Joker (I) (2019)

Excellent Movie
19 October 2019
I really really liked this movie. It's very well acted, paced, directed, composed, and is overall one of my favorite movies of the year. Joaquin Phoenix steals the show again with what I think is the best performance of the year. The pacing is slow but the movie still manages to keep you entertained and on edge. All the camera work and music and sound design and set design came together really well. The script and the dialogue was also pretty good though it's not what makes this movie so great. It's just a very well executed movie.

But, it's not a perfect movie, and there are some noticeable problems. The biggest complaint I've seen with this movie is that it's very similar and takes a lot from Taxi Driver and other Martin Scorsese films. And though I also wanted a more originality in the writing, I think it still works really well for this movie and for the characters. One thing I also noticed was the sometimes in your face feel of the movie, I definitely thought movie a bit more subtlety in it's presentation. The thing is, I think all these problems stem form the fact that Todd Phillips is very inexperienced in making these types of movies. But for every moment that highlights that, theirs a moment that shows his and potential once he becomes more experienced.

There's also some other things that I liked that I think make this a 9/10 rather than an 8/10, particularly how violent and disturbing it was willing to be. And overall it's just a really really good movie.

Cool idea, but not a lot more.
11 October 2019
Now, I know a lot of people really don't like this movie, and for good reasons. But I kind of enjoyed it. Most of the acting was good, the jokes were alright, and the idea of one big shootout for a movie was pretty interesting and I kind of wanted it to work.

But the reality is, having a movie just be a shootout doesn't for the most substance filled and interesting movie. And you can tell that it doesn't work in a lot of ways. Mainly, the movie kind of gets drawled out padded with what feels like the same scene happening over and over again. Hence, the middle chunk of this movie is kind of boring. Basically, the movie's shootout starts and it's pretty interesting, some characters switch sides and you think some of the characters could die, but then all the characters get shot like once in like the knee or something so they're injured but not dead, and then the rest of the middle chunk of the movie is just people shooting and crawling with no underlying substance or change in plot. The movie also does this thing where like a character will pass out from an injury or blood loss, and some of them come back later and some just die, so you're kind of confused like is eh dead or not and theirs no clues to help you figure that out either.

Overall, it wasn't an awful movie, and it had it's moments, but it just was missing something that movies of it's genre like reservoir dogs had that ended up leaving the film kind of empty.

Unrefined, sloppy, standard.
10 October 2019
This movie wasn't awful like some are making it out to be. The acting is basically perfect, the CGI is really good, and there are some genuinely scary scenes. It's a professional and competent movie, but at the end of the day, it's just that. The movie is 3 hours long for really no reason. The structuring of this movie is very strange as well. For a good chunk of the movie it's like the same scene played over and over again with different characters. And you'll notice throughout the movie that they weirdly make fun of the fact that the ending of the movie is bad, which kind of makes sense because the ending is really stupid.

A movie so "so bad it's good" it's actually enjoyable and awful
6 October 2019
Not a lot to say, it's so cheesy it's annoying instead of charming. It's lazy, bad, the worst thing ever OMG. Not even funny how bad it is.

Sealing this trilogy in legend
4 October 2019
Not as good as the dark night, but certainly an amazing piece of cinema. The epic scale of the story, the dark bleak tone, and the conclusion to batman's character perfectly ends this trilogy. The action is very well done, the lighting and cinematography and all that was good, all the performances were good, it was hard to find things with this movie. one thing I did notice was some, not much but some of the dialogue was a little unrefined and odd, and in particular the relationship between batman and cat woman is like "ok". I don't think this movie really goes that far to try being a message filled masterpiece, but the thing is, it doesn't need to. This movie is also very re watchable and much like the dark night, there is a lot of stuff that could be picked up on a second or third viewing. Anyway the point is its very good goddamn movie that can be enjoyed by both critics and normies like me

Not a masterpiece, but entertaining AF!
3 October 2019
Like I said, it's not a masterpiece, and it certainly has some problems, but the movie knew exactly what it needed to be and what it needed to do and it did it well. Statham, Johnson, Ilba and the rest of the cast all did a pretty good. The action is over the top but entertaining and exiting. The movie was also pretty self aware and wasn't as arrogant as the other F&F movies. And I loved the choice to make a F&F movie with such a bizarre and over the top plot. At some points the movie got a little to repetitive and cliche for me, and some of the jokes and skits were a little bit weaker than others, but like I said this movie is not the one made to be a masterpiece, or to be analysed for messages or deeper meaning, its just a dumb summer movie but a really good one at that.

Funny, clever, and certainly a good western
3 October 2019
I liked this movie quite a lot, there is great cinematography, solid performances, and some funny jokes to. One thing I liked in particular was that it definitely made an effort to be a western and encapsulate that time period and the culture surrounding it. My only problems with it are the constant switches in tone in all the short stories. I got used to it later on, but at the beginning I was kind of wandering what the movie was trying to be and was thinking, "kind of a weird comedy" or, " very odd drama" and it threw me off a little bit. Also, some of the skits were a little drawn out and felt kind of empty, but overall it was a very enjoyable and entertaining movie.
