The Meg (2018)

Deep Blue Sea is my fav shark movie and this borrowed a lot of small details.

It's everything you expect with only a few decent misdirects. The premise is solid, the exposition is simple and the pace is fast. Loved the opening too.

Cast: I actually really liked the cast, Rainn Wilson is awesome in everything he does... definitely elevated the movie.

Story: Of course, the whole movie I'm yelling "that's impossible!" But you just have to suspend your disbelief and enjoy this one. Everyone tries to be the hero, just as you expect. But at least there's a couple instances where a character points out the ridiculous plot points in the movie.

VFX: Sometimes I wonder why they don't just fully animate movies like this, because 75 percent of the movie already is lol but you can tell they paid top dollar for the effects. They're not bad at all, I just feel like some of the shots have too many composited images....

7/10 excited to watching the even-more-ridiculous sequel.

Incredibly simple 3rd installment
5 August 2023
I was expecting more, especially after seeing all of the 8 star reviews and higher. Will Poulter was a great addition but severely underused in my personal opinion. I think the performances feel rushed. The Rocket Raccoon ark seems to try to tug at your heart strings wayyyyy too much... and ultimately makes the the humor fall super flat.

All of the supporting Guardians really seem pointless throughout the whole movie. The space anus was kind of a trip. I think the movie could have been much worse and to be honest. I like this movie and could see myself watching it again at some point in the future but it's not a film I can highly respect.

Needed more risk and bigger moments... idk... just a lot of it seemed pretty unoriginal but with crazy backgrounds and settings to try to distract you from how boring and generic the plot actually is. Which is fine, it doesn't need to have the greatest plot to still be entertaining. I think Chris Pratt carried the movie. Guardians 1 is still my favorite lol.

Spaghetti Horror....
22 May 2023
This is a great example of an IP landing in the wrong production company's hands.

In some ways, this movie has some pretty great animatronics and practical effects... but the cast, direction, cinematography and story seems made for TV. A lot of the movie just feels corny and obviously they kept it PG-13 to gain a wider audience.

The budget should have been doubled and handled by a larger studio. There were a lot of corners cut and I think that director Paul Anderson was held back from making something a lot more original and shocking... I'd rather watch Event Horizon any day! There is not enough blood, gore, or graphic content in this movie to contend with any of the predecessors of Alien and Predator. It takes away from the brutal nature of these alien creatures and the lore as a whole.

Where the movie redeems itself: fight scenes, animatronics and practical effects were well done, regardless of the PG-13 rating. It's not too scary for a younger audience and might be a better gateway for a newer crowd that aren't ready for the skinned bodies and chest-popping aliens.

I just know this had so much potential, especially with Paul Anderson at the helm. Lance Hendrickson is always awesome. Don't pass it up if you find it streaming somewhere but make sure you have plenty of popcorn!

Don't even get me started on the sequel lol.

That '90s Show (2023– )

Left me wanting more... of the original cast
19 January 2023
I'll admit I was skeptical to watch this but I'm glad I did. I was a huge fan of the original series. Red and Kitty play a huge part in the series and that's what keeps me watching. Some of the other cameos were obviously much needed fan service and I'm happy to see some of those familiar favorites return.

As far as capturing the 90's goes, I'm not really feeling the immersion. Maybe that will change as the series continues.

The new characters are... a little cringey but not the worst to be honest. The show overall has enough funny moments to keep me entertained.

The sets they recreated are awesome as well. Production did a great job.

I don't doubt that there will be another season ordered of this.

Everything was amazing... besides the entire story
7 January 2023
From incredible acting to brilliant cinematography, The Pale Blue Eye has all the ingredients of a great movie... besides the story. I could spend all day praising Bale and Melling. These two were captivating enough to keep my attention for the 2hr+ run time. Unfortunately the plot twisted and twisted and twisted until all hope of a great movie were wrung dry.

Around the second act of the movie it becomes quite the snooze fest. This would have been much better as just a straight up revenge movie, rather than a long winded attempt at a mystery/thriller. There was absolutely no shock to the final reveals or twists. It was pretty disappointing to say the least, since it was marketed as a thriller.

Also, there is one CGI sequence in the movie that was so bad it made my wife and I burst out with laughter! Besides that, the rest of the movie looked aesthetically awesome and believable.

5/10 stars for the exceptional acting and cinematography.

Thinner (1996)
7/10
Tom Holland pulled it off
2 January 2023
Thinner: a Stephen King adaption that always gets a bad a wrap. I read this novel when I was 10 and it always stuck with me... the themes on greed, gluttony, and guilt.... And revenge. I've always seen this as a good adaption of the novel and don't understand the hate. Director Tom Holland is consistent with the pacing in this. It's not a long movie to sit through but it sure is packed pretty tight. One big thing about this movie I really think stands out is the special FX and costume design. They couldn't have done a better job for the time. Also, the casting is great. Maybe not the most notable actors but there are some really good performances here.

Obviously these ~2h adaptions of novels have to leave so much out. I understand the frustration when a theme or character or understory gets left on the cutting room floor... I think it should have also been a little more "rated R" for the screen but that's for us nerds to have with our books! And of course there's a few cheesy moments in the picture that are fun to laugh at... it is a movie from the mid 90's so of course there's cheese lol

Is it the greatest adaption from Stephen King? No. Is it the worse? Far from it. As of Jan 2023, it's on HBO Max, great popcorn movie to watch with your partner or friends!

Clerks III (2022)
5/10
Missing something
2 January 2023
Clerks III.... Not a comedy. By a long shot, though there were quite a few attempts.... Definitely a personal story coming from Kevin Smith in many ways. I love his filmmaking. But Clerks III felt rushed. I feel like this was a missed opportunity to get huge laughs and quotes we could spout off to our friends for years to come. And we all know Kev is capable of that. The editing wasn't the greatest either which kinda ruined some of jokes, especially in the first act. The second act picks up a little speed but overall is too much of an ode to the first Clerks. (Which made me just want to watch the first one lol)

The good: Super low budget and they did excellent with what they had. Loved the nods and breaking the fourth wall that are a staple in Kevin's films. Hilarious cameos. I just wish that the story and joke writing could have trumped the sheer star power of the cameos and nods.

I'm really hoping Kevin moves on from sequels and reboots and does something original again soon! He's one of the most clever filmmakers out there and I can't put his movies down.

I'll take Rob Zombie's franchise over this any day
16 October 2022
Pacing was all over the place. First half of the movie is POINTLESS to sit through by the end of the film. I actually enjoyed Halloween Kills, where it's Michael against all of Haddonfield. Halloween Ends was a huge step down in terms of stakes and payoff. There's a couple memorable kills in this movie, however, absolutely 0 scare factor to any of it. Would have loved to see flashbacks of Michael in the Sanatorium after he arrived to fill up some of the movie rather than this long winded build up to NOTHING. Would rather not spoil the movie but how will they ever be able to mend this storyline, or create more Michael Myers movies? I'm guessing we will just get another reboot. People hate on the Rob Zombie Halloween, but at least it had vision, added some originality, and was actually scary throughout.

Hocus Pocus 2 (2022)

8 Minute Walgreen Advertisement
1 October 2022
Cool that Disney got the original actresses to play the witches again but the story was incredibly boring and predictable. Hard to understand what audience they were targeting because the original movie has many fans who are now adults but the writing seemed like it was made for 5 year olds.

I think they should have targeted their original audience from Hocus Pocus. My wife and I love the original and we both disliked this sad attempt at a sequel.

Also, I know this is a straight-to-streaming movie and doesn't have the luxury of hitting big numbers in the box office, but the product placement in these straight-to-streaming movies are getting OUT OF HAND. No way me and my wife just got conned into watching an 8 minute Walgreens ad!

Best movie of the 21st century so far
25 August 2022
I'm just incredibly thankful for this film. The flying and stunts are jaw dropping. There has never been such a daring movie before Top Gun: Maverick. I was on the edge of my seat for 2/3rds of the movie. The drama and dialogue actually felt meaningful. The opening scene had me floored! It's no secret that Tom is the king of action but Miles Teller's performance stole the movie for me. 10/10! I will be watching for decades to come.

Not fully understanding the hype
8 August 2022
Trying not to compare to previous Predator films but this one seems pretty derivative. No twists, generic plot, with a ton of CGI. This could have been a great film with less dialogue and with more on screen special fx. The rendered fight scenes and gore carry no weight (like most modern action movies).

The casting was great, loved the setting of the movie and I think there could be many great Predator films set through different periods of time.

Wasted opportunity
14 May 2022
There are many things to dislike about this remake. The end feels pointless, the dialogue is soapy, and Charlie just felt like a side character. The first act of the movie takes up too much time, which ends up leaving the final act to feel like it was squeezed in and cut short. The special fx were pretty good and the score was good but when you pair that with a bad script, a huge opportunity is wasted. I highly recommend the 1984 version.

Covid Comedy...
6 April 2022
Not a bad movie by any stretch. Really solid cast and original premise... I think this will age well but covid comedy is not very funny at the moment. In 10 years, we will be happy to watch this movie and have a good nostalgic laugh, I'm sure. Apatow rarely makes a flop. I'm giving it a 5/10 right now, but I'm estimating an 8/10 in the next decade.

The Shape is unstoppable.
16 October 2021
Intense, fast paced, and filled with gruesome imagery. This movie does a great job at capturing the Myers "universe". It leaves no question unanswered for fans of the previous installment and opens the door for what I believe will be the true finale to the Michael Myers storyline.

I think the writing in this one played out with more originality, while many horror movies stick to a grid that we are all too familiar with. This one was more artistic in a dark way, lots of close up shots and great cinematography.

Halloween Kills matches the tone of the original Halloween perfectly. There was more of a seriousness and reality to the characters in this one. Many character flaws are exposed, which is risky but serves the story well. There is also more context given to why Michael Myers is so hard to kill. The Shape is unstoppable in this film and I can't recommend it more.

Will be watching this again very soon. 10/10.

Question: How did this get green-lit?
29 August 2021
Answer: the entire movie, every scene and nearly every frame has product placement. They weren't even being sneaky about it lmao. There should be a disclaimer at the beginning of the movie.

Worst acting of 2021
12 April 2021
You could have paid 5 year olds to give better performances. The lines are poorly written and poorly delivered. You could have also paid 5 year olds to come up with a better story. Also, the comedic attempts are nothing but failure and poor timing. I was at least hoping to have some laughs. Super cringe throughout. Some of the worst costume design ever. I never want to see a Slayer t-shirt disrespected like this again.

Watch it again! (2020 review)
9 December 2020
Giving it a 10/10 rating because it deserves WAY more than many of the 1-4 star average that it receives.

IMDb should do a better job sorting reviews - seeing how the vast majority of these reviews were submitted at the release (in 2008) nearly 13 years ago by a bunch of fans who got the more family-friendly version of Jones than they expected.

If you are watching this movie in 2020+, let me assure you that this movie tells another GREAT Indiana Jones story and I would regard as a Spielberg classic (along with the originals). Indiana Jones usually tackles religious artifacts, but this movie takes it a step further! I would even argue that it has more originality than The Last Crusade... but they are all great films nonetheless. I urge naysayers to watch this movie again! It does not disappoint!

Absolutely HILARIOUS
21 March 2020
Surprised this doesn't have more followers. I give this show a 10/10 because the laughs are non-stop, the writing is genius, and the guest stars are legendary. I've been watching since the "YouTube" days of this show and it has never been more relevant. I'm serious! Every line is funny! Jimmy Tatro is an amazing talent and so is every character in this show. You better believe that these up and coming actors and actresses will lead the industry some day!

Bio-Dome (1996)
8/10
Absolute Gem of the 90's
5 January 2020
Do yourself a favor and ignore the negative reviews. Most of them were written 15-20 years ago at this point.

Make your own assessment! First of all, this movie is free (with ads) on YouTube.

I've watched the movie a couple times when I was a kid in the 90's and again a couple decades later. The humor really holds up. The cast is brilliant and Shore/Baldwin are comedy geniuses. Bio-dome has such an outlandish (yet original) plot that I'd STILL prefer over the majority of comedies made in the last 10 years.

The movie is full of satire/spoof/reference humor that I think people misinterpreted for adult humor. I put this style of comedy in the Dude, Where's my Car? Or Bill and Ted style. Two idiots find themselves in a situation far beyond their intelligence - which is the golden formula. I mean, people liked Forest Gump which is the same thing with one less idiot. All jokes aside, Bio-Dome was ahead of it's time and I wish there were more comedies like it these days.

Godzilla: King of The Most Stand-in Actors of All Time
4 November 2019
Maybe not, but ranks very high on the list. Godzilla: King of The Monsters is basically just a reaction video where many different actors are shown in close-up shots while they witness unfathomably large creatures topple hundreds of buildings and kill thousands. Now THAT'S filmmaking.

Ask yourself: Do you like multi-trillion-dollar underwater mega facilities? Multi-trillion-dollars of super jets and aircraft? Do you like corny CGI in every imaginable shot possible? Do you like scripts that are preformed like they were written by ten-year-old? If so, this is DEFINITELY the movie for you.

One of my biggest problems with movies like this is that we've seen all of this happen before in action movies. Too formulated!

The "film" (animation) is:

-50% Reaction shots -10% Actual god-sized monsters fighting in slow-mo -10% Super unrealistic ideals and moral compasses -10% Stranger Things -10% Nods toward another sequel (Godzilla Vs. Kong) -7% Actually cool action sequences -3% Mexican standoffs.

Oh yeah and 1% logic. Can't forget the logic!

Refreshing Horror/Thriller that is a MUST see!
25 October 2019
My jaw hit the floor. All I can say is WOW! Great storytelling. This is one of the rare movies that makes me want to watch again as soon as the credits rolled. I'm sure some may have found the film to be slow at times or slightly confusing. But that's the beauty of this gem! Very unpredictable. And yes- the jump scares are good along with a really good score to back it! Do yourself a favor and AVOID SPOILERS.

Claustrophobic, bizarre, chilling.
7 October 2019
I am a huge fan of Stephen King and I am always pleased when his work is adapted to screen. One thing this story does well with is holding back on the foreshadowing and letting the viewer puzzle the mystery together. I have never read the short story but this adaption sure has King written all over it. In The Tall Grass really feels closely related to Children of The Corn. I recommend this movie to any Stephen King fan. It is much darker and much more twisted than I expected.
