Candy (2006)
Intense and unpleasant...I liked it
I was very moved by this film, I found it exhilarating and painful at the same time. All of the scenes powerfully encapsulate stages of addiction, the starry eyed beginning to the hopelessness and victimization of a need that cannot be satisfied, but must be obeyed both with the drugs and each other. The desperation of two people trying to make sense of a world that they have created and maintained through their drug use, the withdrawal from and eventual isolation from normal and eventually each other is all shown here sparing nothing. The sense that they have captured something beautiful and unique, well aware of the impending pitfall that awaits them is so beautifully portrayed here it is hard not to sympathize with all of the characters even at their most desperate; understanding where they come from and what drives them. Heath Ledger and Abbie Cornish work well together and my respect for Heath Ledger has been restored to full after some horrible roles post Two Hands.
Le temps du loup (2003)
What the hell just happened?
Killing the horse was memorable but not because of the context, they killed a horse on camera. Publicity? Anyhoo, I watched it, I watched it some more, I wanted it to jump out at me somehow, didn't happen. Mebbe my sensibilities are over burdened by Hollywood but there are films like Napolean Dynamite that come from nowhere and kinda go nowhere, difficult to describe in terms of plot and character development. This defies description in a lot of ways, sure it is set after the sewers of France have stopped working and all the water supplies have been polluted and I assume most of the world's population has died or failed to show up for filming but this seemed a little self indulgent for me, sure I like a thinking movie but this gave no reasons for anything, it seems a bit too open for me, I like a bit of a journey but this picked me up in the middle of nowhere, drove me through the middle of nowhere and you know where it dropped me off. It was painful to watch at times, it strained my eyes and ears sometimes simultaneously. Still might go check out his other films since they are well respected here. This film escapes a 1 because it did keep me on the edge of my seat waiting for anything to happen.
