Allan Quatermain and the Lost City of Gold (1986)
unwatchable and cruel
I can forgive the lousy acting and effects, but the constant murder of animals is simply sickening. A hard no. Couldn't watch past the first 40 minutes.
Outcast (1937)
Misogynistic nonsense
Warren William was brilliant as the Lone Wolf, and there's the excellent Esther Dale, which is why I watched this, but omg, what a load of nonsense! The men is hardworking, loyal, wonderful and wise, while the women are hysterical and stupid, leading to those saintly men suffering.
Bilge.
Seinfeld (1989)
Mr Brown is classic but the rest not funny
The episodes featuring animals are especially awful. Not my thing
Rain (1932)
Fantastic adaptation
Joan Crawford is brilliant in this: moody, happy go lucky, tough and generous yet vulnerable. Truly excellent cast, from the poisonous cow who spouts salvation to the shop owner who doesn't want to know. The filmography is excellent too, nice and moody. Worth watching
Lend Me Your Husband (1935)
Great idea but lousy execution
The plot is excellent: the wife knows the husband is off with the mistress, and the so-called affair turns sour. It looks set to be lots of fun.
But then it falls apart. When he finds out the women talked, he slaps the mistress around and locks her in, which is apparently amusing. After a long scene of "Daddy will spank", I switched it off. There are tonnes of great films in 1935. This is not one of them.
The Rage of Paris (1938)
It has all the right ingredients but the spark's missing
A classic comedy about a girl whose scheme to marry into money is thwarted. Danielle Darrieux is lovely and Douglas Fairbanks Jr his usual charming self, but the whole thing just lacks oomph. It's one I won't watch again.
High Society (1956)
Thoroughly enjoyable
It's a romance with too many big ideas explored too lightly. As a result it sits uncomfortably between light and meaningful.
I love the way Sam rejects the 50s idea that women have to put up with cheats. And the music is great!
Marple: At Bertram's Hotel (2007)
They messed up the plot and it's not an improvement
Add in nazis, stolen art, change the iconic characters and then further fiddle with the plot, and hello big mess. Horrible.
The Odd Couple (1968)
It hasn't aged well
I used to love this film and it still has classic scenes, (like the pigeon sisters, who were also the geese from Aristocats!) but overall, it just wasn't as funny as I remembered it.
Sleuth (1972)
Hugely disappointing
It started okay, with some lovely sparring and then... pointless costume changes and lots of shouty bad acting. I gave up after 40 mins. And I can't believe I'm saying this about two such amazing actors!
The Inspector Lynley Mysteries (2001)
Excellent but somehow depressing
Great stories, good acting and compelling but somehow I am so down after watching these.
Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom (2018)
Horrific and cruel
Dinos burned alive, tortured... just hideous. So disappointed. I won't be watching any more. Def not suitable for kids
Charlie Chan in London (1934)
Good fun
What's interesting about this film is that Charlie mentions the reconstruction of the crime is a French idea. Very true and back then, still not widely known.
Primal Fear (1996)
I was surprised to see how well this aged
A nice Saturday afternoon thriller, with the brilliant Edward Norton.
