Fatale (2020)
Well this was bad...
Saw the movie yesterday night. It's bad.
It succeeds in creating a lot of tension, it feels like a horror movie at time. That's pretty much the only positive.
The plot is improbable yet boring and easy to anticipate, there's hardly any plot twist you don't see coming, and the characters are all standard stereotypes. At some point I thought it was a bait-and-switch kind of story but no, it was just the most standard plot ever.
The movie is generally boring, it touches upon some ideas but never really dive into them. The final confrontation doesn't make any sense, it feels like they wanted to make a longer movie but realized they had to wrap it up and make it shorter.
South Park: Trapped in the Closet (2005)
Timeless fun - culturally significant
This episode should be seen from two different sides. As a South Park episode, it's one of the best. It's funny as well from start to finish, with some clever jokes that just refuse to get old.
And then you have the topic of Scientology. The show blew a hole in what used to be an unbreakable armor, de-facto exposing one of the biggest cult and scam to ever exist, and destroying their business model. The production team just went straight into battle and won, demonstrating how stupid and weak the cult actually was.
And it did all of that through meticulous research, connecting very well with Scientology members as well as the general public.
An instant classic.
La sociedad de la nieve (2023)
Powerful story, boring movie
The story itself is extremely powerful. The fact that it's very real makes it so much better, I honestly would think the whole thing is too much to maintain my suspension of disbelief, but IT DID really happen.
There's a lot of emphasis on a particular concern that made this whole accident famous worldwide, but I think they linger a bit too much on it.
In general, the issue is that this movie is incredibly sluggish and boring. I think they could have easily trimmed away 30 minutes and it would have worked much much better. The ending is definitely the best part of the movie, but the rest just refuses to get to the point.
House M.D.: Half-Wit (2007)
At least it tried
This episode is definitely better than the average season 3 doctor House. I liked how House gets interested in the patient: he's been shown to be always fascinated by music and every case that revolve around it.
I really didn't like the "cancer bomb" at the beginning of the episode, and I could tell something was off. I liked how the people around House reacted to the news. Ultimately I really really didn't like the resolution of this issue: House was faking it to get drugs.
It honestly feel like they came up with this plot from beginning to end rather than from end to beginning. It was meaningless in the end. Ouch.
House M.D.: One Day, One Room (2007)
Experimental episode
This episode is trying to do something different while taking away what's fun about this series: the puzzle.
I personally prefer this to any weekly villain, but I can't say it was executed well. Katheryn Winnick is gorgeous and plays well the character of a raped girl, but the episode is trying to be deep without really getting there.
The fun part is putting House in a situation where he's not comfortable, but honestly it gets old quickly. The first half of the episode is entertaining, the second part is really kinda meh, and the finale is weak.
Again, I understand what they were trying to do (or at least I think), but execution was meh.
House M.D.: Son of Coma Guy (2006)
Great episode, except for the recurring villain
This episode puts House, Willson and a patient all together in a small space where they are force to ask themselves questions. I loved that! They actual patient was barely present.
However, the investigation plot is disgusting. It's like this low-tier cop is looking for a way to get suspended with pay. He's been sneaking into the hospital in the past two episodes just to harass the staff and make ominous claims. He interrogates people without a lawyer being present.
All of this while an obvious conflict of interest is present. This whole deal should is just annoying to watch. Everytime it's brought back I can't help but to roll my eyes in disgust. I hope it goes away soon. House doesn't need an enemy. He needs puzzles.
House M.D.: Que Será Será (2006)
Idiots everywhere
This episode was kinda meh. The main patient is a fat ball with eyes and mouth that refuses treatment because of the assumptions related to his underlying condition. There's a nice twist at the end that makes it enjoyable. The patient himself is impossible to work with.
What I really don't like about House is a recurring villain. In the first season it was stupid, now it's even worst. We have a cop that could be easily framed for stalking and instead act like a freaking fed. It's so weird how these people seem to be so scary when in reality they are kinda laughable.
I hope he goes away soon so we can keep watching the cool part: the diagnosis.
The Simpsons: The Last Temptation of Homer (1993)
One of the strongest Simpson episode
Everything about this episode is nice.
The jokes are all on point, and seeing early Homer struggling with other woman has always been my favorite kind of episode.
It keeps it real and relatable, one of if not my favorite episode of the whole franchise. The story wraps up very well in a wholesome way, it's the kind of episode that is just timeless and always relevant.
The new character and guest star fits very well, it doesn't overstay its welcome.
The episode was an instant classic and one if the very high point of the simpsons, still discussed today and loved by fans. It's a good entry point for whoever wants to enjoy a classic episode.
Puss in Boots: The Last Wish (2022)
It met my very high expectations
The movie is very good.
The animation is a clear step-up from previous Dreamworks movie, they really looked at Spiderman Into the Spiderverse and just used the same approach. The movie uses a blend of 3D and 2D and it works beautifully. Everything is textured like a watercolor painting, different objects on screen move a different frame rate to make action scenes very compelling, love the camerawork as well with very dynamic shots and use of exaggerated proportions to enhance the viewing experience, with elements such as fire, speed lines and dust drawn on screen.
Story-wise it's a very simple but cool and well executed concept. There are three antagonist to this story: a straight up bad guy; a relatable party that just happens to have diverging interests to Puss, and finally the literal incarnation of Death. The movie is not long, pacing works, and in between they put legitimately funny moments.
Looking forward to whatever comes next!
House M.D.: Sex Kills (2006)
Shaking up the formula
I love episodes that in one way or another challenge the established formula.
This episode does exactly that, and I loved the twist. Normally, when House finds a solution 15 minutes into the episode, you know he's wrong.
But this time, he's right. The episode then changes, and House is faced with a different challenge: diagnose and cure a dead person so that he can use its organs to save his first patient.
The recurring theme of this episode is sex, and I like the take this episode has on the matter. It's the most un-sexualized sex-centric piece of media I've ever seen. I enjoyed it enough to write a review about it.
House M.D.: The Mistake (2005)
Chase is being mistreated again
This is one of those episode that decides to break off the regular format and I love it. As other reviews point out, it is constructed through flashbacks.
My personal high point for this episode is the finale. When House looks at Foreman, finding out he's going to be his supervisor, and just smiles at him. I love the dynamic between House and Foreman.
What I never liked is how the show started mistreating Chase since around half-season one.
The mistake Chase made was relatively small and made the right call by simply recalling the patient only one hour after the mistake was made in the first place.
What didn't work out is how he dealt with it during this episode. If he came forward from the very first moment, he would have never been sued in the first place. Why is he consistently idiotic I just can't understand. He deserves better.
Mob Psycho 100: Divine Tree 1 ~The Founder Appears~ (2022)
Masterful ending
The episode builds up on the previous one to set up a very interesting situation.
As per the theme of this show, Mob is facing increasingly big challenges for which his powers can only take him so far.
An eerie feeling soak the entire episode. It is incredibly unsettling in a very good way. The ending is simply touching to see. It really sets this show apart.
There's not much left to say without risking to go into any spoiler, in the end it's just 20 minutes. If you haven't watch the show, I highly recommend it. This is going to be the final season, it has a sense of finality to it as well, it's probably the best time to hop on board the mob psycho train.
Mob Psycho 100: Divine Tree 3 ~Dimple Is~ (2022)
Amazing epsiode
This episode really flexes its muscles both in terms of story and animation.
From a technical standpoint, some sequences made by Yutaka Nakamura in this episode are simply amazing, truly elevating the story to a different level.
From a plot and execution, this episode is just a carousel of emotion. With the episode 4 and 5, this concludes a an incredibly emotional, thoughtful and ultimately amazing journey.
I'm honestly surprised by how this show manages to shift its tone in a matter of minute, truly putting you at the edge of your seat multiple time.
In terms of quality of the sequences presented, this probably still doesn't beat the Mogami fight from season 2, but the stakes added on top of it probably makes it the most invested conflict I've seen so far in the show.
How I Met Your Father: Pilot (2022)
Painful to watch.
This was horrible, I wonder how I will ever be able to get back the time I wasted in this.
Terrible acting, it feels like looking at a kid school show.
The recorded laugh track helped me understand when this was supposed to be funny, but it just wasn't. It was horrible. Whoever wrote this should consider a different line of work. I can't believe this went through a whole production process.
Save yourself the pain and do literally anything else.
Shingeki no Kyojin: Memories of the Future (2022)
Another incredible episode
Just like the previous episode, this one also proves how MAPPA is really giving it all by enhancing the manga, pushing it to new heights.
The direction, the music, the small added contents, it all comes together to create a tv series that will go down in history as one of the best.
I particularly liked the touching and yet incredibly ominous moment at the end of the episode. So many different feelings thrown at the viewer together.
Rick and Morty: Rickmurai Jack (2021)
One of the best episodes
I didn't like Season 5, but this episode was simply amazing. It renewed my love for Rick and Morty. It's amazing how much cool stuff they can pack in 20 minutes.
Shingeki no Kyojin: Two Brothers (2022)
Really solid episode
This episode is flawless. The pacing, the music, the animation, the voice acting... It all comes together to give birth to peak television.
As a manga reader, I appreciate it also as an adaptation. I feel like this is not just a transposition of the manga, but an improvement, it elevates the story to even higher ground.
To me, it's a great episode both from a production standpoint as well as for its contents.
Dragon Ball Z (1996)
The one that started them all
Dragon Ball Z invented the shonen formula. If you watched My Hero Academia, or One Piece, or Naruto, or even Death Note, you've watched the spawn of this one. By today's standard is not really good. After the Frieza's arc, things start to get bad. It was a manga without a clear direction, in which choices were made on a weekly schedule, based on character popularity and editor's choices. It is a product of its time. Judging it by today's standard wouldn't be fair. The show itself suffers from bad pacing due to the fact that was made with the manga, so it had to wait for it. The "Kai" version is far better in this regard. Music-wise, I think that the original score is much better than the american dub.
