Lost in Paris

While it has nothing offensive in it's viewing, it keeps reminding me that I've see this before from that one other move that came before and did it better. The cinematographic, editing, audio, writing and acting are good as in comparison to the time it was made. Out of it all the writing and editing stands out the most to me. It would have a much higher rating (at lest a 7) if it had more originality. Enjoyable but nothing new.

It wants to be from the perspective of the lead actor but she doesn't seem to have more to ad then being. There is only a shy girl but what else.

The editing feels cinematic at times and then like a video which I give it it's highest rating, since it is a video format. The fast pace and shallow depth of filed helps as well so points to the cinematographer as well. A few cinematic flairs with some zooms.

Nothing wrong with the acting but there aren't too many long shots to really get more character.

Dialog in the writing feels right but I didn't get much out of it by the end. French is a second language to me so I may be missing something there.

I'd still be interested in watching more from all involved who I mentioned (editing, etc.) with a better story idea. It shows good work in craft but lack in filling the entertainment value for this viewer.

My physical copy (it can be found on youtube.com) had extras so I went through those. I didn't give me to much more to ad interest into the story.

Given that it was put together for a magazine so it was produced by them as the client, I once again give praise to the craft but the lack of story makes me only wanting to come back to this for second watch for the editing and cinematography.

Real Fiction (2000)

What is Real in one take or a specific itch scratched.

We follow an artist frustrated with the wrongs others have caused him, not knowing who his vengeance might be coming for next.

This is my second Kim Ki-duk film, 3-iron being my first of his films. I enjoyed this one much more, although 3-Iron was highly rated in comparison. This film didn't lose me in the middle like 3- Iron did. It keep the suspense a lot tighter with comic breaks between the gore that kept me waiting for the next moment of vengeance to come. Good watch for some Oldboy lovers.

The violence in this film is something you may see in a Brian de Palmas film. Cutting away before showing the result of the main character's bloody vengeance. Leaving the viewer to wonder who might have escaped his retaliations.

You won't be enticed into watching this film with its cinematography but the way it is shot is propriety to the mood of the film. That doesn't mean it's bad, just not flashy.

The motivation of the main character is much more satisfying than that of the movie Saw but the ending doesn't hit as strong. Taste of Cherry anyone.

The Room with better acting

A lot of explicit scenes. The movie was well shot. The story was too slow for me. Sexy but seemed pointless.

Jane Campion also directed The Piano which has the same feel but a much better story.

film student reference to art house movies

The film spends most of the time on the references to past cinema. Not a heavy on plot. Simple ending with a reveal from one of the story tellers. I enjoyed the reproduction of past cinema.

Some good acting with entertaining ending

I really liked where the story went but some of the dialog and motivations of the character choices were distracting and forced. While most of the acting was good his love interest was a little flat. Over all entertaining and a good production.

I really loved these characters

Great watch. I've watched it twice and enjoyed it both times. I wanting more from the secondary character. He's memorable but wanted him to more tired to the main story, which is not a bad place to be. The main character was great. I enjoyed the story and it's quirky way of getting to it's title.

The cinematography at the end was the best part

It was hard to understand the character choices, they don't add to the plot or the characters. I knew the ending a few seconds after it began.

It needed less. Too many characters, too many cuts, and little to no motivation, other than we created a monster.

Underrated minor Kazan film with stylized editing
4 October 2021
If you need a straightforward story with a Hollywood ending, you won't get it here. There is no hero in this story.

The director is known for: On the Waterfront, A Streetcar Named Desire, & East of Eden. A Streetcar Named Desire explores similar topics but with a conventional liner story. This film breaks some conventional storyline structures by giving the audience impressions of the characters from different points in their lives, connecting to what is currently happening to them. It touching on topics like devotion, desire, accomplishment, and self-satisfaction.

The cinematographer is known for The Graduate, so you will get a lot of interesting visual flourishes to add to the atmosphere, as Kirk Douglas's character disconnects himself from his modern life of the late 1960s.

The story is about a middle-aged well-to-do man, who is the son of a Greek immigrant, working for an agency that markets cigarettes as "clean", even though everyone in the company is aware that they have been proven to cause cancer. At the pinnacle of his success, he doubts the path he has chosen for his life. Denying his creative interests to cultivate the American Dream and have the house, career, and family that others admire.

Starring Kirk Douglas gives a performance the keeps the audience interested in what he will do next, ranging from quirky to frightening displays of madness.

This film needs to be experienced in order to fully understand the story. No synopsis will do it justice.
