visual images shown. I think it would have been better to show the reality of what happened to make us the viewers make our own moral judgments about him too. How can scientists create something and not consider the impact or the potential use of that item by the government - i.e. The atomic bomb. This for me was the weakest part of the film. Whilst Oppenheimer tried to do this later, if we saw the truth of the destruction juxtaposed with the remorse he clearly felt and the actions he then took towards trying to stop the hydrogen bomb being created, then maybe I would have found the film more interesting.

Finally, Florence Pugh's character was totally not necessary or relevant to the story and I would have preferred if she was cut out completely and nothing would have been lost. Again, it would have been more fitting to explore the humanity and the concepts of good and bad within Oppenheimer in relation to the bomb he created. Further, the nudity was completely unnecessary and not integral to the story at all. I found O's story with his wife much more fascinating - a realistic exploration of being married through the good, the bad and the ugly. I mean we knew nothing about FP's character other than seeing her nude, and her not liking his flowers, and being incredibly needy. So not a great role for her at all and would not have been missed.

There were some other strong supporting cast, but to be honest, there were so many men in the film that their names were lost on me. But Rami Malek was used in a key scene, and I thought he did a good job, as did the aid to Robert DJ - who was happy when he got his comeuppances.

Whilst Robert D J was ok, there was too much of him, and the film could have been edited down and less of him would have been good.

The Little Mermaid (I) (2023)
9/10
Brilliant adaptation of a classic
4 June 2023
All the performances were great - in particular, Halle Bailey, Melissa McCarthy, Daveed Diggs, Javier Bardem. I watched this with my family, and we all enjoyed it. It was well acted and a delight to watch.

I had recently watched the animated version of the Little mermaid at the end of last year, and I felt like ll the key tension points were in this film. Melissa made a particular fun baddy to watch, and she was definitely a sinister Ursula. Halle was an adventurous and brave Ariel - I also loved her physical acting when she had no voice. She portrayed the innocence and interest of someone learning new things really well. I thought the chemistry between her and the love lead (Jonah Hauer-King) was refreshing - it was like a best friend type of love, where they understand each other and have similar curiosities.

Daveed's Sebastian kept the humor coming, and he had me cracking up throughout this film. All in all a great adaptation.

If I had one criticism, I would have preferred to see more of Ariel's interactions with her sisters/siblings. To see how she was different or similar to them.

As an adult, I enjoyed this.

Brilliant and heartfelt - please bring more seasons of Queen Charlotte
5 May 2023
Queen Charlotte has made me laugh, it's pulled my emotional strings and made me cry, and it has shocked me. So all I can say is thank you Shondaland and Julia Quinn for widening the Bridgerton world with this iteration- a brilliant prequel to the Bridgerton shows.

I don't want to give spoilers, but it did not disappoint. If it wasn't for my busy work schedule, I would have watched in 1 day, but I had to fit in during lunch and finished it the evening after it dropped. What a great love story Queen Charlotte is - to love someone through so much uncertainty and challenges, talk abiut love and strength. I love all of the young actresses and young King George - to see who they were before they became the three wonderful queens they are, and to meet Young King George. I hope we get another season because I want to see them all - see young violet fall in love with Edmund, see Lady Danbury truly emerge as a fierce queen in a man's world, and see Queen Charlotte continue to show her strength and natural Queen ways as she reigns.

I have always been a huge fan of the original Queen Charlotte, Lady Danbury and the Dowager Violet Bridgerton- they're all just brilliant in Bridgerton season 1 and 2, have some of my favourite lines from the show, and they delivered as equally in Queen Charlotte. If I could grow older and be a queen and boss like any of them; I'd be happy. I loved QC , and in keeping with my Bridgerton watching style, I'll be rewatching it a few times just to take it all in. Further, I'll also rewatch all of the previous Bridgerton seasons because I cannot get enough of this world!

Also, my favourite metaphor that I will take away and use is: I miss my garden being in bloom...if that's not the best metaphor I've heard in a while...I don't know what is. But, I think once one is of age, we all want our individual garden to be in bloom once in a while from the right person of course ;-).

How I Met Your Father (2022–2023)
7/10
This show has really grown on me so give it a chance
26 February 2023
Yes, I thought the pilot episode was really cheesy, like incredibly cheesy, but as it's H Duff, and a few other people I remember from other things. But the cheese in the first couple of epsisodes and how they all got thrown together was too cheesy. That being said, I made it pass the first few episodes and started to really enjoy this. I never watched or got into how I met your mother, and I think that helps because I was able to give this a fresh start.

Even though HIMYM was not my show, I knew who Robin was when she appeared in the last episode of season 1, and I thought that was a special moment. I still think it's cheesy, but it's good cheesy and easy watching and the fact that I'm in my 30s, it's always helpful to witness other people going though similar choices and having to make life decisions.

Enjoyable romcom, what's not to like?
22 February 2023
I really enjoyed this romcom, it was just what I needed after having a crap day at work. All the cast were enjoyable and capable I especially loved Zoe Chao who made me laugh the most (and had amazing outfits), and I wish she got a love story instead of being put into an alternative best friend type of trope. But I loved Reese, Ashton and Jesse in this. I'm a huge fan of romcoms, love Bridgerton, the cheesy Christmas films, and anything about love. The world has a lot of challenging/hard moments, so let's bring back the romcoms of the 90s please to spread some love, and smiles!!

If you want a relaxing movie that will make you smile, give this a go. But I think if we had more of a Holiday type or multi dimensional love story happening then it would have been a 10/10!

Abbott Elementary (2021– )
10/10
A Brilliant and refreshingly funny comedy
4 January 2023
I'm a big fan of the documentary comedies style, I mean I loved the US Office and Modern Family. Abbott Elementary is a hit - I've enjoyed watching this at the start of 2023. I think the main characters have been really well developed and I've already watched season 1 twice on Disney+ Uk - looking forward to when season 2 starts.

I normally don't like main characters, but I love Janine - she's optimistic despite the realities of the situation in her elementary school. Barbara is brilliant as the matriarch of the school and makes me laugh - I loved her intro. I actually think all the characters have been introduced really well. I love Ava - she makes me laugh so much.

Sometimes I do miss her joikes, but caught them on my re-watch. Gregory and Jacob do great facial expressions and I love their interaction with everyone else.

It's refreshing to see a comedy set in a primary school/elementary school - it's a show the whole family can watch.

Lovely Christmas Cheese & Freddie Prinze JR - right up my street!
21 December 2022
After a busy day at work, this was right up my street. I am 100% happy to confess that I love Christmas films. Yes, they're cheesy, that's why I love them. And it's good to see that all the streaming services are catching on that there's a big market for them. The world's a crazy and depressing place most of the time, so give me this cheesy diversion any day.

It was fantastic seeing Freddie Prinze Jr again (also loved seeing his wife in that teen film that reminded me of a darker Gossip Girl spin); I grew up with these actors - when I was a teen, they were teen heart throbs and there was a golden age of teen films, so it's all relative and their fans grew up with them. Freddie was brilliant in this. Let's see more films with them, I think a lot of people would be here for it and it would give us a break from the newer generation.

In terms of this film, instead of a woman being tired of her city life, it was a pop star not feeling inspired. It was a good spin on this genre, and everyone did a great job - the film made me smile and laugh and that's what I wanted.

Persuasion (I) (2022)
7/10
I'm an Austen fan and I enjoyed this
15 July 2022
I am an Austen fan, love Pride and Prejudice and Sense & Sensibility- both the books and drama and/or film versions. I've never read Persuasion, but I'm now curious to read after watching this to see what differences they made.

As a viewer watching not knowing the story of Persuasion; I enjoyed this and I think Anne and Captain Wentorth's love story held up, and brought a few tears to my eyes. It was a good film to watch on Friday night after having a super long week at work and struggling to work in the heat! So give it a go and don't listen to the haters. I'd be happy to watch this again; so I think it's a good film!

I thought Dakota J was great, and the actor who played CW. I also thought Anne's family were crazy in a funny way- Austen was always brilliant at depicting characters. Not my favourite Austen story: 1) P&P 2)S&S 3) Emma 4) Persuasion.

Hated the song at the end of the film; whilst I understood what they were trying to do, it was too overpowering; a lovely classical piece would have been better.

Such a let down
23 June 2022
Warning: Spoilers
This was supposed to be an epic finale, and instead it was rehashed scenes from previous films that were done worst this time round. The only reason this is rated more than 5 stars is due to Dewanda Wise- she added much needed energy and bad "assery" to key dinosaur interactions in this film. Chris Pratt seemed tired...and only cared about his promise to blue and whoever that girl was (seriously...who was she?!) And Bryce's best scene was when she submerged herself into the water...and was with Dewanda Wise, but the whole mum stuff was a bit boring....i think Dr strange's mum stuff twist was more interesting (and I'm a woman... but seriously please try to rework it in a different way to make it more epic...perhaps she could have died trying to save her daughter similar to harry Harry Potter and that would have been more interesting). Whilst it was lovely and nostalgic seeing the previous generation of Jurassic park people...it was more cute sweet and I felt they added nothing to the action. An interesting twist would have been if one of them died....or got seriously injured. Ultimately this film was just a big let down....we expected to see dinosaurs in the world and how to world dealt with it and instead we got a tired and restricted film where they put all the main people in one place, and it was whether they woulf get out alive! Also too much focus on those crazy locusts instead of actual dinosaurs!

Bridgerton (2020– )
10/10
Season 2 was brilliant; better than season 1!
1 April 2022
Season 3 review: a special place in my heart

Ok, so I'm writing this whilst in episode 3, Forces of nature. I was hoping I could watch this earlier in the evening, but as a lawyer I work late. I thought I'd watch 1 episode then go to bed after starting this at 10pm, but I just cannot stop watching. Luke's acting in this episode is fantastic. The moment at the end between Pen and Colin...I rewinded several times.

I wasn't sure how I'd find this season.. initially I was excited but the marketing was overkill, because anyone who's read the book knows how awesome Polin's story is. I mean it's the book I've read most out of the Bridgerton series. So my view was ...how could you not know what date their season was and not being excited to watch.

However over the top the marketing was, the romance and the beautiful moments between Penelope and Colin is warming my heart and making me cry happy tears. I can only imagine how I will feel once I get to part 2 and after all the nuances and changes in their love story and their relationship dynamic.

Luke Newton and Nicola Coughlan are brilliant in this. I knew they would smash it and they absolutely have. Romancing Mr Bridgerton is my favourite story from Julia Quinn's fantastic Bridgerton series, so I've read this book several times (especially cause we were forced to wait 2 years) and know all the special Polin moments, and whilst some variables have changed, they have kept key moments in.

This is romcom heaven. Romance and comedy- I can't stop smiling or laughing, especially with the beautiful awkwardness. I knew Nicola could do comedy from Derry Girls (check it out if you haven't), but love that both her and Luke are brilliant with their comedy and awkwardness as Penelope and Colin. It just fills my heart and makes my mouth hurt with smiling.

I will write again after watching part 2. It's challenging to review each season of Bridgerton. But Bridgerton has reminded me what it was like to be a teenager and love something passionately even though I'm in my 30s. I'm still a teen a heart.

I love Polin's story. I was curious about how graphic they would make the carriage scene...I thought it was modest compared to the book but still good. I like how they switched some of the lines. I.e. Colin said what Pen said once the carriage stopped...but I always love the carriage scene. I liked their version...I love the passion that comes when Polin argues (similar to the fiery passion that Kanthony has) so looking forward to seeing that in part 2.

All in all part 1 for me is 9/10. 1 point is deducted for splitting the season into 2 and making me wait 1 month. And knowing that I will want to sit through and watch the show all thought again....but that's really a delight instead of a chore. However, if it wasn't split....not sure how I'd fare at work tomorrow at least this way I get some sleep.

Luke and Nicola were 10/10...the cast is 10/10...can't wait to see the second half of Polin's love story and see everyone else develop. Also the rest of the cast is brilliant as always but maybe we haven't had as many Bridgerton family moments...I mean the pall mall scene in season 2 is excellent, as is the dancing scene. So whilst I love the focus of Polin's love story I also hope we get to see more moments of everyone together. I enjoy.th Featherington moment.... I'm a big fan of Portia and love every scene she's in. I feel the same for Queen Charlotte, Lady Danbury, Lady Violet Bridgerton so let's keep all their scenes coming.

Hannah Dodd as Francesca is excellent...they really brought out her character traits in this season and I was remembering bits from her season. Claudia is outstanding too ...showing her compassion for all these complicated characters she's friends witj. I never had a problem with her being friends with Cressida...I like that she sees the heart in her whilst still loving Pen even though she's pissed at her. But then I like a complex character... it's the same reason I like Penelope. Also seeing Colin grapple with his emotions and showing the angry side of Colin. Truly outstanding. Nicola is the beautiful smart girl and represents all us smart girls ...she was superb and I just want her to be happy. I can't wait to see fully happy Polin after they've overcome all their obstacles. Love this show so much (next time we don't need the marketing rammed down our throats ... people who knows it great know it's great... people who haven't heard must be living under a rock...ok my rant is over)

Let's go part 2. Also at the end of episode 4 I was literally on my feet watching with excitement ... it's that good and beautifully acted.

Season 2 was brilliant; better than season 1!

I didn't think Bridgerton or the writers could do it; I didn't think they could make me love Anthony and root for his love story, as he was my least fave character in season 1; but boy was I wrong. I was a hardcore fan of Simon and Daphne; but they've been eclipsed by my love and rooting for Anthony and Kate. Once I got to episode 3...I had to watch the rest of this season asap and probably did so in a night and a bit which wasn't great for my working from home schedule! I've not read any of the books but I will order this one. I just adore their love story and their conflict with their sense of duty to their family contrasted with their own personal desire and love for each other, which I can absolutely relate to. I'm an avid fan of Austen books, and possibly an even greater fan of the variations (I mean I also like to see what P&P would be with sex in it!) Anthony and Kate's story reminded me of a combination of Austen stories: Elizabeth Bennett and Mr Darcy (the love/hate romantic connection from Pride & Prejudice my fave Austen book), Marianne and Eleanor Dashwood (the Sense and Sensibility sisters both pursuing love with different dispositions), and Emma and Harriet (from Emma - falling for the same guy in Mr Knightley and Emma's conflict in respect of this).

I watched the show in less then 2 days because I had a couple of busy work days. But, if I didn't work, I would have watched it all in one sitting. This show helped me recover from a headache- that's how delightful it was.

If I have one criticism, I feel that we didn't get enough Anthony and Kate. So naturally, I'm going to rewatch immediately and also buy the book so I can learn every party of their love story. Also, I hope we get to see more of their love in the next seasons considering Kate is now Lady Bridgerton!

In terms of the other characters: the Bridgerton mum was fantastic portraying her grief, and I loved every scene with her, Daphne and Lady Danbury; plus all scenes where they were featured together. Look forward to seeing more of them in the latter seasons cause their also brilliant. I too laughed hysterically at the wedding when Violet Bridgerton and Lady Danbury laughed after having no idea what to do next, and when they tried to appease their queen (who also put in a strong performance). I did miss Simon initially and felt sad that we didn't get to see him and Daphne together but we did see their cute child! But let's be honest, I was here for the great love story between Anthony and Kate, and that's why I'm watching again and again (which I did not do for season 1- only watched that once). If I could have a condensed version of only their scenes together then that would be a truly great gift. I think YouTube will provide this

Jonathan Bailey and Simone Ashley were absolutely superb!! Please let's see them in the latter seasons together or I will be truly sad! I want more if their love story... maybe I should check for a variation!

9/10 due to too much Feathertons when I wanted more Bridgerton scenes!

Loving watching this! Excited for Eric and Helen!

Warning: Spoilers
I'm loving the development of Helen and Eric's relationship! I want them to get together already. The karaoke scene had me grinning from ear to ear- Heather's voice is amazing! I love how Maddie and Dana Sui respond to the hint of Helen and Eric!

Season 2 is delivering in buckets! They've fleshed out more of the other cast (and I don't hate the kids too much this time): the male basketball scene is cheesy but makes me smile. Basically this show is like the biggest hug and gives you lots of the best cheese! Why did we have to wait 2 years for a second season Netflix?!

I'm loving all of the main Magnolias. Maddie wasn't my fave in the first season but she's grown on me so much that I really like her now, especially as they explored how tough it can be to be a mum, who has a child or a couple of children, who may be struggling (instead of just focusing on her new love interest). So that was a great storyline for her. I also think exploring how much she can hate what her husband and Noreen did to her family due to the lasting trauma/impact and try to do the right thing, for her kids and explore forgiveness.

Dana Sui makes me laugh so much; she's so strong and fun, and swings between being a fun flirty woman and a strong mum and business woman. And the love triangle- well done! I wish we saw more of it...but here's hoping!

And Helen, I mean she's my fave (go figure, I'm a lawyer too - IRL) but that's not just why I love her. Her storyline this season was heartbreaking, and exciting. I love any scene between her and Eric! I love how she supports her friends and even supports CeCee as a junior future lawyer and sees the good in her. She's so compassionate and just a good person. And boy, her acting is amazing- she portrays the highs and lows so well!

So really happy it's back. I'll do an end if season review too! Netflix- Please do not take 2 years to give us another season!

Really enjoyable watch! K Stew was awesome!
29 January 2022
I enjoyed this from start to finish - the plot had good twists and it was well acted by all! I've been a fan of K Stew for ages; and it was good to see her in an action film where she gets to have fun! Love her in the twilight films too; but Bella is always nearly facing death in a more darker way! I also enjoyed the other ladies too and I hope to see more of them- their chemistry together was great! I enjoyed the fight scenes too!

A superb love letter to musical theatre and its creators!
18 January 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Andrew Garfield was delightful in this....i haven't seen him in anything for a while, but was happy to not only see him in the new spiderman film where he delivered so much heart, and in this film, where he shone in all ways. His performance was superb. He embodied Jonathan Larson's story so well- that I didn't know where he ended and JL began. What an ode to him, and what a love letter to musical theatre. I also enjoyed the Sunday nod to so many Broadway greats. I love theatre. I watch many plays on the west end in London and specifically travel to New York just to check out Broadway plays. So as a theatre lover, this film was right up my alley. Film wise I probably would say it's a 7/10, but due to my bias for theatre, it gets an extra star. I love musicals done well, and it was fascinating to see the creative inspiration behind the plays we love.

I hope Andew wins something for this inspired performance. Been a fan of his since I first saw him in the social network- he embodies characters so well and draws us in to their emotional state.

Final thought is that I found this film incredibly existential- it will make you think deeply about life, time, your purpose. Knowing Larson's story feels bitter sweet and devastating, but at the same time I'm glad he produced his masterpiece Rent, before he passed, even though he didn't get to see it on Broadway. Dream big and live boldy all. A beautiful sad film.

Don't Look Up (2021)

Depressing AF
14 January 2022
Warning: Spoilers
This was not a comedy or dark comedy in any way, it was depressing AF. I've only given it 2 stars for Jennifer Lawrence's and Leonardo DiCaprio's performance - at least their characters at some point in the film felt the gravity and anger at the end of the world and that no one was taking it seriously enough. It was also nice to see Jennifer acting well again as hadn't enjoyed some of her last performances. She was the only character who made me laugh...especially when she talked about the guy charging for the free food (I guess it's a metaphor of the corruption and power in the world). Leonardo was just as good as he's always been, but Jennifer was better for me. Whilst Meryl Streep played the incompent and dangerous Trump like President it was too concerning to be funny. And for me Trump being President was never funny- always saw how dangerous he was. A political satire that is funny is Veep ( love that show and even the Trump like presidential figure and dealing with issues such as sexual harassment still was funny, perhaps this film needed writers from that show). This film was depressing, and clearly the director/writer is angry at the world and taking nasty jabs at everyone: the media, the powerful techology and Corporate comoanies and of course the American government. Case in point that "save the world concert" with AG's song was just bizarre.. how on earth would you sing about the world ending like that. I didn't like any character in this film...only found J Law's one interesting. But I disagreed with one point: they didn't do everything they could...so the USA government was incompetent Af and didn't destroy the comet in time...are there no other governments and smart people around the world who can't do something?! Did people seriously plan no back ups? I mean they did have about 6 months and I'm sure they have weapons prepared for things like this.... also I'm not American so I found this poor concept in the film very unconvincing...yes the world is more global, but hello was America predominantly in the world wars?...i mean what was the UK and Europe doing?! So I just this film incredibly unrealistic and depressing. Will never watch again.

Let It Snow (2019)

Surprisingly fun teen film
12 December 2021
I surprisingly enjoyed this film. I'm an adult in my early 30s and it took me back to my teen years, of first kisses, first love, going to a cool party with your friends. It was really well done. I'll definitely watch it again.

The only issue I have is that this film was badly named...it should have been called Waffle Town! Let it snow was a poor title.

Dune (2021)
5/10
The trailer didn't convince me this was good and neither did the film
30 October 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Firstly, I have not read the book so I came to this film with no preconceptions whatsoever. I saw the trailer and I actually wasn't interested as the story didn't grab me (and hinsight shows I was right); but my friend convinced me to watch the film saying it was like lord or the rings meer star wars. Well i feel duped!

My biggest issue is that this was not advertised clearly as Dune Part One. If it was, I would never have gone to see it. The part one had no standalone story or ending so I felt like it sucked.

The only think I liked about it and what made me give it 45- I recognised some actors from other bit ilms like the avengers, spiderman, star wars, aquaman, call me by your name etc most of these people gave good performances in a film that had a weak story. Of course the downside of an all star cast is instead of thinking about the film I was watching, I was instead thinking (and laughing) to myself that Thanos and Aquaman were in a film together. Maybe , I'm done wirh these types of films!

Spoilers and plot issues:

Why did Jason Isaacs family and his whole family leave their own planet/home go to the desert country just because the empire said so? ! As a plot point this made no sense and wasn't properly explained. We were never introduced to the emperor and this was incredibly weird. At least in the avenger movies, or the lord or the rings or star wars films, we're usually always aware or who the enemy is and why the main characters are on the path they're on.

2. Who really cares about spice production?! Why is it so special and lucrative that people risk they're life for it in this dessert?! Is it the same as ring that will control all or middle earth? Or infinity stones that can wipe out whole worlds and species of people? Again, coming in cold, I just don't think this was explained clearly enough. And made no sense.

3. If Timothee Chamalet's chracter Paul and his mother is so powerful then why couldn't they stop the sand monsters?!

Gossip Girl (2021–2023)
6/10
Julien is a star but the GG plot point this time around sucks!
21 September 2021
Warning: Spoilers
What works:

It's pretty clear to see what characters were loved in the old GG series, and the new ones they have tried to create: the Serena character, the Blair Character, the other mean minion girls in the pack (it feels like there's a few Blairs, but the Blonde one in the unhappy relationship with the Nate type who hasn't really spoken much yet seems to be the main Blair.) The Dan Humphrey character. So they've mixed some of the characters up...so it's hard to figure out initially in the beginning...

What I love?

Julia/Jules/Julien - I really like her, In fact I find her intriguing. She draws you in...she reminds me of Blair with her minions but also has the niceness of Serena. I think she's supposed to be the updated Serena character, and I definitely prefer her more. I'm empathising with her more than I ever did with Serena, but then I super empathised with Blair and she was my fave. She has such a cool look; in fact she's stunning - she can rock that short hair in a way no other famous could (seriously Jennifer Lawrence did not look good with her short hair, Emma Watson was ok, but not great). So I think they picked the perfect "it girl" for this GG 2.0, cause I'm intrigued and so far she's my fave character and the reason why I'll continue to watch!

The possible throuple (anyone who's watched Schitt Creek will understand):

Audrey: is like a meaner and unlikable Blair so far( ...she could grow on me but Leighton Meester was a Brilliant actress who made us love Blair). She has mummy issues like Blair, and is in an unhappy relationship. Her mum seems to be a designer, who's husband has left her for an assistant. Didn't love her mum, whereas I loved Blair's mum (once the changed the one from the pilot)

Max: he's definitely a more extreme character and version of Chuck Bass, and very intriguing, (but then I also loved Chuck Bass I mean his lines made me laugh so much). Max is not as funny as CB (so far), but he has the same devilish and courageous trait that CB had. He's into sex, and with anyone (i.e. Men and women). Case in point, he's massively interested in participating with the sexual active couple....and seems to be interested in both the guy and girl, just like their intrigued by him! He's also trying to seduce a Male (probably gay) teacher. Whereas Chuck was straight in an extreme way. So it's going to be interesting to watch Max and the throuple develop!

Aki: not sure what I think of him yet; he's part of an unhappy sexually active couple. He reminds me a little of Nate but also of no one in particular. But I'm a little intrigued, although I haven't heard him speak much yet. So I don't hate him, but I'm intrigued to see more.

What I don't like?

Unfortunately, not feeling Obie (the obvious Nate) or Zoya (the Dan H outsider type) yet...or maybe never. If Zoya is the Dan Humphrey type then it might make sense that I'm not a fan, as I never liked his character (although I was a fan of Penn Badgley's performance as DH.) I never liked how Nate got between 2 best friends, and I don't like how Obie is getting between 2 sisters! Plus...unlike Nate...Obie doesn't have that Nate Prince Charming quality on the outside...I mean he does nothing for me (and Nate didn't either but at least I got it). This Obie guy is another wealthy guy who feels guilty for his wealth so tries to do good but I hope he gets ripped apart more, for coming between two sisters and still acting like he's high and mighty and in the right! I always felt Nate got away with so much in the original show, yet he was the biggest male "ho".

What I hate?

Issue 1:

The fact that the teachers are gossip girl - it's absolutely crazy and doesn't make any sense! Yes, these students are entitled and privileged, and treat the teachers like shit, but it's so weird and breaks so many ethical ideas of what a teacher should be. It was just the weirdest way to reintroduce Gossip Girl in the wake of social media. The whole point of what made the original show interesting is who GG was...now it's going to be whether the teachers get caught?! It's madness! Whoever came up with this idea, really missed a trick. Everyone has shitty school experiences so why not just use another character who was not a dan humpry type. Maybe do it from the Georgina type perspective (who I always loved her). So basically, I am really not a fan of Ms Keller and I don't empathise with her at all...in the same way I didn't with the hypocritical teacher who was mean to Blair and slept with Dan.

Issue 2:

The fact that the new characters are similar to the old beloved ones...it would have been nice if they introduced a different dynamic. I mean there were so many teen shows with different dynamics...dawson's creek, one tree hill, gossip girl...all different types of friendships. Why could they not be more original than the original GG?!

Issue 3:

The Julien/Zoya siblingship is quite boring to me at least from the Zoya perspective. I love Julien - already fan (in case that's not obvious, as she balances the queen B and having a heart really well) so she gives a lot of heart to the sister dynamic and show. Seriously, she's so good. Unfortunately, I just don't feel the same about Zoya...I mean how does she immediately start dating her sisters ex BF and why did she not feel that tension more (at least S felt that)...what about sisters before bro?! As such, I don't know if we'll ever get the B/S dynamic from them...I sense the B/S dynamic will come from Julien and Audrey cause they're much more interesting characters and very good actresses and seem to be "actual friends". Whilst I never loved S as much as I did Blair, I always loved their friendship, especially the heartful moments and when they fought, it gave some good scenes...especially the fights over queen B.

So I'm only 2 episodes in, but these are my initial thougths. It definitely has the initial GG addictive aspect to it..

P.s. Not sure if the parents add much as they did in the first one...verdict is still out on that!

So this is a 6/10. Marks deducted for the negatives highlighted above under the hate section (especially the teachers being GG!! You need to find a way to fix this!) But this could have been lower, if it wasn't for Julien!

It brought me back to my uni years! Loved it!
13 September 2021
I've been a fan of this series for a while, episodes 1, 2 and the last one of series 1 are some of my faves. I wasn't sure about series 2, the first espiode with Minnie driver is really sad. The strangers on a train was a good one that I liked, though the ending left me wanting more! But this episode was perfect because it gave me all of the feels...it reminded me of young love, including the most painful: unrequited love! Boy did I have my heart broken in my teens and uni years, and this episode was a perfect omagh to those times. As such, it's my fave episode so far in season 2. I thought the acting wasperfect in capturing the innocence, the awkwardness, the first times...and I truly am surprised that people have are not a fan. Unless super older people are watching it? But I'm in my early 30s and have appreciated all of the episodes in different ways. I've seen this actress before in Judas and the Black Messiah, and it was good seeing her in a different role, and she was equally great. The guy was awesome (and gorgeous). The young stars were great as well. This reminded me a little of Brown Sugar ...

Cinderella (I) (2021)
6/10
Was ok, except for Camilla Cabello and certain changes
9 September 2021
It's a very modern take of Cinderella. I found the music very distracting to the story of Cinderella, and at times too much. I like musicals done well, where songs are used for key significant moments. There were loads of songs in this...for unnecessary moments. Whilst I enjoyed aspects of the film, on the whole I didn't love it, so I wouldn't watch it again. It did not come close to the 2015 Cinderella version with Cate Blanchett and Lily James in terms of the fantastic acting in that and commitment to the story. I've watched that version several times! I think Indina Menzel and Camila Cabello have great voices but their voices eclipsed the rest of the cast! Not sure if that was a wise thing, as it meant that I really didn't enjoy it when other people sang as it seemed bad/poorer compared to CC's and IM's songs (except for Billy Porter and Minnie Driver). I also didn't like all the changes in story line. The music moments made me laugh out loud (not in a good way), especially when the UK comedians were singing! I also found the different genres of songs distracting. It might have been better if it was music/songs directly written for the story....a sort of "Wicked" type of film. But, alas this was not it. They tried to do a lot of song mash ups, which I didn't enjoy. I'm still being nice giving this 6/10... it's probably closer to 5.5/10, because there were too many songs at big moments. I would have preferred no singing for their main dance....they could have just danced, and sang after and it would have been better. Finally, I didn't enjoy CC's Cinderella, I definitely felt she was a singer first, dancer 2nd and actress third (shown by the last song/dance number), but I liked IM's step mum - she got the balance right between her acting and fantastic singing (not surprising as her theater background came through)...but still she was not as great as Cate Blanchett or Angelica Houston's step mum..perhaps because she wasn't allowed to act more and the songs took over! I liked the prince, except for his singing (although his voice is not horrible). I also loved Minnie Driver in this, but then I love her in anything, and she's great with dramatic and comical roles. Pierce Brosnan did well too as the king - I'm glad he didn't have a lot of singing to do! In conclusion, one watch of this film is enough. It wasn't magical for moi. And I'm not a fan of CC's music career; perhaps if I was a fan before, I would have liked her in this more.

The Choice (I) (2016)

I loved this- and similar to the Notebook in terms of how it makes you feel
1 July 2021
I loved the notebook at university. In fact my best friends and I did. Whenever we watched it, we had to pause it to have a good cry as it was a little too intense at moments, and that's how we felt at18/19! I had the samestype of reaction to this film and had to do the same pause (and I am now 10 years older). I loved this film and will definitely watch it again. It definitely had me invested in both of the main characters from the beginning. The location was beautiful - it made me think of Dawson's Creek's location. I have not seen the main two in anything else before (although I was aware of Tom Welling and the main guy's father), but they gave fantastic and incredibly believable performances. I was invested up until the end, and although it reminded me of the notebook, I was wondering if I loved it more than the notebook. I concluded that I love them just the same but in very different ways. There are two main choices that must be made in this film, that's all I will say regarding plot! I will be recommending this film to all of my close girlfriends.

Daniel Kaluula's performance is phenomenal as Fred Hampton
4 June 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Daniel Kaluula's performance is phenomenal as Fred Hampton. His performance was so transformative that I was mesmerised by it, and literally sat at the edge of my seat throughout the whole film. I've been a fan of his since I was a teen, and this was definitely the performance of his career - all of the accolades are well deserved. If you thought he was good in Get Out, he is on another level in this film. I felt like I got to meet Fred Hampton, and wow, what a man. I've always been in awe of DK's American accent too- so seamless, you would never know he's British like me. I knew a little about Fred Hampton, but I will go away to learn more about him and the Black Panther movement because of this film.

This is an amazing and key story for civil and equal rights. I don't want to give any spoilers, but you will hate Lakeith Stanfield's character in this film. What a wicked and weak person. However, Lakeith plays this character well.

One final bit, this film is so timely, when you consider that people who put on a police suit still think that they can kill black men and women, and get away with their crime without punishment. It does an excellent job at showing the police system (right up to the FBI) as using propaganda and absolute racism to justify killing black people in a "legal way". When we all know that the practices they have is amoral, and absolutely should not be legal or legitamised by the system in any way. But, we all know the painful truth: this is still happening and has been happening for a long time. I would research what was put in the police report after Fred Hampton's murder- " i.e. They tried to portray that the black panthers in the flat had been combative with them, when in fact they were asleep, and the majority of the bullets (99) were shot by the police, and only 1 was shot by black Panthers, who lost 2 of their own or were seriously injured during this raid. It made me think of nazi Germany, or any country where genocides have happened, and how they use propaganda to justify unspeakable evil against their own citizens. In this way, the police are legitamised criminals: one might even say that they are legal executioners of those they fear. Some people will cry when they watch this film, as my friend did. I was inspired and motivated: we cannot turn a blind eye to the wickedness in the world, and I will do my part to use my voice to call out any injustices I see. This film did an excellent job in showing how police have been terrorising black people, by describing them as terrorists or criminals, and using this justification as an excuse for unleashing pure evil and brutality on black people. If the Black Panthers and other black militant groups were armed, could we really blame them when the police/fbi can walk into their homes at night whilst their sleeping and kill them?! This is still happening today. The death of George Floyd last year showed that. The death of Breonna Taylor showed that. This brutality must stop. I will be telling all of my family and friends to watch this. And I will definitely watch it again to see the amazing performance by Daniel Kaluula. As someone who is around the same age as him, and has been a fan since his days in Skins :I was wonderfully proud of this inspired performance! A must watch.
