World War Z (2013)
Definitely worth watching it on d big screen i had my apprehensions but was surprised!
I dint really have a lot of expectations from the movie & i guess its better to keep ones expectations low rather than build them up for being let down aka last week and man of steel case in point. Every week apparently this year Hollywood is throwing at us how the world will end or change in different versions...be it Man Of steel fighting ZOD or the dud After earth or upcoming Pacific Rim. The tendency is to give u a big blockbuster action packed visual feat where the world is at stake. After a while action without purpose tends becomes repetitive and if u always get what u expect and have seen before then what's the purpose of watching a new film anyway i say? This is where exactly "World War Z" differs, u do have action scenes, big visuals but not at the expense of the story, it serves as way to forward the story instead the other way around. Zombies and gore are something we have seen umpteen number of times but to see how this particular Zombie situation could actually turn things around the globe in a split second around without gorge is more of an achievement i would say than a let down. Brad Pitt is more than just a pretty lad, he has somewhat an enigmatic presence on screen which keeps u hooked, u do connect with him at some level and think that gosh if the world did need some1 to save it from Zombies (since no superhero here or avengers would b useful here) u would want to have Brad Pitt be that man on your side! His search for a solution to the Zombie problem is pretty much the crux of the story. There are a few shock moments which does make u jump in the seat though 3d is pretty much wasted an useless. I haven't read the book so cant draw a conclusion but in my experience besides Lord of the Rings books always tends to be better than the movie itself, so i would say its a blessing in disguise if u haven't read the book! Not often can a whole family go and see a Zombie flick which is pretty much Rated R but this 1 actually is PG13 which makes it that rare kinda scary movie a family of 4 could go and see together which i guess is also a bonus. The movie does have its faults and could certainly be better but the fact that in the roughly 2hr runtime of the movie the story constantly moves ahead with a purpose and doesn't drag it feet is what in the end makes it watchable and is the real icing on the cake! Don't be 1 of those blokes always looking for gore & over d top action & give the story a chance & u will enjoy it otherwise u will come out cribbing! To wrap it up i would like to say this movie is more personnel in the form of a blockbuster which doesn't happen 2 often now days!
The Bourne Legacy (2012)
The Bourne Legacy actually suffers from being exactly that, Jason Bourne s legacy!
Caught d movie on its worldwide release. The Bourne Legacy actually suffers from the Legacy of Jason Bourne as on a standalone basis the film is actually above average. However being a sequel which actually runs parallel to the 3rd film (a first of sorts for sequels i reckon) the film fails on tempo and action is jaded and somewhat falls flat in comparison to the tempo set by Matt Damon s and Paul's grasses Bourne franchise Films, which are also known for being aggressive in execution. Especially the style of camera work (first person view) in Jason Bourne films really adds to the tension but here i actually fell asleep during some parts as they just talked and talked and then talked some more! Since originality in screenplay is dead the studios now rely on just milking successes full franchises (splitting 1 part into 2's like harry potter n upcoming turkey twilight for egg) rather than taking risk with something new or fresh. At the end your are left pondering, Why is this film there? the Bourne series finished as 1 of the best action spy trilogy and this film feels like those attempts such as Terminator 4 and terminator 5 which despite having Christian Bale dint wet any 1es appetite! Sadly The Bourne name may get this 4th installment (without Bourne actually being there!!) the required box office numbers and we may yet see another sequel, which will again be a waste of time, space, money, acting talents etc. The thing with good things is you should know when its done with rather than confirm that its over, sometimes going out on a high is the right thing, which this film surely isn't. If u do see it then erase the previous Bourne films from Ru memory and treat this on its own merit and u may well enjoy it as something above average but the moment u start comparing this 1 with previous Matt Damon's installment this 1 turns out to be a cold turkey!
Starship Troopers: Invasion (2012)
A different feel cause of the newly adapted CGI animation
Every since the first Starship Troopers film which was brilliant SCi-Fi action thriller this series always has its fans hoping against hope. This 1 is a CGI based film whose graphics looks like xbox360 games. Rico, Carmen are back and the script and action is decent. The animation script borrows from and feels like Aliens and several other such genre films compressed by bits into this 1. But for PPS who cant get enough of the troopers this is a just above average flick, which entertains with its action and thrills in a decent sort of way. Much better than any of the other sequels ever since the first (Starship film released) by a far shot i think at least. Watch it if Ur a fan and want to turn back the clock and see some bugs getting squashed avoid if u expecting a lot more! And it is Rated R for good reason so the animation is targeting the older youth rather than teens or kids, so not for Children certainly.
The Dictator (2012)
Outrageous and over the top just as expected as Always!
Every Since "Ali G" from the big Ben and "Borat" from Kazakhstan (where by the way i have been to and is nothing like in the film!) and the recent gay fashion designer "Bruno", Sacha Baron Cohens sense of humor and character comedy is either liked by one for being so outrageously over the top or is simply crude and sick! I have actually quite enjoyed his over the top characters! This 1 though gives u the feeling that hes actually trying to make these outrageous (which cannot be described) work very hard unlike say in Borat where it worked naturally somehow for him. It does have some outrageous parts and fun (doing a spoof of Sadam Hussain having fun is itself unbelievable) but kinda feels like u have seen the jokes bf4 in another way. Yet for the sheer gusto by which Sacha goes abut playing An Arab Dictator aka Saddam! is worth seeing 1nce perhaps? Hez a very different kind of say Austin powers. Its mindless yet there seems to be an attempt at creating some heartfelt moments but then goes back to what he knows best int the end, tried and tested. See this 1 if u r a fan or wait for his next which is apparently a spoof on James Bond! Don't see this if u have a weak stomach for theatrics, there are scenes here which will just make u sit back and say what the hell is happening!
