The Deuce (2017)
Great except for one thing
Not sure if this is a spoiler...but do we really need TWO James Francos??!! One is more than enough. How many times do we have to see James Franco playing James Franco??!! Maggie is great. I wish there were two of her. Everyone else in the cast captures the style and feeling of the period. Could have been a really great show - They captured NY in the 70's but Franco's acting is way over the top...should have been played by Gary Oldman or Tom Hardy (he played 2 brothers in the Crays - and they were completely different)
The Leftovers (2014)
Much ado about nothing...
I can't begin to list all of the annoying things this show has to offer. So much work for so little result. It has weird religious overtones and I really don't feel like trying to connect dots that don't really exist. It's the Emperor's New Clothes...everyone here seems to see the Emperor dressed but to me, he's stark naked. They want ten lines for me to submit my little review...so I'll tell you about a psychology experiment I did when I was in College: I had a pile of forks and a pile of squares of tissue paper. The volunteers were asked to take some forks and some paper and wrap them. Then they were to bring then to me and take some more. When they gave them to me I would simply unwrap the forks and dump them back in the pile. The object of the experiment - much like the Leftovers - was to see how long they would stick with this useless task. While many of them left some stayed all day...and I imagine they would still be there now wrapping forks. That's how I feel about The Leftovers.
1313: Hercules Unbound! (2012)
Beats Cloud 9 from Outer Space!
This is the worst movie I've ever seen. There is no story, no acting...it's shot from the strangest angles...I spent most of it (before going to ff) trying to figure out where it was shot. Of course, Malibu! (I don't think that's a spoiler) It was worse that the old 60's AMA soft core gay flics. The filmmaker was either very short or filmed on his knees - most shots were taken from below. It was listed as sci-fi adventure - quite a stretch! The Texas tattoo and lousy wrestling in a crumbling hotel/brothel had potential but I'm afraid the film maker was too enthralled with his mediocre body boys to even consider making a good funny movie. Chelsea Rae Bernier could hardly speak her lines...but who noticed? - my jaw couldn't drop any further than the sight of her 'costume'. The invisible Lou Ferrigno as "Zeus (as Lou Ferrigno)" was probably best left off camera...Director cum Cinematographer David DeCoteau (do I smell Canada?) has had some fairly better attempts "Leatherjacket Love Story" limps to mind. But this one is a real stinker!
The Kids Are All Right (2010)
A great movie - especially for Hollywood
I really loved this film. It accurately portrays the intricacies of a long time gay relationship. Annette Bening is amazing - as always. I can just sit back an watch her act - she's by far the best American actress. I wonder about two of the characters: Jai and Clay. They both seem to be gay. Jai, a very pretty, sensitive boy, refuses to sleep with Joni and Clay, a classic homophobe with obvious gay issues, taunting Laser. Tho Laser may not be gay...Clay sure seems to be wrestling with the issue. Their characters, however, seem cut off in mid-stream. Was this a 'Hollywood' decision? Both characters represent qualities/issues that resonate with the gay community, and I wonder why more was not made of them. None of this spoils the movie for me. I hope they win the Oscar, but i fear that America is not adult enough to face the realities dealt with in this mature movie.
