Love Wedding Repeat (2020)
Unbearable!
Frustratingly avoidable situations turned into a chaos. Some horrible characters with antisocial traits are passed on for a "situational comedy"; and to the apologists, no, this is not British sense of humour.
Never Have I Ever (2020)
Nothing original.
This is an autobiographical and a classic Mindy Kaling show. Her main female character is a continuation from her previous works. Devi's character is interchangeable with Mindy Lahiri in the Mindy Project and Molly Patel in Late Night. The sense of humour and character traits remain the same because Mindy is playing Mindy. The cultural nuances offer a learning experience to those who are unfamiliar with Indian culture and Hindu religion but to those who have seen Mindy's other works, this offers the same formula and routine. Swapping the cultural context in a high-school drama is not original.
Angrezi Medium (2020)
Lost opportunity!
The film has a great cast and a few entertaining moments but no coherent story to tell and neither the conviction in the father-daughter duo's single minded pursuit of studying in a college in London. It seems like there are several individual performances stitched together in the edit to make it into a film. Kareena, Dimple and Pankaj were all casualty of that inconsistency in the story. This was a great casting coup let down by a poor script.
Sir (2018)
Heartwarming!
There is so much dignity in both characters, no underlying maliciousness, that it breaks your heart. The class structure is embedded in the society but it is also fluid as long as people don't internalize it. The real challenge for the maid character was to rise above her own mental restrictions.
Mentalhood (2020)
Stereotypical!
It is cringeworthy. Loud, one-dimensional characters reinforcing typical stereotypes about women with children. The lead female characters unapologetically shame each other and use devaluing and toxic behaviour. This is not how adults communicate in a civil society. The characters have no concept of boundaries and self awareness. This show offers no new perspective on modern day challenges of motherhood instead it reinforces the stereotypes.
Love Aaj Kal (2020)
Disaster!
Imtiaz ali has no clue about the subject he is trying to own. Stop abusing Rumi and Kabir to justify your lack of self awareness. A man-child (Karthik) who uses tinder to hookup suddenly starts talking about rumi and kabir's concept of love with her hookup date with no emotional investment at all. Imtiaz again uses stalking and toxic relationships to justify "longing" and "sufi love". Stop portraying sufi love as escapism or "running to the hills" as if madness is his fetish. Mediocre direction and writing, no storyline, no entertainment factor at all. There are so many themes he has mixed together in this film without any reason and logic that a review is not enough to give Imtiaz ali a reality check. Don't waste your hard earned money.
