American Mary (2012)
Uniquely stylish and gothic - highly artistic film production
I kind of love this movie. I've seen it twice now but hadn't heard about it until a couple of years ago.
If you have a penchant the macabre and smoothly artistic film play, then please give this a go!
The storyline - as far as I can tell - is nearly if not wholly unique and uncomplicated. The mood is gothic and darkly subtle, set under a highly viable execution of suave and sophisticated acting and scenery throughout. A good balance of atmosphere with an undercurrent of an unsettling and insidious tone throughout: this film has artistic depth and character. The visuals are nicely executed too - from the murky background scenery to the purposefully alternative and gothic portrayals in costume choice.
This movie well depicts the concept of the dark and devilish streak that can lie buried in the human psyche. It also celebrates eccentricity via its characters, which perfectly blends in with the genre and intended audience.
If you like a bit of that smooth, original-style gothic vibe with an alternative and edgy blend of performances, topped off with darkly-dramatic scenarios and characters, then this could hit the spot. Definitely slick, subtly gruesome and very captivating. For some - perhaps enjoyed within the regions of pure guilty pleasures.
The Funhouse Massacre (2015)
Macabre, gore-delicious, obscure but friendly and well worth a viewing!
I love this movie so much it fast became one of my top watches pretty soon after the first viewing!
If you have an appreciation for obscure, creatively macabre and tongue-in-cheek over-the-top horror patterned with gothic and alternative movie visuals, then this is your film.
It's overtly designed to entertain its audience via deliberate execution of anything but being taken seriously. There is a good mix of exaggerated gore, the simplest and perhaps least original plot of all under the horror genre, and cheap but hugely enjoyable thrills.
Perhaps a late night, boredom-breaker type of viewing is one potential scenario where this movie may fit the bill for. If you're anything like me and enjoy a non-mainstream, hidden little esoteric number at bargain viewing, or those lower budget little gems for their intricate and unique little quirks, then definitely give this a go!
My Boss's Daughter (2003)
Doesn't deserve such a negative bashing in my opinion
I first saw this movie about 10 years ago give or take. The impression that stayed in mind since was that it was enjoyable and laugh-out-loud funny overall. Decided to watch it again about a year or two ago then again with my mum this year. I've never thought it was a film designed to be super slick, uniquely humorous to a point where it needed to stand out or even taken that seriously. With a synchronous awareness there are PLENTY of films existing - under numerous genres - that undoubtedly aim at being the antithesis of goofy and light-hearted, even when they're supposed comedies. There are a lot of bad films where creators and writers resolutely focus too much on individuality and exclusiveness, resulting in vapid and tedious viewing.
In my opinion this movie is light-hearted in the most non-pretentious way and for those not a fan of "too American" humour it also gains points for. The laugh-out-loud parts are hilarious even if you weren't in a "concentration" sort of mood. The one liners and subtle comebacks are also typical of that Zucker humour and exist in just the right format.
It's a feel-good without sappiness or mushy stuff. Would cheer you up if you were a bit down and needed a quick-fix laugh to release some endorphins.
I'd say give it a chance and take it for what it is!
