The Marvels (2023)

Fun time thats all i asked for
9 November 2023
This feels like such a superhero movie. Like oldschool. You know when superheroes were too nerdy for the general population and they felt a bit weird? That what this feels like. I get that that means a lot of people will be disappointed. If you expect too much you will not like this movie.

However if you wanna be entertained by three charismatic leads than this is the movie for you. Its just lighthearted fun. The shorter runtime also means that for once you do not feel overwhelmed while watching. It also means you probably won't be talking about this movie for months. But it was worth it watching it at the theater and i will definitly rewatch it again if i wanna have a good 105 minutes of entertainment. Expectation is really everything with this movie. Not everything needs to be a masterpiece sometimes its enough to make viewers smile and laugh and not think too hard.

Lioness (2023– )

People are surprised this isn't a documentary?
3 September 2023
Special Ops: Lioness is not a perfect show but it definitly kept my attention over all 8 episodes. A lot of shows fail to do that these days. One of the reason why it works for me is that everyone only does whats in their best interest - that is actually quite realistic and erases the idea of clear good guys or clear bad guys.

Does that mean its a realistic show about the military? Of course not why would anyone expect that? A second season would be well deserved and I am really glad that we did not have to deal with a brutal cliffhanger (i was worried about that at some point). Basically I advice anyone to go in relativly blind and watch at least 2 episodes.

This movie should exist but I will never rewatch it
9 February 2023
I watched this on a streaming plattform and I am glad I did. This movie certainly makes you think. The story structure is interesting, the music is haunting.

However it lacks something that would make it great. And to be honest if I had watched it on a big screen it would not have had the same effect. It does at times feel like a documentary and I would not have enjoyed this style if I had to sit through it in one going and with high expectations. Thats because the movie takes its time, which is fine. But I do have to say that I did not need the final battle - or maybe a different one. It felt just like it had to be there. The ending just does not bring it home for me. Also - and I asume this was intentional - in each perspective only the POV character got to shine. This means that the other two main characters were pretty much there ... this kinda takes you out of it all. Maybe thats whats lacking: I was at no point fully imersed in the story I was at all times aware I was watching a movie.

Most surprising show
11 January 2023
I really did not know that I wanted to see lighthearted fantasy adventure stories like this. But apparantly I do. And a show that can make me change my mind like that must be special.

The cinematography of some scenes is simply amazing. The lightheartedness is probably not everyones favorite thing - but its exactly what this show needed to work. We already got 1000 fantasy shows were everything is dark and grimm and overwhelming. This is just a joyfull ride.

Which is also why I don't judge it too harshly. If a show is set out to entertain you but not win emmys than you should not judge it by ridiculous standards. My biggest pet peeve is definitly the terrible cutting in almost all scenes but especially fight scenes. You can do it guys, you can keep me invested even if a couple of secons pass without a cut.

Anyways its far from perfect but I enjoyed it so much and hope there will be more.

Heartbreak High (2022–2025)

Lots of laughs, enjoyed it
17 November 2022
I kinda expected a Sex Education knock-off. And in some ways it is. In the beginning it is actually a bit distracting. But with every episode it actually takes a step away and - as many have pointed out - feels a bit like Euphoria instead. Considering that some people feel like Euphoria is too heavy and SE a bit too quirky Heartbreak High rests in the middle. Last episode is a bit messy but I can overlook that considering some great perfomances along the way (Quinni and Ca$h especially, the kind of represenation that is so desperatly needed). Shows like this are really great to binge. Just saw that it got renewed - Excited for more.

Even if there is nothing else to watch I won't watch this
13 November 2022
I cannot remember the last time I had to stop watching a show early on even though I liked the premise. But holy moly I could not even get through the second episode. The writing is horrendous. Every little thing is repeated over and over again. Nothing happens between the lines. You have to really expect your audience to be stupid to write a show like this. Stop explaining every little action and thought! And if you have to say something, say it once! Also: who the hell needs flashbacks of previous events within the dialogue? We literally just saw that one episode ago! Editing and pacing are so bad. The fight scenes are terrible. Seriously...Feels like a first time project with an excessive budget.

Worth the watch and quite entertaining
13 November 2022
Really hooked for about six episodes, enjoyed the show as a whole but a bit disappointed in the last few episodes.

Really love shows that pair supernatural elements with an "well that life for us now"-attitude. Humor is on point and the chemistry between cast members is great. Sadly after the sixth episode the pacing isn't ideal. That episode felt like a season finale. But instead the show kept going and was a bit all over the place. But that can be excused in a first season I think. The world/story has a lot more potential and this is honestly the kind of content I am looking for from Netflix. Would love a second season.

Hopefully this time arround we keep the quality
13 November 2022
Coming back to this franchise after everything that happened with the later seasons of GOT was certainly an experience. I would have been happy to be mad at how bad this ist - but its just not. The pacing is obviously awful. But this will change by season 2. So this is a set up season - which was clearly comunicated upfront.

The acting is phenomenal, the visuals are great (expect for one episode where we went dark again), the soundtrack doesn't miss and the topics at hand are more relevant than ever. The only real complaint is that it relies a little too heavy on explaining the characters and plotpoints after the episode. Leaving some things up for interpretation is fine but sometimes you are alowed to make it clear. Again - could just be because this is a first season that rushes through so much.

Great concept but underwhelming execution
12 November 2022
This show never really got of the ground for me. What made it interesting is definitly the way the story is told from two different perspective. Nice touch on the unreliable narrator concept. But other than that there is not much to talk about. I honestly had to look the show up to write this review because I had forgotten most of it - even though I watched it just two week ago. That is not a good sign. There should be something that would make me excited for a second season. However I do not regret watching it - it did pass the time. Richard Harmon was the highlight of the show for me. If there was another season I would tune in but with no excitment or great anticipation to be honest.

Incredibly first season but disappointing second one
12 November 2022
Warning: Spoilers
I wanna say: A third season for this was absolutly needed. If you produce one standout season and one that kinda fumbles you should be allowed to bring the story to an satisfying end.

However the second season was just a huge disappointment. Basically doubling the cast was a terrible idea. What carried the first season where the raw human emotions, the mystery and the time we got to spend with the girls and their backstorys. Now everything feels rushed. I left season one feeling excited for such a female driven story that asks important questions about womens roles in soiciety. In season two the girls basically hang out on an island. Including more castmembers in this way was just not worth it.

The kind of show that makes Netflix worth it
12 November 2022
This is what I am looking for in a streaming series. It may not have reinvented the wheel but it was different enough to be entertaining. The cast shows up and the chemistry is on point. And it did not shy away from violence. It feels a bit low budget - but that works perfectly fine for this kind of story because it keeps it grounded. Same goes for a contained cast (so many shows suffer from too many characters and plotlines). One thing that really got to me was the soundtrack. Its simple but effective. If only Netflix would focus on these kind of projects, I would have so much more love for the company. Hoping for more seasons.

Disappointed
12 November 2022
Honestly this show would not have to do much to rope me in. I needed some fun. Some heartfelt moments. But it was just so meh. None of the characters fate interested me in the slightest. Expect for little moments the show was not clever or different enough to make it worth the watch. Honestly if they would have completly gone for the nostalgia route it would have been a bit silly - but probably more entertaining. Skipped through the last episodes and was honestly it ending on no resolution or message or anything is really bad. Before the ending I was just not convinced but not landing the last episode is a bad sign.

9 and 10 star reviews tell you a lot but so do the 1 and 2 star reviews
6 January 2022
This show exceeds all expectations. And it does so on every level. Visuals, storytelling, pacing, music, ... writers, producers and everyone involved clearly did not waste a single frame.

If you wanna see people telling you that they need every little detail spelled out for them you can check the very few negative reviews this show has. It is always a version of "i don't get it" which tells you a lot about the show actually: It does not fall into the trap so many shows and movies fall into at the moment where mass appeal means nuance is unwanted. You can rewatch this show 10 times and still find new details from background art to a little eyebrow twitch.

Never been more excited for a second season.

Legacies (2018–2022)

Wasted Potential
28 August 2021
I do not mind that this show is for younger audiences. I do not mind that it is a bit quirky. I actually really enjoyed season one and parts of season two - just for what it was. But season three should have been one that defined what this show wants to be. Instead the already weak writing went downhill completly. The puddle is still the "big bad" (did the writers not read any book on writing good villains? Any first year student in film studies could tell you why puddles don't make great villains). Hope is not the "legacy" of the Mikaelson family at all she is actually quite boring. New characters get introduced and you get invested and then they just disappear? Killing the same character over and over takes any thrill out of his dramatic scenes by the way - again film school just tells you that early on...

All in all the potential Legacies had - in general and after season one - is wasted. I don't wanna over-interpret actors behaviour (offscreen) but the excitement the cast had in season 1 and 2 seems to have completly vanished.

I am honestly just sad that the very low expectations I have for a show like this are not enough to make me keep watching it. And I might shrug, move on and say "other writers have beautiful shows too" and this is just me not liking it personally but sadly a lot of people are sharing this feeling of being let down and there seems to be no interest in fixing this mess. I would be suprised if it gets another season - unless it becomes a running joke like Riverdale.

Entertaining and clever AF
25 August 2020
Like a lot of people I saw the trailer and thought, well this could be fun but better not to expect too much. I did not see coming how clever and full of satire this show would be. They walk the line between ridiculous, heartfelt and social/religious satire extremely well. Not quite sure how they actually pulled it off because a lot of shows fail when they try a concept like this.

You want an action movie, you got an action movie (but nothing more)
31 July 2020
Cool concept, great actors, a few laughs and fun action scenes. But thats it. No real moral dilemmas, every conflict feels overly scripted. Not a time waster, might watch it again sometimes but also nothing to actually stay with me like a good movie should.

Warrior Nun (2020–2022)
10/10
One hell of a ride with some really weird reviews
16 July 2020
This show is far from perfect. The pacing is terrible and so are the effects (by 2020 standards). But it is as wacky and weird as a show called Warrior Nun should be. Upon second viewing it has an incredibly attention to detail in some regards which I did honestly not expect. There are very few shows that I enjoy more after rewatching - Warrior Nun should definitly be watched twice.

The weirdest thing about this show about warrior nuns are actually the reviews. The most common complaint is about Ava not accepting her new life but goofing around. Hello? Firstly she is a Teenager who has never experienced freedom before and secondly: This show goes out of its way to explain this to the audience. There is scene upon scene where we see the struggle but Ava choses herself first. Are viewers really so arrogant as to think that they would handle the situation any different? With a backround like this? This show would have been a complete waste of time without a struggling and loud mouthed protagonist like Ava.

Update season 2: What a ride! These days I rarely find a second season that keeps up the quality - its even more rare to find one that actually gets better. But Warrior Nun just did that. The sets are gorgeous, the fight scenes are way to good for a "simple" Netflix show and even the special effects got better (Yes its still obvious that supernatural monsters are not really part of the casting process but considering the visual effects quality some big budget movies have these days, this show actually exceeded expectations in most scenes). Somehow with 8 episodes and a big cast they stilled managed to not make it too confusing or rushed. Some characters arcs didn't work as well (for me) as others but that didn't take away from the enjoyment of the show. All in all you can really feel that everyone involved is not only loving the project but actually just really good at their job. Heres to hoping for season 3 (and hopefully with less waiting).

It wasn't that hard to make an entertaining movie with a concept like this
17 June 2020
I really don't get how you can make a movie this uninspired and boring. I sat through about 30 minutes and tried to drop in later - still not interesting or good. Predictably as hell which could be forgiven if there was humor or a great message.

It is also really badly edited sometimes? I suspected it would be an artistic choice but it only happened sometimes and just threw me off.

Weddings are such a common theme and the cast is great. I really don't get how you make a movie like this? Why make it? And why not make it better with all the potential right infront of you?

Great concept, great leads, slight dip towards the end
8 June 2020
This show is a breath of fresh air. You can tell that the writers know way more about this world than they are showing us which is always incredibly important to make you feel emersed in the story. While there is a certain level of predictability the chemistry between the lead actresses (and side characters) is definitly enough to still enjoy the ride.

I really enjoyed the weird color scheme as well. Not only is it used as its own theme it makes it very clear that this is a world of its own. The soundtrack is also brilliant.

The one big critique point is the season finale. You could clearly feel that this show would have benefitted from additional two or three episodes. Leaving questions open is one thing but only answering two while leaving five open and also opening up three more takes away a bit of the trust you've built with your audience. However since the show has been renewed this will hopefully not take away from the experience.

Update after season 2: The writers, crew and cast have proven that they know what they are doing. Only thing I can critisize is that 10 episodes are clearly not enough which means a lot of plots feel rushed. Honestly if this show would be on Hulu, Amazon or Netflix it would have probably been a breakout hit because of longer episodes and the writers alowing themselves to take their time.

Lovingly roasting each other is the purest form of love
8 May 2020
There is so little humor based on stereotypes or discrimination I cannot believe it. Most jokes work simply because of character dynamics. You can rewatch this show again and again. Because some jokes work better on a monday while others work better when you are hungry - it is incredibly rewatchable.

Roasting each other while also loving one another? That is so close to normal life family/friendship that it comes to no surprise that this shows fanbase is huge!

Fresh, entertaining, best laugh of the year
21 November 2019
In a time of blockbusters and remakes this movie simply made my week. Laughed a lot, even had tears in my eyes, was not bored for a second, will watch it again.

It is beautifully shot in many scenes (no spoiler: that one shot during the escalating conflict) and breaks with a lot of clichees without reminding you every 2 minutes that it breaks with clichees. And if you do not like it because it talks about periods and normalizes please grow up. I have to think really hard to even find a movie that deals with these topics remotely as naturally as Booksmart.

You cannot complain about Hollywoods uncreative filmaking (reboots, franchises, etc.) and then hate on a movie like this. Sorry this is what we ask for and Olivia Wild and her team delivered.

Extremely cheap german comedy
7 November 2019
Honestly if you enjoy cheap, scripted reality tv humor than this is a movie for you. If you actually love intelligent stories that make you laugh but also deliver an important message - don't bother. Not the only one who thinks like that. Many reviews talk about the homophobic "jokes" and the terrible handling of serious topics - because you can talk about/show "heavy" problems and still make them funny. Sadly no one tried it with this movie. The italian and french versions are not perfectly innocent either but the german version simply lacks thought and ambition to actually be more than just a cheap laugh for people who do not acutally care about good comedy.
