The Substitute 2: School's Out (1998)
the movie was OK but IMDb's plot summary...
First of all, Treat Williams character is named 'Karl Thomasson' NOT 'John Shale' as alluded to in the 'plot summary'. John Shale was Tom Berenger's character's name in the original 'substitute'. Get with it IMDb. As for the movie... it is OK if you like bad guys getting theirs. if you like Treat Williams it is very good. overall I would rate the movie a 6-7. ( I like Treat, Hair is an outstanding movie and I hate musicals.) If you have not seen 'Hair', do so. Its a really great movie about the lengths friends will go for each other. see 'Substitute' only if there's nothing else on or you're a Treat Williams fan. All 4 'Substitute' movies are basically the same plot. Mercenary takes offense at the treatment of others at the hands of thugs and takes matters into his own hands to make the bad guys pay.
The Lord of the Rings (1978)
This is a mediocre attempt at recreating a brilliant story.
The story of 'The Lord of the Rings" is probably the greatest 'good against evil' story of its kind. This version of it is not very good at all. Now the animation is brilliant, especially the technique Bakshi used with drawing "over" real actors....this was very innovative at the time. Of course with todays computer generated animation this form has become obsolete, which may explain why Mr. Bakshi neglected to finish the story. Which brings me to the worst part of the whole thing. He does not follow the story very closely and some of the characters are so far apart from their personalities in the book, that any true Tolkien fan will be appalled. Furthermore, he ends the story with the battle of Helms Deep, where Gandalf brings the Ent's "hourns" , which are walking trees. They do not appear in the movie at all, and since they are the reason the humans win the battle it seems rather short sited to leave them out. This is only about half way through 'The Two Towers", which is the 2nd of three books. The only thing I can say that actually entertained me was Gollum. He steals the show in my opinion. Of course its only an opinion, but is is mine.
In closing, let me say this: over all this is an interesting cartoon that is very entertaining, but if you are very familiar with the story, it is nothing more than a novelty..sorry Mr. Bakshi.
