The Baker (2022)
appalling
I'm not a fan of Ron Pearlman but will watch almost anything with an open mind. I take each movie as a book waiting to be opened.
This has to be one of the worst movies I've seen this year.
One star, a 'C' movie...as in don't see.
The plot is ridiculous, saying that it has more holes than Swiss cheese is an insult to cheese.
It's a bare mesh linking the the title outline,
Its devoid of character quite amazingly wooden.
Spolier..drug deal gone wrong?
Read spurious actions over a small quantity of drugs.
I really struggle to fathom six stars let alone the eight and ten star ratings, I'm not sure if we watched the same movie.
Section 8 (2022)
watched
I watched Section 8 yesterday.and with all honesty I can't remember anything outstanding about the movie besides how rough Mickey Rourke looks.
The storyline plays out from one generic paperback trope to the next,
Rourke and Lundgren have supporting cameos that add old A-listers names to bolster the casting list.
Section 8 is the second.2022 movie.that I have watched recently.with Dermot Mulroney in the leading role
Just as in Agent Game. (Mel Gibson supporting ) Mulroney.acts up a storm as he is bundled along in an otherwise.unexceptional plot.
Sorry guys its a two star movie that passes some time.
Deus (2022)
another poor review
Firstly I watched the whole film waiting for something 'more'., the buildup,, discovery, the reveal...to the final scenes.
And the film failed to deliver, as previously mentioned in another review; bland.
The plot is made up of blatantly standard tropes, the type that make you say 'Again? And Really? ' out loud..
Cast..all recognisable TV actors who have done much much better in their respective series and soaps.
To quote the storyline..'bedraggled crew', quite possibly hung out to die if this performance was given as Stone the writer and director required,
Sorry, 3/10 for showing enough promise to keep watching but.not great.
House of the Dragon (2022)
Watching but not convinced
I'm struggling between 3 and 5 stars, I wasn't taken by the hype of GoT and didn't watch any of the episodes until the final series was announced.
I binged.1-7 prior to season 8 and really enjoyed the full story.
Unfortunately the I should have applied the same approach to HotD.
HotD steps straight into the politics and intrigue of the Targaryen family, there's enough action to maintain interest.
Whilst HotD is definitely not a 1/10 neither can it be rated 10/10 on the basis of two fairly slow episodes.
Well timed or poorly timed to coincide with the new LOTR production but I'm finding the trend for franchised 'flogging to death' of prequels tedious.
I feel that it hides an inability to.write (or adapt ) anything new.
Animal Kingdom (2016)
mostly boring
What a review title but there you go, Animal Kingdom was mostly boring!
A high octance crime family 'drama' with more in common with the likes of Dallas and Dynasty.
Series 1 started off quite well, as I remember the 'drama' began in series two.and I struggled to the end.
Even 2020's lockdown and furlough boredom couldn't see me through series three and four.
Picked up on Series 6 as a 'finale' and decided to carch up with series 5 first which is when I remembered how S2-3-4 had dismally failed..
Oh Jeez, constantly skipped forward to avoid the sketchy plot and flashbacks.
Season 6 was more and more of the same junk and whilst determined to see it through to the end I was relieved to reach the grand finale.
The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power (2022)
An epic in the making? Or just boring?
Season One update
Right...so I've watched all eight episodes of the first series and my score drops to a stingy 3.
My simple conclusion .... LoTR-TRoP is boring!!
All the CGI and deep backstory setting fails to excite.
A tall order to pre-quel the original stories which have entertained for 80 years.
This one failed; the soup was cold, the bread roll dry and there's a hair in the mashed potato.
You may say that as a new story there is no true comparison between the first three LOTR movies and this.
And there isn't, I wallowed through the movie series because they were the defining books of my childhood alongside The Illustratesd Man and the The Rats of NIMH.
LoTR:TRoP is merely cold, soulless cash-driven pap in the guise of fan-fantasy. 60-70-80 years won't change it.
-----------
I have watched the first two episodes and they deliver the same high budget, high quality CGI production we have been given by the LOTR movies.
Both episodes set the scene and begin to expose the strong characters that the viewers will follow on the journey into post-Silmarillion Middle-Earth.
Because of the depth that needs to be laid out the first two episodes felt slow, dreadfully slow which admittedly created suspense outlining the lingering menace.
As a childhood reader of JRR Tolkien I welcomed the LOTR movie trilogy but and this is a big one- its a prequel.
Ultimately the end is known and the rest is window dressing.
Depending on which side of the fence is taken: JRR Tolkien originality or franchised fan-fiction - viewers will love the series or hate it.
LOTR: The Rings of Power is entertaining, a superb production that as yet doesn't 'do it for me'.
Four stars for being more of the same.
One Way (2022)
well
I watched the whole gritty hour and a half watching a young man clutching at straws as he is slowly dying on a bus.
The IMDb storyline reads better than the movie plays out and takes less time..
My plain and simple advice would be to read the misleading ? Storyline and look for something else to watch.
French Connection, Carlito's Way, Good Time,- talk about over-selling a terrible movie with comparisons to two classics (and Good Time)
I'm sure there will be rave reviews, saying how the actors nailed it, the director created a noir masterpiece capturing the futility of drugs, crime and the gangster life.
Just say no.
Day Shift (2022)
passed the time
An entertaining hour and fifty minutes that jumps straight to the action
Fairly typical of the throw-away.high octane Netflix production Day Shift isn't a watch again.
The lower scoring reviews will say that the plot is a major fail...but the plot is self explanatory even if the tropes and cliches are kind of tired.
Man hunts vampires, kills off less powerful vampires, discovers plot to take over the world, family/friends kidnapped ..kills super-powered elder. Saves family
The fight scenes in particular the vampires were excellent but.in my opinion the best of the action has long passed by the finale.
Yeah .. Snoop Dogg backing up Jamie Foxx, just needs a cameo to give a movie the 'cool factor'
Samaritan (2022)
Ah.....no.
So I watched the movie without reading any reviews or looking at the cast all I knew was the basic the storyline.
It would be a poor show to rate this movie as one star based on my dislike of Stallone movies.
But thats a big clincher for me,.
Full of the eponymous grunting through gritted teeth from Sly in a (rated16) graphic novel styled kids movie.
Just a big no from me, not my genre, doesn't appeal to my inner child.
I 'm struggling to write six hundred characters of useful text in the first review of a new listing.
Maybe just maybe there will be one movie this summer that warrants a gushing 10/10 review.
However five days away from Septemer nd I'm beginning to think that is highly unlikely.
Nope (2022)
Nope-de-nope- ok
Has to be the best of the B movies that I have watched this month.
And let's be honest there's been some absolute tosh released this summer and I think 'Nope' just about claws it's way out of the pit of despair..
The movie started off with promise and kangarooed it's way to the finale.
Not a horror and 'mystery' was apt as the movie never quite hit a nail-biting suspense level.
Daylight !
Yes ..... Sci-fi action filmed mostly in daylight !!
A true unveiling of the ufo, not hidden by murky cinematography
Score.four for the last 30 minutes, could have made a 6- 7 if the first hour and a half hadn't f so slow.
Space Force (2020)
not your average work place comedy
Space Force came up as a suggested watch, wasn't sure about the S1E1 storyline
'A four-star general begrudgingly teams up with an eccentric scientist to get the U. S. military's newest agency - Space Force - ready for lift-off.'
Shame that the series was cut short and cancelled.
Bullet Proof (2022)
truly awful
Pure unadulterated shizzle !!
I wish I could say that I avidly watched the whole thing ...no chance..
The fil-m was playing in the background, I skipped bank a few times,- middle-end when I should have simply closed the player.
Had to give the movie 1 star because there isn't a zero.
The Batman (2022)
dark
Dark characters, dark cinematography.
Someone needs to give the script writers happier drugs...
Just another miserable Batman movie, rehashed and retrashed getting worse in the race to make each one darker than the preceding movie.
Elvis (2022)
50/50, has to be watched even if it is only once.
I made a point of watching the whole film no skipping forward although I backtracked a few scenes.
Unfortunately I couldn't connect with the film, it was 'The Elvis Story'
Nothing new just slightly higher quality remakes of old newsreels and performances.
Excellent performance from Austin Butler, very difficult to put a new face on Elvis.
Rubikon (2022)
slower than a slow thing
I gave the film two stars as the first ten minutes were promising ..or was it the first five??
Apparently my review is to short, so um yeah I should have watched The Waterboy or Happy Gilmore again.
Bel-Air (2022)
Not the Fresh Prince
Its a drama, forget the fun sitcom of the 90s with Will Smiths wisecracks, signature pauses and face pulling and maybe you'll get through it.
I think episode 1 started off well but the series quickly turned into another standard teen angst ultimately disfunctional family drama, watchable but not outstanding.
Joe Pickett (2021)
starting with 5 stars...
..my score may NOT change.
So: If you've read the books...
Having read the first dozen Box/Pickett books my first episode impressions were less than favourable and to be honest didn't improve throughout the remaining nine..
Besides questionable casting, too many flashbacks, dark scenes, general adaptation and bulking out of a 20 year old paperback to develop character appeal to the uninitiated- the series is at best a B-minus.
Whilst the books are hard to put down; I struggled to stop fast-forwarding. Might have made better viewing in 8 episodes or less.
If I hadn't read the books I may not have given the TV series more than two or three episodes. As it was I jumped between scenes trying to reconcile the book plot with that shown on screen.
Reacher (2022)
closer, but not quite.......
The Killing Floor is my favourite Reacher novel and fortunately Tom Cruise is nowhere to be seen ...I hope.
Excellent choice for Reacher.- couldn't think of anyone of suitable stature that fitted the bill.
As already mentioned perhaps not as gritty as imagined.....
The plot seems out of sync, from cells and. Hubble to prison holding tank and Hubble's wife.
Damn...Jaguar? The Hubbles drove Bentleys.
Does it matter? Yes because little changes add up.
And add up and up......
7/10, score may change if the next episodes don't leave me wondering about artistic license .
Edit #1 6/10.
Edit #2 5/10, entertaining but too loosely based on the book and anyone giving the series higher clearly never read the book.
Expected more after the shocking screenplay adaption of the movies but it appears that the pack of writers and directors working on this series took turns at ballsing it up.
Ragnarok (2020)
waiting for series 3- perhaps ?
I was looking for 2013 movie Ragnorak- The Viking Apocalypse with English sub-titles.
And this kept coming to the top of the searches...I won't even entertain Marvel/DC.
Couldn't say that I watched all of both series as t lost interest several times .....cue fast forward to the old Norse mythology and action.
Beforeigners (2019)
Hooked
I dropped on this series completely by accident and binged all six episode.
Superb fantasy sci-fi.
Yes the plots timeline seems patchy, condensed if anything and sadly for CSI lovers the case is not solved overnight..
The plot could have been smoothed with more episodes ....but I also think that a lengthy series dragging out every detail and character can be worse..
Hadn't even thought about' PC lecturing' , perhaps it was lost in translation .
Toungue in cheek clichés highlight the irony of discriminating against someone who had been living there a thousand years before.
Contrary to many who can't.follow a program with subtitles I enjoy subtitled foreign language films and series because you have to pay attention.
Dexter: New Blood (2021)
slow
I read the books first and found the Dexter series 1 thru 8 watchable but lacking.
And as s with the vast majority of fan driven extended runs- the.8 series and 90+ episodes wore thin.
Dexter:New Blood has been.slow to start and I would hope that the plot doesn't thicken to a standstill .
No Time to Die (2021)
cliche or just everything you expect from a Bond?
I'm of the age where I thought that good Bond films ceased with George Lazenby.
Really? Yes, after over a decade of Moore's eyebrow curling , Dalton, Brosnan and ultimately miserable , troubled Craig- 'No Time To Die' was almost certainly the best Bond film in 50 years.
I might have to watch it again.
Red Notice (2021)
Another one
Another fast action fast talking Ryan Reynolds action movie,...with Dwayne Johnson.
Entertaining but ultimately forgettable and not in a 'watch again' way.
Professor T (2021)
Remake......lost in translation?
Fortunately (or unfortunately) I watched the original Belgian series which I thought was brilliant.
Maybe without being able to compare the two; the UK version might be refreshingly wierd and quirky.
Actors well matched to their characters, the 6/10 is purely for their performance.
Trigger Point (2021)
Trigger Pointless
Started off slowly and for a while thought this may turn out to be a good film.
Unfortunately it didn't; half way through the 'rescue' I started to play solitaire on my phone.
I honestly thought that much of the movie was the storyline fluff? Between the levels of an RPG.
