Joy Ride (2001)
Not since "Fargo".....
...have I ever seen a movie that tries to be both funny & scary and pulls it off successfully. Rusty Nail was faceless villian who pulled off some pretty frightening things as he pursued two hilarious idiots named Lewis & Fuller. Terrific stuff!!
This film was only 90 minutes long and they didn't waste a minute of it with any useless filler. They got the ball rolling less than ten minutes into the movie and it never faltered anywhere. And it didn't have your typical, sappy Hollywood ending, either. That sure made me happy.
A few things to note, for those who havn't figured things out, Rusty Nail had at least one accomplice in his ordeal with Lewis, Fuller, & Venna. How else could he have hunted down Charlotte & then tracked down the other three in Nebraska? He had to have had help. And remember the final scene w/ the ambulance CB? Rusty Nail was obviously calling from an accomplice vehicle that was carrying him off into the night. It was smart of the director to just imply the presence of accomplices rather than introduce them because that would have been too complicated.
In short, this was great summer entertainment. 7/10.
The Princess Diaries (2001)
So Much Fun!
"The Princess Diaries" was exactly what it was created to be: cute, clean entertainment; nothing more, nothing less. It was such a refreshing change from the usual obscene junk Hollywood dishes out every month. The slapstick humor at the dinner party had me rolling in the ailes, literaly, because I couldn't get a seat in the theater it was so packed. And the ice cream incident was a classic bit of creative revenge. All in all, one of my favorite movies of the summer.
Do Not Disturb (1999)
I liked it.
What can I say? It had humor, it had action, so I can't complain. Besides, how can you go wrong when you have a character who can hear but can't speak. I've had an appreciation for that gimmick since seeing 'Mute Witness.' So what if it had a few unrealistic parts? It still had some exciting, on-edge parts in it, and you still cared about what happens to Melissa. If you people would just lighten up maybe you would feel the same way I do. I think I'll watch it again tomorrow.
In Between (1991)
It was good, because it was simple.
This movie is truly a unique experience, and I mean that in a good way. I mean, it has only four speaking parts and takes place entirely on one set. Also, the period of time the story covers is only about two hours. Something like that is nearly impossible to find anywhere in the movies, studio or independently made. That distinctive format in itself made this so enjoyable to watch. '12 Angry Men' followed this same format, as did 'My Dinner with Andre' and 'Two Girls & a Guy.' Its really tough to write an interesting screenplay under these circumstances because the entire movie is based on the characters just sitting down and talking to each other through the whole thing. You really have to write creatively to keep an audience's interest the whole time. Well, it kept me interested, so I guess it had good writing. Lastly, I was really impressed that such a little known movie had Robert Forster and Alexandra Paul in it. Talk about a rare gem. In short, I liked it. Wasn't spectacular, but I liked it.
Return to Me (2000)
The epitome of innocence
I loved this movie. It was a movie that celebrated family, morality, wholesomeness, and true love. Yes, it was formulamatic, and no, I did not care. It was a sweet movie with a nice story that made me smile and that's why I like it. Duchovny really showed his stuff, here. I could feel genuine agony from him as he grieved for Elizabeth. And Minnie Driver was just bursting with innocence in a role that demanded it. She was a fine choice. And Carroll O'Conner and friends were a riot. They were such a blast to watch. I'm just sorry I never saw this on the big screen. I am definitely buying this for my collection. It is just the thing to brighten my day.
