Anyone But You (2023)
Charmless & Boring
Starting this review midway through the movie as I have given up hope that it will get any better after the rehearsal dinner boat scene, and because it is so dull that I cannot force myself to continue to give it my undivided attention. I'm about to start my laundry just to liven up the mood.
This film has everything ingredient it needs for the perfect recipe to crank out a completely mid tier Rom Com and yet it fails the mark by a nautical mile. The 2nd star is solely because the film is well shot and well lit throughout, something that is increasingly rare in film & tv these days. Everything in this movie quite literally from the opening scene feels so forced, phoned in, and just soulless. There is no on screen chemistry between ANY of the characters, none of the relationships from the protagonists to the family members and lifelong friends feels genuine. The plot points also feel so forced and unnatural. It's just really overall a real dud of a film.
Also, NONE of the very clear jokes and obvious parts you're supposed to laugh at are funny, at all. The acting from pretty much the whole cast is elementary, and I've seen some of these people ACT so I can only put that on how they were directed? Idk, but what a slog.
At this point, I am only going to finish it so I can complete this review and post in good faith, but I am going to roll up and make some tacos, because man am I bored.
Updates: Not even the sex scene was hot, even though both actors very much are. Everything just so inauthentic.
Every scene gets progressively worse, at a certain point you just gotta laugh. It has all the tension of a cut guitar string. Reader, please -I beg- save yourselves, your time, your coin. This is a poo and made for no one in particular, just the studios trying to milk Valentine's day to try to recoup some of that strike loss.
This film is relentless, it doesn't even end when it ends. The credits are egregious. Hated this experience, 0/10 recommend.
The End We Start From (2023)
Women
This film is a story of survival, of finding your way back home when home doesn't really exist anymore. This is not a story about the end of the world, nor is it plot heavy and on the nose with it's point. Don't watch it if your interest is in watching a disaster movie, this is not that. Not dialogue heavy, the movie is poignant in it's sparseness. Is it perfect in it's production? Probably not, but it's a human story, well told and excellently acted. Jodie Comer is a powerhouse leading you through her story of survival with an ability to convey a breadth of emotions; she is a joy and a wonder to watch on screen. I genuinely loved this film, and it's really no wonder to me in seeing the amount of women in the credits. It is bold, beautiful, emotional, and visually stunning cinema, I want more of it. Not since maybe seeing The Florida Project have I felt so moved by a film.
The Bear (2022)
Finally Got it Right
This show caught me all the way off guard. As someone with over ten years in the industry, I have never seen such an accurate portrayal of a professional kitchen on screen before. The way I could see myself and everyone I know (the good, the bad, and the ugly parts) in some form through every single character was astounding, truly. The writing is excellent, the story is great, the portrayals and performances by all of the cast, even the most minor characters is spot on; you care about these people and this restaurant almost immediately. I cannot rate this show highly enough. It's heartfelt, funny, dark, honest, and a little bit depraved -just like the best kitchens- not to mention I loved the pacing and editing, as well as the cinematography; food is shot beautifully. I love everything about this show, I just I wish the episodes were longer and I hope we get a second season!

THE AUDACITY
BRUH WOW. This year has been hard enough, and then I sat through this offensive display of nothing. I can't even believe that was a real production where multiple professionals collaborated and all were like, "Yes, good job, good project team, let's show other people, AND LET'S ASK THEM FOR MONEY IN EXCHANGE" Terrible. Hilariously bad. It played like one of the fever dreams I had after getting my 2nd Covid shot.
The Good Lord Bird (2020)
Overall Excellence
What a story, what a show. Ethan Hawke gives the performance of his life in this, but every character in this production is acted to perfection. The script is great, it's beautifully shot. I cannot get enough of it and am currently rewatching the series. It's funny and weird and deep and important, can't praise it enough. This one goes up to 11.
Lady Death (2004)
Upsettingly Bad
As a lover of the comics, I really hated this. In full fairness, I didn't finish it, because it's awful, so my review is based off the first few scenes. The animation, the voice acting, all of it was just not good at all. Stick to the books, sorry to the creators and those involved if you read this.
Clickbait (2021)
Bruh, this was boring as hell
Sat down to watch this and by episode two I was up cleaning my house; bathroom never looked so good. By episode four I full on did not care did not care about how it ended. None of the characters are likeable, the plot is over complicated, and the entire thing just drags on. The writing, at least, wasn't as bad as most of Netflix's original drama's are.
