Becoming Jane (2007)

Wonderful Watch
5 November 2007
Warning: Spoilers
I absolutely loved this film. The acting, the drama, the sets and clothing indicating that era. It was everything I loved in a costume drama. Filled with tear worthy scenes and brilliant scripting, it kept me gripped from beginning to end. Anne Hathaway gave an Oscar winning performance as the young novelist Jane Austin who finds true love with Mr Lefroy, but finds that life as a funny way of panning out. This was a worthy watch. Thoroughly enjoyable and heartwarming as well as sad in parts I would definitely recommend this being watched, especially by Jane Austin fans as this gives us a bit of a glimpse into the life. This is definitely a film I can watch again and again.

Not bad, but not Good either!
4 November 2007
Warning: Spoilers
This is a film which isn't so bad, but definitely not one to be yelling about either. The acting was quite good in it, introducing some new talent and some old, but the storyline left little to talk about. The dialogue was poor, there were parts in the film which didn't make sense and the killings left you uncaring. It wasn't as if I felt for any of the people in this film, I made myself watch it until the end so I could see what happened, but I wasn't majorly impressed. The twist at the end didn't leave me satisfied or yearning for me, I was just happy that the film was over.

On the plus side, this was a good Urban film, full of good music, good acting and good camera-work.

Don't waste your time on this movie
3 November 2007
Warning: Spoilers
From the beginning of the film, I knew that I wasn't going to enjoy this meagre attempt at horror. Filled with over the top scripting and unbelievably cringe-worthy special effects, the film was hard to watch, but being a Friday night with nothing else on television I decided to give it a go and to see whether it was any better further on through the film. IT wasn't! The acting was terrible, there wasn't one person who I recognised, but this would have been okay if they had have been convincing as their characters. I wasn't bothered when they were picked off one by one, I spent the 'scary' scenes noting what was wrong with it.....'certainly one stone a few planks of wood wouldn't strip the skin off his face'......'that girl drowned quite quickly' and 'why would that guy spit up his intestines' There was no consistency....and no major love for the plot. Luckily this film was watched online so I didn't waste any money on this heap of tripe.

The Woods (2006)
The Woods!
8 October 2007
Warning: Spoilers
When the movie initially started, I hoped that my first judgement would change. The film looked dated and unappealing. I continued to watch it never the less....When Heather was shown around the school, I got the feel of Magdalene-esquire type film and slowly started to slip into the movie, I was getting more engrossed than I would have anticipated....and then...she cut her finger and the whole weird tenseness came with it and I found myself frowning at the film...I hoped things would make more sense....But I was starting to feel for the character, especially when her mother and father pulled away without a look back. In films like this I always tend to keep my eyes peeled for actresses/actors whom I recognised so it was nice to see a few familiar faces. Before I knew it, I was hooked...and watching with my tongue out...(i do that when I concentrate) and waiting to see what happened next! I didn't necessarily find the dramatic bits that scary...but It was definitely worth a good watch, if only for the feel good moments, like when she made friends with Marcy! The film had a huge air of mystery about it and kept you wanting more. One things for sure...Those woods looked damn creepy, I would have never have gone into them.....that sheriff was brave! Overall, I would recommend this film, the ending was utterly unsatisfying......

Smashing Film
8 October 2007
Warning: Spoilers
This had me laughing from beginning to end, It was so funny. I have always loved Ben Stiller's films anyway...Not only is he really funny, but I kind of find him cute too....Anyways...The film was brilliant, taking him back to what he does best, which is clowning around and making people laugh. THis was a comedy with a twist, there were a few jump out of your seat moments and this really made the film what it was. It even had an hint of romance. Being similar to Jumanji, It was good to see Robin williams in this film, although after recognising him, It was easy to believe him as the character he was playing. He is an actor who can play many roles and seem different in everyone...Whether it be a doctor, an alien or a manic photo developer. THis was a great film and a must see. If you like a film which makes you laugh and jump but still gives you the feel good feeling at the end.....Then watch this...

SPOILERS.....A good scary flick!
8 October 2007
Warning: Spoilers
This wasn't a bad film to watch at all. With its jump out of your seat moments and nail biting terror. The film had you hooked from the beginning and we immediately started feeling for the characters as they feel their way through the story. The child is simply adorable as the tot who can see more than what an adult can. He is the one to notice that something isn't quite right in the house, but being as innocent as he is, he sees these beings as friends and laughs at their antics. Its a film which left me satisfied and covered all of my questions, inc Huh? What the? Where from? And Whats That?.....It definitely made me jump a few times, although I denied this of course to my husband...I didn't want to look like a wimp now, did i? I would definitely recommend watching this film, its a good watch and definitely worth the sit down.

Captivity - Not worth the watch
8 October 2007
Warning: Spoilers
I was definitely disappointed in this film. When I saw that it starred Elisha cuthbert then I imagined a high budget film with well written script and heart stopping action, but I guess I was typecasting her because of her role in 24. The scenes are set well in this movie and at times I did jump when the tension was fuelled, but overall I didn't enjoy this film. The dialogue was poor, the acting was the same and the film had a edge to it, which was hard to understand. The two men were kidnapping these women and subjecting them to terror and pain before killing them, getting off on the fact that they had 100% control of them. But one question I have is.....What was the guy at the beginning of the film all about? Why was he not explained? If these guys preyed on only women, then what was he? Why was he there? And this is the question I am still asking now, because the film left me with unanswered questions. The copper got up in the kitchen, why didn't he reach for his radio and call for help before he got up.....Hasn't he been trained in these matters before? The film moved in a weird way and made the viewer feel ill at ease at times. For something which had a good publicity campaign, I expected more.

Just My Luck (2006)
9/10
Great Film
28 August 2007
Warning: Spoilers
Loved the film, loved the idea, loved the romance, loved the comedy and loved the music. This was watched by me and my sister in the cinema and now after watching it another 3-4 times since then, I can still say that I love this movie. THe concept is good, the idea of two individual people, made for one another, but completely different when it comes to luck. Lohan is a happy lucky young lady, who is envied by her friends as she gets luck after luck. From being promoted in her job to dating an eligible bachelor, she has everything a girl could want from an extravagantly beautiful apartment to expanding wardrobes. She is living everyones dream life. Pine on the other hand is not so lucky, in fact, he is nowhere near. Trying to get the band he is managing noticed, he comes across many funny, comical moments, such as picking up a 5 dollar bill which has been used to pooper scoop. THis and many other bad things occur until the two meet at a Masquerade party and inevitably kiss on the dance floor, switching fates.

From the beginning I liked this film, Lohan (until most recently) has been one of my favourite teen actresses since I watched Mean Girls and Confessions of a teenage drama queen. THis is a brilliant chick flick and definitely should be watched by all.

Hostel Part II
27 August 2007
Warning: Spoilers
I have given this lower points than the first film I reviewed because I feel that despite the more detailed story then the real winner was the original. The film worked in explaining the story to us, but giving us a tour of this unbelievable world, where people bid to kill others. Rich men and women bid on people from other countries, depending on their nationality, depends on how much they go for. These people are then captured whilst they are holidaying and are locked up in a dilapidated old building where they are tortured brutally to their deaths. Its a highly believable story and one which scared me from the word go. The thought of being targeted in this way, when you alone in a country you know nothing about, when your defences and your confidence are already low. Its too much to imagine and this is what helps the film to grip you and thrill you, scare you into submission. There are scenes that you long to hide from, but you find it impossible to look away. Like the other film, it brings you enough blood and gore to satisfy any horror loving fan, but I much prefer the first film, because although the second offered more scares, then you can only have too much of a good thing, before it all becomes too familiar.

Surprised
27 August 2007
Warning: Spoilers
Picking this up in the video shop, I wasn't too sure whether it would be as good as it seemed. Thinking it to be one of those badly written thrillers then I reluctantly decided to give it a go. Why Not? I had free movie rental vouchers, so I may as well! On watching it, I was impressed by the writing and the direction of the film. It wasn't just another bad shot at shocking the audience, It as actually a good film. Filmed with tense scenes and pretty surprising twists, it had you on the edge of your seat. I managed to work out what was going to happen just has Flockharts character did. The scary looking nurse who was clinging to the children in the hospital and causing them injuries so they were prevented from leaving. It was tense and exciting from the start. Calista played a good role, one which was miles away from her Abby Mcbeal days, showing just how well she can perform.

Good Horror, believable story
27 August 2007
Warning: Spoilers
The thing that drew me to this film is the fact that it was directed by a brilliant director. Quentin Tarantino always delivers with his films and this is just another one where he scores big time. The story is strangely believable because the bad guys are ordinary people just like you and me, but people who are looking at getting kicks from killing others. The bloody horror that unfolds is one that has your choking back the vomit. On watching this film for a third time, I watched other peoples reactions around me and their faces as more grizzly gore appears on the screen. Its unnerving and you feel every scream as the victims are tortured beyond belief in the most grotesque way. It is a definite hit and one which should not watched by the faint hearted or people who are that little bit squeamish. That being said, I have never winced much at horror films until I watched this one. The unforgettable eye scene shall stay with me forever. I still cover my eyes now! One to watch!!!

The Karen Carpenter Story (1989 TV Movie)

Brilliant look at a wonderful Icon
23 August 2007
On watching this film, I was amazed at how media perception can mould a persons opinion of a celebrity. Karen Carpenter was a carefree, but very unconfident young lady, whose wonderful voice helped her and her brother Richard to soar the charts with wonderful songs. As with all celebrities of today, they were often criticised about their music as well as their looks, styles, etc. THis had a huge effect on Karen who raged a battle against her eating and drastically lost weight, which eventually caused her death. This heart felt film was not initially something which I would have thought of watching. But on starting to view it, then I was hooked. In the same way that the Tina Turner story does, then this film enlightens you and allows you to see into the young performers life. The acting was superb and even after nearly 20 years after it was made, then the directional and the dialogue are still entertaining.

I would recommend this to anyone who hasn't yet watched it. It is amazingly accurate and emotionally charged.

Warning: Spoilers
On watching this film, I was amazed and interested in the accurate facts and details that were noted in this film about William Wilderforce and the abolition of slave trading, which he fought endlessly to destroy. This was a brilliant film, one which i enjoyed from beginning to end. The history was told brilliantly and I really felt for the poor victims of this thoughtless trade. There weren't any faults to this film, I loved the acting, the directing and the dialogue...most of all, I loved the opportunity to go back and experience what it was like back when this was coming about, nearly 200 years after the clause came into place. I would definitely recommend this film to anyone.

Warning: Spoilers
I wasn't so impressed with this film, finding it quite tiresome and plain. The plot line was interesting, a kid creating his own college and enrolling hundreds of kids, but the laughs were few and far between. The jokes weren't really funny and i didn't bust a gut at any of the scenes. The characters weren't intriguing and I didn't feel for any of them, even the dawky, fat kid with glasses who tried to enter the frat group. It was a good first watch, but it didn't blow me away and its not one that I would recommend. Comparing it to other films in the same genre, ie, American Pie is just cruel, because there is a film which was laugh-a-plenty. This ACCEPTED failed to raise a smile!

Disturbia
10 August 2007
Warning: Spoilers
Me and my husband settled back to watch this film and I was mostly pleased by what I saw. I wasn't expecting a lot, because of the not so famous actors and the seemingly plain plot line, but once I started to watch the film, then I got really absorbed in what was going on and wanted to get to the bottom of what was happening just like the main characters. The tension was well placed and the acting was well done. I did however feel that there were moments in the film that didn't match the pattern/movement of the film, like the love scene for example. This took us right away from the tense plot and the nail biting moments and spat us into a teen romance and before we had chance to get used to this twist in movie style then we were thrown back into the thick of the action. This is my only downside to the movie though. I felt it was filmed well, acted well and written well and overall then it was a very good watch and I would definitely recommend this to any keen thriller fan.

An old film revisited!
10 August 2007
Warning: Spoilers
When I first watched this film, then I was 18 and I had started dating my NOW hubby, Stewart. The cinema was empty, there was just me and him, we obviously hogged the backseats, but I remember feeling quite concerned at the lack of people wanting to watch the film and was contemplating the waste of money for our tickets. Stew has never has and never will be a lovey-chicky film, but he went along for me. As the film started I was wondering how the story was going to pan out, but within 10 minutes I guessed that there would be trouble and love loss before finally getting to them being all happy and loved up at the end. It was the journey to that stage that I didn't know about, what was going to happen to these characters? Was Al going to get the girl? Was Imogen slightly stuck up? Overral I enjoyed the film and the romance was enough to keep me glued, but I wasn't really too bothered about the characters. There was no real interest there. Sure, I wanted them to get together and finally live forever together, but I wasn't completely bothered if they didn't. I felt the concept for this story was good, but i wouldn't necessarily say that the film was filmed brilliantly. It kept me entertained like any other romantic film, but it didn't give me feel-good-vibes which we all expect from a film of this genre.

Since then I have purchased the film on DVD. It is nearly 7 years on, but I still kind of feel the same as when I first watched it. The story is good and imaginative, but its not necessarily a good story for the big screen.

This film was amazing to watch, it had me tense from the word go. The acting was sublime and so too was the writing and direction. There are so many horror films these days that fail to appeal because of the heavy-load of blood and gore, but this was scary and tension filled without having to shed much. For someone who has read Stephen King's novels for a long time and who has been disappointed in the past, when his work has been blemished on screen, I would say that this is by far the best one on screen. Its everything you would want to watch. And its scary too! There were many occasions during this film that I was reaching for something to shield my eyes. This is definitely worth a watch, and especially for chiller and Stephen King fans alike.

Wind Chill
18 July 2007
Warning: Spoilers
On watching this film I was amazed to find that it was quite enjoyable. It was easy to expect a bad experience what with the lack of mega-tastic effects or recognisable actors, but the overall feel was not unpleasant. There were not many jump-out-of-your-seat moments, but the tension was held from the beginning with the guy (Ashton Holmes) appearing to be a little creepy. From the start I was eager for him to be the bad guy, but this was short-lived when I realised that he was just a stalkerish guy who was spoiling for time with the films lead lady (Emily Blunt).

The acting was good and the script in my opinion was really well written, but it failed to raise my expectations for a thriller/horror genre. Where was the ultimate final fight with the bad guy? Where were the many shocks and twists? Why did the film end so unsatisfactorily? For this type of film one would expect for the nemesis to come crashing wildly through the trees for one final battle before being banished for eternity. Okay, I am getting a bit far from the point, but what I am meaning to say is that this film failed to make me say 'WOW...that was one good film'. There were no final discussions with the husband about what happened and where and trying to get my head around it all.

The doomed growing relationship of the two main characters was obvious from the start. And the outcome was easy to see.

I have rated this film a 6, because i think that the acting was brilliant for these two people, especially Ashton's role, which I felt was played brilliantly. I also think that the tension was at the right level, but it was the lack of excitement and jumps which has taken the points off.

I would recommend watching this film, because it may be to other peoples tastes.
