Disappointing movie about one of the greatest singers of all time
23 December 2021
The writing is poor and the acting is mostly flat. The movie does not truly represent Aretha's electrifying persona. Hudson can belt and is a great singer, but she doesn't add the right pathos to Aretha. Overproduced. Great wardrobe and awesome colour grade.

I'll never be able to reverse the time wasted on this movie
1 April 2021
Here I am, after 2.5 hours. I'll keep this short as I have no interest in wasting further time. These notes were written during the movie, about 1.5 hours in, after I completely lost all investment in the plot, acting and dialogue.

1. The dialogue is like a game of ping-pong, not what you'd expect from seasoned pros making a high budget film.

2. In the writing, the plot is over-explained yet unclear...

3. The sound is terrible - music and sound effects loud, vocal delivery mixed low and seems like actors are often whispering...

4. The characters have virtually no depth, and I mean all of them. The baddie especially disappointing.

5. The script is very dull, confused and amateurish.

6. The photography and special FX save the film.

Fundamentally this movie is trying to be Inception, and fails.

Best part of the film is watching things go backwards, but even that looks awkward/staged/goofy at times.

I've seen reviews saying to watch this twice, that's really not the point of a movie especially not one that lasts 2.5 hrs.

Truthful, heartbreaking spotlight on the violation of trans people and white American privilege
14 October 2020
This movie moved me, it saddened me. It is about a young, loving and kind trans woman escort in the Philippines and how an American military man brutally murdered her for being trans. This man has not been brought to justice and was protected by the American government, who clearly rewards murderers when trans people of colour are the ones losing their lives.

We await for justice to be done. Her mother's words made me cry. Justice for Ganda.

Do not watch this
23 February 2020
This movie's plot is all over the place. Besides being uninteresting, the main character's quest has no bigger picture. The supporting characters are loosely related to one another, with no clear sense of why interactions need to happen. The worst scene is the trapeze scene. I have seen zero budget short films on YouTube executed better than this. This film goes to show that wealth needs to be redistributed so that people with very great ideas can invest in them, while people with not so great ideas don't have the means to execute them poorly. I hope the filmmakers see this and create something better. I appreciate the effort!
