This new storyline is far better
17 February 2024
The Blackwell series has been really good, for the most part. While I enjoyed the paranormal aspects of previous, I far prefer the new, grounded in "reality" approach. The shift away from the paranormal was needed. It had run its course. Having an actual killer is genuinely creepy, far more so than flipped tables, open cabinets, and ghosts banging on doors.

The only problem I have is that there's never a sense that Turner is in actual danger. He said so himself. The guy doesn't want to hurt him. It would add to the scares if the killer actually DID want to harm Turner. I'd like to see Turner get sick of being timid and tell this guy enough is enough. Bring it on.

I'm invested again. Hopefully 9 will come sooner than 8 did. Sitting on another year long "to be continued" would be a bummer.

Complete mess. Shady con-job by Bloody Disgusting
25 February 2023
Total embarrassment to Found Footage horror.

You get an hour of the most boring and monotonous story you can imagine followed by maybe the most nonsensical trash I've ever seen. There's no rhyme or reason. No coherent storyline. Why is this happening? Better yet, what is happening? I have no idea.

Loud noises. They love the loud noises.

Random flashes of..stuff.

No idea what is happening.

Lots of blood from an attack by..?? No idea.

Main character walks around being weird.

Still no idea what is happening.

Lots of lights, weird imagery, and fast shaky shots of..no idea.

More loud noises Main character gets even weirder.

The end.

I have no idea what happened and I don't even care. This was like an art-house attempt at being weird for the sake of being weird. The only thing that stands out about this movie is the audio. Without that, you might have the most pointless found footage film of all time. You probably still do.

PS. Bloody Disgusting and primarily Brad, really lose a ton of credibility for hyping this movie up. I didn't realize they had money in it. Also, check the reviews with the high scores and you'll see the users just joined and this is the only movie they've ever reviewed.

Skip the animal scene, not the movie.
20 January 2023
This movie is ugly..but its excellent. I'm not gonna bother talking about why I liked it. Plenty of other reviews sum it up just fine. I just want to address the animal torture scene. The director crossed that line that just doesn't need to be crossed. Nobody wants to see an animal tortured. Reading the reviews, I see a number of people turned the movie off. I get it. Luckily, watching this at home, rather than in a theater, you can fast forward through it. I knew it was coming so when a cat was introduced around 20 minutes in, I held down the fast forward button. I was able to look away. I stopped it at 27 minutes and the scene had passed. It ended up being a hell of a movie. One of the best "horror" films of the year, in my opinion. I don't know why the director felt the need to throw that scene in but it's such a good movie, it's worth the quick trouble of having to hit the fast forward button.

Chucky fan? Go for it. Not? Avoid.
6 January 2023
M3gan is basically a clone of Chucky which is unfortunate as I can't stand Chucky. That puts me outside of the "target audience", though, so I'm not gonna trash the movie or give it 1 star. It's not my type of horror. It wasn't made for me. I expected it to be a bit different. It wasn't. Fair enough. I'd say if you're a fan of the Child's Play franchise, give it a go. The critiques I will make, though, are that Chucky has a sense of humor about it's ridiculousness which is maybe the only entertaining aspect of those films for me. Same goes for Leprechaun. M3gan doesn't have that. It packs zero surprises and isn't remotely scary. You know exactly how the movie will flow and eventually end.

Great until the last 15 minutes
30 October 2022
Warning: Spoilers
First off, salute to the director and writer. In the wrong hands, this could have easily fallen into complete silliness.

Secondly, the movie doesn't cater to the PG13 crowd. It felt more real. The character acts and reacts in a genuine way we would all react if some insane situation arose.

Third, it was a smooth ride. No real filler or derailing of the tense plot.

So, what's the problem? It's the last 15 or so minutes. It goes in a random direction. An under devoped detail, which is more like an afterthought throughout, ends up front and center as the solution. It wasn't interesting and it wasn't the right way to go. I will say that the very last scene does give us a good payoff, though.

Bottom line: I'd definitely recommend it. I think most viewers will really enjoy the bulk of the movie. I'm certain plenty of you will disagree with me regarding the ending and like it just fine. A solid 7 of 8 overall.

Accident (I) (2017)
1/10
I have no idea. You won't either.
24 October 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Some guys stole a car. The car had money in it. It's not clear whether or not they knew that. Maybe? They almost hit 2 hitchhiking girls (the main characters) so they apologize and give them a ride. OK. The accident happens. The girls are trapped but both of the guys were ejected. One has a tree branch sticking out of his chest. He wants to help the girls get out but his friend thinks they're a loose end or something. I'm not sure. Then, some guy shows up and puts a fake FBI badge on and kills a cop who had stopped. I THINK he had a tracer on the car and was coming for the money. Then, you have some other guys in a helicopter who I also thought wanted the money but then they just start shooting at the guys and try to blow up the car. I'm not sure who they were or what they wanted. They die when their helicopter hits a cable. The car gets knocked into the water and one of the girls gets loose but doesn't seem interested in saving her best friend who's now drowning. She kills the fake FBI guy. Then I guess she actually does want to save her friend, even though its now been like 10 minutes. So, tree branch guy helps her get her friend out. He drowns and she gets really sad which made me think maybe she knew him all along. She and her friend hug and then walk up to the road. The End. Oh wait, a flash sequence occurs. They get hit by a car. Everybody's dead.

I've seen a lot of awful movies but I don't know that I've ever seen one that just didn't bother making sense at any point regarding literally anything. Not a single thing here is explained. I, quite literally, have no idea what was going on. I'm not a negative person but this director has no business ever making another movie. Complete buffoonery.

It's Dashcam but the main character isn't awful
8 October 2022
The problem with Dashcam was that the girl was maybe the most unlikable idiot I've ever seen in a film. The main character here is great. He plays the obnoxious viewer-chasing blogger but in a way you genuinely like him. Also, the story uses the livestream far better. It's almost like a Who Wants To Be A Millionaire lifeline. It's an asset to the story, not just an aspect.

Is it scary? Sort of. They build up the tension quite a few times. It will be heading towards nerve-racking but then they'll interject comedy and kind of let you off the hook. This isn't a criticism, though. It's a horror infused with comedic elements. My feeling is that it's exactly what the director wanted it to be. While I personally would have liked them to push farther with the scares, that wasn't their plan. Fair enough.

I definitely recommend it. Between this, Sissy, and V/H/S 99 (which I got to see a screener for), Shudder is on a roll.

Go to the theater and see it ASAP.
5 October 2022
I saw a screener and while grateful, this is meant to be seen with a group of people. The fact they've managed to get theaters to agree to show it feels like a hilarious troll job. I guarantee you it will be yanked within a week or 2, unfortunately. Dolts who sleep with the closet light on after seeing something like The Conjuring will absolutely lose their minds. People will feel violated and theaters will cave in. The same thing happened with Hatchet 2 and Hatchet 2 isn't even in the same stratosphere as this movie.

Utter insanity. An absolute freak show, in the best possible way. It's dark. It's hilarious. It's cruel. It's like the first one but twice as drunk and dealing with paranoid schizophrenia and a crack habit. I mean that as a compliment.

Shockingly bad.
30 September 2022
I have no idea what the Bloody Disgusting team was thinking here. This was like a bad joke. There is nothing..not one thing..scary in this movie. If anyone says otherwise, they need their head checked. The segments are all cheap, creature features. I'm talking CHEAP and not a single segment even remotely based in reality. This feels like they took some rejected submissions to VHS 94, slapped them together, and went for cash grab.

I love found footage footage. As much as I didn't like Viral, I still really hoped it would do well so we would get more installments. I figured they'd rebound the next go round..and they did, at times. They've proven incapable of matching the quality of their first 2 but they still put out some solid segments. So, my vote was to keep them coming. A few good VHS stories are better than no VHS stories. I guess I still feel that way. If another comes, I'll check it out. If not, RIP. I doubt anybody cares at this point.

Disrespectful to the horror community.
22 September 2022
This had no business being in theaters. The fact that it was a theatrical release puts it on the radar of far more "critics" than a VOD release. That's a nightmare for a genre that has, for the most part, been on a roll as of late.

Horror is constantly forced to prove itself; What have you done for me lately? Well, lately, "Pearl" came along and gave the genre a huge boost, critically. A week later, this trash comes out and does it's best to undo the progress.

I don't care that I wasted 90 minutes. I do care that those 90 minutes could effect the genre as well as the very idea of making sequels.

I really like it..but I wouldn't recommend it.
17 September 2022
Warning: Spoilers
This is a tricky one. On the one hand, the red flags create an intense feeling of dread. On the other hand, it never should of gotten to that point. The couple was flat-out idiotic. Plain and simple. Reading the reviews, a lot of people disliked the movie because of this. Understandable. It's maddening to see 2 people behave so passively and seal their own fates. I, however, think this was done for that exact reason. I think the director wanted us to feel the this way.

The ending is beyond disturbing but rather than feel anger towards the bad guys, you feel anger towards the good guys for allowing this to happen. That's tough to pull off

It really messed with my emotions. I think that might have been the whole point.

Glad I saw it early. Ms. Wilde ruined her own film.
8 September 2022
I attended a test screening in early August. The whole thing was odd because I've been to test screenings in the past and they've been months in advance of the release date. The whole point is to "test" it and make changes. I'm not sure what they could have changed in the last 3 or 4 weeks. I mention this because there is no way I could watch this movie today and not be completely distracted by the off-screen drama. A lot of people are going to "hate-watch" this movie. I cant blame them. Ms. Wilde has managed to sabotage her own film.

Anyway, the movie itself.. it's not bad. It's not what a lot of these 1 star reviews are saying. I think, and understandably so, the the off-screen drama has completely ruined the experience for most people. Like I said, I don't think I could sit down and watch it today and NOT be completely distracted the whole time.

Anyway, while its not bad, It's definitely not good. It's the epitome of an average to below average movie.

The good: It was fun to look at. The camera work, the sets, the wardrobe. All very unique and well done. There were also some really good performances. Florence Pugh was definitely the best. Also, Harry Styles. Yes, Harry Styles. He was great. The guy seems to just be a natural at whatever he does.

The bad: The plot. The script. All the really important stuff. It's just not nearly as clever or boundary-pushing as Ms. Wilde thinks it is. It borrows aspects from movies like The Truman Show and Pleasantville (both great movies) and then mixes them with an attempt at some intense psychological thriller. It doesn't work. At all.

The problem with the movie is simple. This is a bad script. You can throw 6 or 7 good actors and one great actress into a film but if their lines are bad.. if their characters do nonsensical things.. if the plot isn't interesting.. You have nothing. You just have missed opportunity.

Mind games and their power.
1 September 2022
The good: All 4 actors nailed their role. This is especially true for the "uninvited guests". They really fed off of each other.

Humor. This wasn't a scary movie. The director kept it clever and embraced the ridiculousness.

The bad: You could see the ending from a mile away.

I kept thinking things would ramp up into a wild finale. That never came.

It was beyond implausible and, at times,, you'll find yourself rolling your eyes.

Overall, I do recommend it, though. The acting alone makes some of the silly moments less silly and actually quite amusing. If you're looking for scares, however, this is not the plsce.

If you don't like found footage..stop watching these
26 August 2022
Half the reviews on here are trashing the movie because of its budget and camera work. This is found footage horror. I see this happen all the time on here with these movies. It takes all of 2 minutes to see what kind of movie this is. Turn it off and move along. Don't get on here and bash something you knew you wouldn't like anyway.

Anyway. Really enjoyed this movie. Simple but effective. Felt like something that could actually happen. A couple moments you get the eye-rolling bad decisions from the characters but they were necessary to get to the ending.

Solid B overall. Won't scare you to death but the 'this could happen ' vibe sticks with you and keeps you engaged.

Relatable and scared the crud outta me
9 August 2022
I was bored yesterday cause there weren't no Nascar on. The title caught my eye cause it used the / symbol. Never seen that in a movie name. Anyways I enjoyed the heck out of it. The characters reminded me of me and my buddies. A lot of simularatees. This one of them scarey movies you have some buddies over for and kick back some bruskis. So, in collusion, I say check this flick out.

Not sure what he was thinking
27 May 2022
The plot is bizarre on so many levels. The person/ghost whom the movie is centered upon would not go about scaring the crap out of him (and the 2 other characters). However, by choosing that person, the scares are going to have to come from that person. He pigeonholed himself.

I'm a fan of the series. This felt like a Goodbye. I can totally appreciate him wanting to end the movie (and possibly the series) on a happy note. This just wasn't the way. If he did intend of this being the end, I hope he will reconsider. He's brought us a very cool franchise. I have no doubt that he can end it on a high note, if he is indeed calling it quits.

Don't bother. Nonsensical mess.
24 May 2022
You get that annoying and incredibly vague ending that makes you immediately jump to YouTube for answers. With this movie, though, you really don't even care. The movie isn't clever. It's nonsense. The director and writer aren't clever. They're weird.

My message to Turner Clay, should you read this.
14 January 2022
I get* what you were initially doing with the films. Nothing over the top. Just enough to be unnerving but never enough to make a skeptic cry foul. 5 films in, however, you've kind of picked sides. Though you still present the movies as real, I can't imagine many people are still under that illusion. The fact that I've watched all 5 is a testament solely to how enjoyable you are as a character. These movies are nothing more than average without your character.

My point is that it's time to amp it up. Show us the supernatural. Throw it in our face. You're letting us off too easy. We know it's not real..and that's perfectly fine. You make them feel real enough that going full force with the scares and showing us ghosts won't hurt your films. They'll make them THAT much better. So, take a chance. Amp it up.

Possibly the worst I've ever seen.
4 January 2022
I'm not exaggerating. I never say a movie is the worst I've ever seen. I'll say it sucked or I hated it..but this is different..I'm actually more confused or, I guess, surprised that a studio released it..not just because it's bad..bad horror movies get released all the time. This was different, though. The director and writers, quite literally, accidentally messed up/forgot their own plot. If you want to know what I'm talking about reviewers, read the reviewers who have marked their reviews as spoilers. It's too much stuff to list. But yea, I've never seen anything like it.

But hey..if you read this review and still choose to watch it..come back and write your own review. Deal?

Plot=4 + Michael Myers = forever a 10 = 7 overall
3 January 2022
Unlike Jason, you could throw Michael Myers on a spaceship and I'd still enjoy it. I don't subscribe to that crap about killing a a film or TV series because it isn't what it was in it's glory days. I see this sentiment a lot with The Office. No Michael Scott, no thanks. Couldn't disagree more. I'll take a mediocre version of something I enjoy over nothing.

In terms of the movie itself, yes, the plot sucked. No sugar-coating it. It was goofy and beyond lazy. Townspeople banding together like a bunch of vigilante hillbillies with pitchforks to dish out justice is just a corny idea. I suppose it'd be fine if it were just a small part (like the ending of part 4) of an overall larger and more complex plot..but it wasn't. It was the entire plot. Therefore, there are no surprises or things to keep you guessing. It's just a bunch of idiots basically lining up to get slaughtered. It felt like one of the lesser entries in the F13th franchise. Stack up the kills and throw plot ideas at the wall and see what sticks.

The plots of the Halloween films will always be secondary to the reason we're all here: Michael. Still, a plot that isn't even remotely competent or interesting is a huge bummer.

To my earlier point, we get Michael Myers back in action. It was a waste but I'll take it. Additionally, like most of you true Halloween fans, I'll be first in line when the next one drops later this year. It can't be worse..right?

I couldn't have cared less. Boring and annoying.
8 November 2021
Warning: Spoilers
There's nothing special about this film. Back in the early 80's, it was apparently controversial and taboo. Add that to the fact it's an old foreign horror movie, and film geeks flock to this.

In terms of the movie itself, there's zero reason to watch this. It's just a weirdo killing a few people that you don't care about, guided by his never ending voice-over about how his childhood sucked. Good films provoke emotions, good or bad. This film provokes nothing but absolute indifference.

If your genre of choice is horror, you've seen this sort of film plenty of times and you've seen it done far better.

Best tour. Best album. Best setlist. Best quality.

If you are a fan of Talk show, this is gold. This was right before they broke up but watching them on stage, you would have no idea. Talk Show is my favorite album so hearing these songs live with good quality video (for the time) is amazing. Many of these songs have not been performed since this tour in 1984. That's a damn shame.

The score is dropping faster than my stock portfolio
6 October 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Segment One: I'm digging it. Something about a lizard monster had been mentioned but that's ridiculous so that was obviously a misdirection..right? Ambitious reporter and her camera man venture deep into a creepy storm drain with a new story in mind. It's getting tense. Oh no...the lizard was real and he's..a demon God? Or something. Ok.

Segment 2: Something is thumping around in a coffin. Let's flicker some lights and fail to build tension. OK, here ya go. He only has half a head. Crazy, right?

Segment 3: Nice work. Not as good as your cult story in the 2nd one but better than anything in this.

Segment 4: Nope. Not 100% sure what the idea was but 100% sure it sucked.

The wraparound: Often in life, less is more. For example, a half naked undead man sitting in a recliner or a woman watching tapes in an not-so-empty house. Simple. Effective. Unsettling. 8 awful actors running around a very elaborately decorated warehouse and a twist ending that none of us deserved. Complicated. Eye-rolling. I hate you.

I'd like to apologize to VHS Viral and all the mean things I said about you. While you still suck, you don't seem to suck nearly as much today as you did yesterday.

If Halloween Kills or the new Paranormal Activity pull a VHS 94 on me, I'm switching to romantic comedies from now on. This is bad for my mental health.

Average film, yes..but these reviews are just idiotic
28 September 2021
If the first line of your review is "I don't like found footage films", you're an actual idiot. Not because you don't like found footage. Rather, because you chose to watch something you knew you weren't going to like and then came here to tell us you didn't like it. Your review is absolutely pointless.

Anyway, for those of you who, like myself, really love found footage horror, this is going to disappoint you. It's not bad but it certainly isn't anything worth watching. This movie had a decent budget and was even backed by the guy who did Paranormal Activity. Most found footage horror movies are working with scraps and tiny budgets. This film had the resources to create something special but completely failed.
