Late Night with the Devil (2023)
Pure artistic film making with a wallop
If you grew up in the 70's watching Johnny Carson and the slew of "wanna be" talk shows that would do anything to beat his rating, you will love the look and pacing of this film...it is spot on for that era. Just remember it is horror movie. It starts off as a bio - documentary of the begining of Jack Delroys talk show "Night Owls" and ends where his Halloween show begins during a ratings sweep where he is determined to get the market share from Carson whatever it takes. At that point, the show begins and the creators deliver it EXACTLY like we have been taken back in time to 1977 and we are watching a cheesey talk show. He has a few guests, a mind reader, a skeptic magician and his final guests which are a doctor and a young girl that was possessed by a demon, planning on communicating with the demon again on live TV....sounds great for ratings, huh? WRONG. We as the viewer are treated like any other late night talk show home viewer as all of this unfolds before our eyes, with also being asked to join in on the fun. The pace in the begining moves exactly like a 70's talk show with the commercial breaks taking us behind the scenes for the back story. By the 3rd act, this cheesey talk show goes completely off the rails insane and that is all I am going to give up. Dastmalchian devours this role as he delivers a text book style preformance as a talk show host from the 70's that is stressing over ratings. It's more of a period piece then a "found footage" film that creatively excites, bores and flabbergasts the viewer (just like those talk shows do) then horrifies you. This is a movie the creators should be real proud of because it takes the viewer on a nostalgic trip that doesn't miss a beat for authenticity then punches you in the face for doing so. Don't miss this one.
San Daikaijû Chikyû Saidai no Kessen (1964)
The 1st monster movie I ever saw, and my favorite to this day
I want to say it was 1965, I was 5 years old in New York when my dad woke me up, brought me downstairs (as my mother objected) to the brand new color TV he bought. There were 13 channels 12 and UHF which was "13". He put on NBC (channel 4 back then in the city) because on Sunday nights they had a program called "The International Film Festival" and tonights film "Gidrah, the 3 headed monster". After that, I sold. This film is fantasic regardless of it's age, basically there's a BIG EGG, there are a couple of big monsters Godzilla and Rodan that have a problem with each other and proceed to pound the SNOT out of each other, while the egg cracks open..out pops the crazy 3 headed monster that proceeds to wreck the city and beat on the other 2 monsters.... UNTIL to tiny adorable island girls (that can speak BIG MONSTER verbally and telepatically) reach out to thr Queen of Monsters MOTHRA to swing by, talk some sense into Gozilla and Rodan to join forces and BRING DOWN KING GHIDORAH. Great timeless monster fun. Enjoy...I have probably 400 times🙂
The Boogeyman (2023)
King probably hates this film, it did nothing special
Why do you take a King story and treat it like all the other crap and think you are doing something great? Com'on. Ok we have a premise of Mom died..young kids..stupid dad..and a freaked out guy that throws their world into a freaky freaked out shiz show by meeting with dad (the therapist) about his kids dying..then rocks his world on the down slope. Way TOO DARK FILMING is my 1st FU for this film..2nd is..what the HELL is going on? Doors slaming..opening..kid screaming and THEN all we get is shadows...talking points....and semi dark creature crap? Is this director from 1970?? They needed to treat it as King created it...show it from the begining and cause it to be creepier as it goes on. Big disapointment for me.
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 (2023)
The reason why James Gunn is the best for the DCU
With an entire different feel then the previous efforts, some how the director delivered something very special with a totally different flavor and really made it work. This time it is a story about one of the crew, like and origin story treated as a drama with everybody we loved from the 1st films, but with a darker more serious tone. All of our players show up in a task to help save the life of Rocket and during that task we learn everything about Rocket from his intial struggles to the reason why he is in this the 1st place. The Guardians are a bit different this time around..but are awesome as usual. James Gunn is on his way to taking the DCU to a quality level like this. Bravo.
Tulsa King (2022)
Got any of that apricot dip?
Stallone re-invents himself again. If you grew up with him he's our under dog, champion, crazy war hero and mercenary. It is very cool to see him taking on the role of a nasty criminal that pretends to care about anybody other than, himself...which is how real gangsters are, it's all about earning and he gets the "GO" from the start.
The casting and director made 1st class decisions on this one because there is chemistey abound in this tome. You got a rag tag goodfella exiled to tulsa, ok...he makes the best of it. If you love Stallone and crime dramas...this is a golden experience to see him give us a new version of him. Check it out.
Surveillance (2008)
Unexpected, great crime drama
The reason I rated it so high is besides the art itself, the people behind the scenes gave this a flavor where everything works, just as it should in this location setting. Then you have a wonderful cast of people you cannot stand or are built for you not to trust. There is murder, mayhem, twists, turns, excellent story and executed flawlessly. I'm never stumped, this one surprised me. The best part of this film is how it plays with your ingrained perception of criminals and authorities, then smashes both worlds together like mashed potatoes and brussel sprouts in a blender. If you love a really twisted crime drama, this puppy should be the 1st one on your list.
Weird: The Al Yankovic Story (2022)
Weird Al parodies the lyrics of his life, brilliant
This was a fantastic dive into a film version of what Weird Al is all about. The film meticulosly plays out exactly in the flavor of the Weird Al we all know through his various ways of entertaining us over the years. The pace and editing was skillful, the characters were all likeable, the music takes you right back to the time you first heard it. Then as this film progresses it becomes totally insane and man you are just going to crack up. Sorry I'm being vague but I don't want to ruin it for anybody. If you been around since the 80's you will really appreciate this film as a retrospective and WTF journey led by Weird Al, about Weird Al and only as Weird Al would tell it. Loaded with great belly laughs this needs to be on your radar, totally worth the time.
Barbarian (2022)
Simple great effort on all angles
From the depiction of a failed Detroit to the premise of a bad reservation, this film has a keen sense of realistic forboding dred. Cinematography for what this film represents was stellar. Acting was above par. Definately worth the ticket sale, pretty orignal and I look forward to more from this director. Bill is awesome as usual and he is working his way into becoming a great actor that you can depend on. The scenery hurt, makes you glad you don't ever want to see it again and the back story is vomit inducing. This is horrible story telling that makes you hope that this type of thing is point blank fiction, where people like this only exsist in our nightmares. Highly recommended for fans of this type of ride.
The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent (2022)
He plays a semi cartoon version of himself that is brilliant
Regardless of whatever the movie is, you know that Cage is one of those actors that is always worth the admission. This outing is pure fun. He totally plays an over the top version of himself that is having more fun with it then we are. He makes no effort not to make fun of himself and being along for the ride is a wonderful experience. This is Cage at his comic best.
The Gray Man (2022)
Makes the grade
I liked it, above board excellent action flick. I'm not one to put a dollar figure on what a film costs or drill down every spec of it, but the cast came off well, the story was a good one, not a blockbuster but if I paid money to see it at a theater I wouldn't have left feeling robbed. Gosling, Evans and the Sling Blade guy were great and made it compelling and interesting. The bond girl could have been replaced by a wooden indian. They should have cast a solid female supporting actor that has some moxie..like Gail Gadot or Sophia Vegara which would have boosted the reviews and added value to the film as the female protagonist. But all the same not perfect but very worth the time.
Crimes of the Future (2022)
Cronenberg? Thank you sir, may I have another.
Watch this 3 times so you can make sure you get back the "fall asleep" times you may endure. He shapes and idea of the future (by his petspective)"mindbogglingly". Brilliant Cronenberg.
Srpski film (2010)
A Shock Rock, for BENIJMANZ
Ok well if you are a normal genre fan FOREVER that will ALWAYS flock to a film that had been BANNED in every country....see this one, then throw up and wonder why you never made a film. Have a good time, because somebody else did.
Just WATCH it.
The Eyes of My Mother (2016)
Stochold syndrome revenge with lunacy
Done well, terribly unsettling, executed well. A great tale of woe.
Artistically perfect from the TV in the background to the acts being committed without explanation.
Worth a view.
Killing Gunther (2017)
Good pacing, fun, worth the time.
Great fun for what it is about and it's execution. Made better than most films these days and keeps you interested with good editing and content. Thanks.
Chucky (2021)
That little P#%&K is back and what a great welcome😁
Complete gem for old school Chucky fans and maybe new. ALEX VINCENT and BRAD DORIF are in it as well! Painting this as a SURE WIN for the right ingrediants!!!
This is a quality revisit with the same nuances as the original. A great effort on all angles.
I look forward to the rest of it😁
Kate (2021)
Winstead OWNED it
High octaine race against time action flick with the perfect elements.
1. Super hardcore female lead
2. Over the top kills
3. Japan back drop
4. Yakuza
Who could ask for anything more. Totally worth your time.
Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark (2019)
Awesome, refreshing monster movie.
You like monster/creature movies? This one delivers the best horribile "there's a monster after me" vibe then not many recent others. See it.
Trick (2019)
Good genre piece
It was fun, but not one breast was shown that I can remember. But made well all the same and had it's own flavor. Worth your time.
Willy's Wonderland (2021)
Crazy fun with THE CAGE.
As always, it's entertainment ALA CAGE. Damn worth the time and streaming dollars. See it for some horribly wierd laughs. Thanks for the fun😁
Nobody (2021)
The kitty cat bracelete...lol..GREAT FUN!
Best action ride in cinema this year. Go see it if you need a good laugh with a John Wick flavor. Thanks.😁
Promising Young Woman (2020)
Cassandra must be a Gemini😁
What a great piece of art. Why you may think I say that? Well the director and protangonist, skillfully bring you up and down HARD. Cassandra is a multifaced woman that is fasinating to watch because you don't know what to expext from her. This is a new genre of film. I'd like to coin it as .....
"Hallmark Horror".
Definately worth your time, rent it.
House of 1000 Corpses (2003)
Perfectly executed pyramid piece
Hit all the notes of a 70s horror movie. WELL DONE and worth your time.
Unhinged (2020)
Crow needs a Oscar for this one
The rest of the actors left me limp. Reason being is they just weren't likeable.
Naked Lunch (1991)
Loved it, and would like to see it again.
David, please have your people make a deal with a streaming service on this one.
Videodrome (1983)
26 years later..still total psych art.
Had to rent it after seeing his kid "Brandons" two efforts that were stellar (at best). ANTIVIRAL and POSSESSOR ....Rent both of those..you will be glad I told you.
VIDEODROME: Watch it 3 times. 1st time, to confuse and shock you. 2nd time to put you on the "WTF?" area. Then #3 to form YOUR interpretation of it.
Like all DC1 (thats my name for him, since he had a kid show up...lol) movies...he takes a premise, and DISsECTS it. See this one...timeless and thought provoking.
