Too Long a Winter (1973 TV Movie)

Classic British TV Documentary Worth Watching
16 March 2024
This is a classic British documentary most remembered for covering the lives of cattle and sheep farmers in the Dale's of Northern England in 1973. A wonderful Vaughan Williams score provides a back drop. The cinematography is simply splendid.

The film largely follows the Bainbridges and Hannah Hauxwell, who subsequently became a minor media star. The film captures a bygone era, of isolated farmers trying to make a living in difficult circumstances with little money. Hannah, lives a most basic and lonely life but is a gentlewoman making the best as a single woman running a farm alone.

On a personal note I watched this as a young child, and I was struck by this compared to the Waltons - the only farming comparator I had. I remember wishing Hannah's life was like the Waltons. The loneliness of Hannah struck the whole Nation.

Olive Field the local 'Lady' hosting a thanks giving ball offers an interesting segue and links to the main theme of the hill farmers lives through contrast with her wealth.

The film can be found on YouTube, there are copies of different film quality so it's worth searching properly. A number of Hannah's other films are there.

Unsatisfactory ending.... not!
13 March 2024
Warning: Spoilers
Brilliant cast, great story and a little too long by probaby two episodes. That's the easy bit. I watched on Netfilx so didn't get the niggle of the weekly short episode problem.

I laughed heartily at what so many reviewers described as an unsatisfactory resolution. There is something very deep in the USA psyche that justice must prevail in some form. Well it didn't and the ending is brilliant for it. Just like the end of Electra Glide in Blue, I didn't see it coming...

The irony of the story is that the therapist had to die to make an impact. In the end he kind of prevailed by making the killer see the cost to his actions was too much. That indeed, his compulsion could only be restrained and not resolved. The therapist's bravery and his own resolution was clear.

All the discussions in the reviews about the victims should have fought the killer or the killer wasn't strong enough all miss the point. In this drama a very human evil prevailed. For now...

Spellbinding...
23 December 2023
Few films if any, deliver this level of relaxation. Watching elderly gentlemen hiking through through wilderness, rarely speaking with over dubbed bird song is simply a cinematic revelation. It has helped me reframe my expectations of movie excellence. We maybe witnessing the birth of a new genre. The clever interplay of the occasional big foot growl offers a juxtaposition of the relaxed with the abject terror of the prowling beast glimpsed, as though a man in a ghillie suit. The cinematography left me speechless, filmed using a late 80s handycam to great effect, giving the film a homemade feel. I watched this film unable to move transfixed by its unfolding drama, awaiting the thrilling finish. In a word 'amazing'. Great that we have seen a wider release of this emerging classic. Thank you for that, whoever thought of it. Thank you indeed.

A fine dark and chilling story
19 November 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Perfect for a dark winters night. Put the fire on but lock the door...

I have to confess I have spent many a night in a bothy, sipping a whisky and if I am lucky sitting next to a warm fire. Occasionally a dark unknown figure will arrive, thankfully not as dark or sinister as the one in this fim. This film captured that sense of location wonderfully. The oppression of the wind and grey sky against the back drop of the mountains.

This is masterpiece in virtually solo film making. Ian Gordon plays both the main parts and wrote the haunting score. Given the resource limitations, he has skillfully used everything at his disposal to produce this tense dark tale, with a gripping unexpected ending.

The ending was just fine....
23 September 2023
Atmospheric, dark and well paced indie scare flick. For a budget film the cinematography was great against the dramtic back drop of Svalbard. Acting was on point and the slow evolving story was just right at 125 minutes. The film has an original feel to it and I think a good premise.

Reading the reviews I was expecting a terrible ending. It wasn't. It was great. Just like many good horrors, you are left wondering why and there isn't any closure on final outcome. No one criticises The Birds for this approach. For a budget flick they used every resource to produce a dark and satisfying tale of a trip turned into a nightmare.

Could have been very good
31 August 2023
In summary smart, clued up paranormal guy - Jack Osbourne takes 'dude' pal into the Idaho woods to search for bigfoot. Can't decide if pal was playing a character or he's actually an extra from Wayne's World brought to life.

Problems with premise aside, it has some interesting footage and Jack's enthusiasm carries the programme to a degree, but running around in the dark with dude struggles to deliver 1hr 22mins of content.

Jack you can do better, find a sidekick who is funny and drop 'dude world'. Or maybe this is all aimed at a demographic, that I don't get. Treat the subject matter with a little more respect.

Fine line between good and great
30 June 2023
First thing to say is Andrew Scott is superb but you need to get he's playing an autistic character and playing it brilliantly. It's an odyssey, one of those may UK films set and filmed in the USA. There's a whole thesis on these films somewhere, says alot about our national relationships... The film well its an absorbing, quirky and intriguing and dark dramea . Few central characters are autistic. For me it's only a skip away from brilliant. I can't quite say why maybe a bigger budget? Nevertheless, a thoroughly good ninety minutes that is well paced. It will hold your interest, make you think, ask where its going...

A tale of two presenters. Could have been great.
30 June 2023
Well the premise of the show is fine and an interesting idea. I'm an explorer type and have visited 4 of the countries featured. Parking the factual merits of each show/case. In general, JJ is a documentary maker and outdoorsman. Get that. Kinga is unfortunately unbearable, over bearing and way way too intense but still gutsy, which I respect. Strangley, she is out of her depth and yet dependent on JJ at the same time. It's unbalanced as a result. Kinga stop trying so much. Relax and let JJ speak. More discussion less assertion... I hope there there is another season but doesn't seem likely now. Could have been great instead of average.

Absolutely nothing happens, I mean nothing
27 June 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Well I am well use to unexplained films giving little in the way of evidence but generally they try to create a little drama, a few blurred images, on location interviews and a little folklore - enterning often & sometimes informative. This could almost be a deadpan mockumentary! It's not offensive because nothing and I meaning nothing happens. The film juxtaposes a sofa interview presenter, with a presenter camping in the snow. Not the slightest hint of anything usual let alone anything mysterious in the whole film. The only plus is the scenery is nice and the music relaxing. Good to snooze to... so a two! No idea how it has a 6.7.

It's an OK film with a great ending!
27 February 2023
So ok it's a mish mash of other films. It's the evil alien abduction genre. The most important factor is you either find the genre entertaining or you do not. There is little point as many reviewers do in questioning it's internal logic. Such as why would aliens travel light years only to torture and murder or why don't they wear clothes. Step out of logic and the experience improves. Take it at face value and its worth a watch. Gil Belows and Micheal Ironside add some quality. And there's that great 5 min ending! We even have Cigarette Smoking Man tipping a wink to the X Files. It doesn't get better than that!

Powerful, Original, Violent & Bleak - Epic
25 February 2023
In a very well trodden path of the heroic Viking seeking revenge, this film brings an original and brutal story to life. This is a million miles from The Vikings (1958) and even contemporaries like Valhalla Rising (2009), are not so bleak, not so joyless; this film stands alone. No the characters are not engaging, there is not a hint of humour, little humanity and not even any great sense of right and wrong. I'm not even sure by the end of the film you even care who emerges as the victor. It hits you with a shock and awe brutality, that I have not seen since the Revanent.

So what can we say about this joyless, unengaging and cold masterpiece. It's the best film I'll never watch again. It's brilliant. You just won't 'like it', you'll just admire it!

It's just entertainment!
10 December 2022
Put simply, saying this isn't real is like saying Scoobie Doo isn't real. It's just a bit of fun. It's light hearted, daft and funny. It makes me laugh and spooks the kids in a boogy man kind of way. It doesn't really compare to anything else because it doesn't take itself that seriously. Don't bother talking about the acting/live action or poor CGI it's just the way it is....

Get yourself a nice coffee and cake, then sit back and enjoy. It won't last forever and when it's gone you'll miss it. Me and my son howl laughing. Just as is intended. It's a little ray of sunshine nonsense in a a complicated world!

Worth a watch but just the once
28 November 2022
Struggling to grasp why one reviewer suggested they would remember how bad this film was, on their death bed! All cinema is not going to thrill or set a new bar. Stop imagining it will.

It's a film that could have been great but its only ok because the script let it down and so did the direction. Good premise, generally good cast and good score. The sense of menace as the characters transform is palpable. It's just a bit wooden; a bit clunky and slow. It really misses the opportunity to explore what it would take to colanise a moon, rather it focuses on Frakenstein like horror. Tom Wilkinson only has to breath to add quality. Watch it once then let it go.

A poor reboot of the highly original series, mediocre writing and substantially less recognizable impressions limit appeal. Watch one episode you'll see what I mean.

Must see BBC documentary covering the films of Fred Zinnemann
16 December 2021
Part of the long running Arena Series. A rarely seen must see documentary for the film buff. An excellent interview with Zinnemann covering the whole history of his film making. Wonderful archive footage and narrative structure with strong narration. As of 2021 this documentary is only viewable on YouTube and not in any BBC back catalogue or or on demand service.

A pointless terrible movie filmed in Namibia... I can't think of much else to say. Not even the watchable Wesley Snipes could do more than raise it from 1 star to 2 star.

A dark Lovecraftian tale
4 December 2021
Despite the low budget and technical limitations, this is an enjoyable little horror film especially for the fans of Lovecraft. Jerry Lacy provides class in the lead role.

Best enjoyed on a dark stormy night!

It's about faith in a piece of cinematic art. That's quite rare
11 November 2021
It's deliberately slow, gentle and wonderfully filmed with sensitive performances. Not perfect but just let it wash over you and try to listen. It's a film you have to really listen to. Listen to the spaces in between the dialogue. Too many reviews miss the point of the film.

Light & silly in the British tradition.
31 October 2021
Silly fun in a light entertainment format. Of course it's not meant to be taken seriously. Of course the actors are hamming it up. It's still an entertaining little package best enjoyed with a nice glass of red French wine.

It could have been great....
3 September 2021
A great cast thrown into nonsense plot, trying to relive the brilliance of the first film but failing. Over tones of the original make it watchable but it lacks the suspense, cinematography and plot quality of the earlier film. Worth a watch just.

Fascinating topic poor execution
14 August 2021
Watch this as creepy pasta and not the paradigm shifting documentary promised by Mr Corbell. Over sold, poorly made, poorly edited with limited content. No 'smoking gun' footage. Only thing of interest is George Knapp's historic tapes. They reveal serious scientists making extraordinary claims. Cattle mutilation video very thought provoking. A film for the dedicated UF0/Skinwalker watcher only.

Its an atmospheric little picture...
27 December 2020
Its not Oscar material but it's a solid and unusual war time horror with a twist at the end; that some reviewers have not enjoyed. It held my interest as the story unfolded. The set and cinematography are great. It won't make you're all time 100 films but it's worth a watch, late at night..... Plus it's always nice to see Billy Zane popping up.

It's a dark tale, leaving you questioning is there any basis to it!
25 September 2020
I've watched the film and read the reviews. At the heart of this piece is the question is it real or fake. This is always the question around Zak Bagans work, he contends his material is factual. Well firstly, I suggest you go to the trouble of doing your own desk top review of the alleged possession. Clearly, few can go to Gary Indiana and fewer still can interview those involved. On the face of it there was a story here so the piece isn't fake at that level. The question is, are the events discussed and filmed real? Are the behaviours those in the house appear to show real or acting. Is Zak Bagans illness and those of others real or faked. You can't know. You can speculate but can't know. Just enjoy the possibility it's real. At that level the film is creepy and entertaining.... Just like the best Creepy Pasta, gives a little chill down the spine!

Can't see the irony or the fun. Simply terrible.
21 July 2020
Quite possibly one of the worst films I've ever seen. Despite what is on paper a strong cast, this film is let down by a terrible script and a mindless plot. Nicholas Cage miscast. Watch 'The Crow' instead.
