Spartacus: Blood and Sand (2010)
Waste of time - violence and porn
Violence and porn... The high audience rating fooled me into giving this series a brief trial, but apparently this is a love it or hate it series. The violence is slow motion and freeze frame, the sex scenes graphic and boring. I loved The Gladiator, but this series was poorly written, filmed, styled and directed. I felt sorry for the actors who had signed up for this mess. There are so many great historical drama series out there- -- Outlander, The Last Kingdom, Hell on Wheels -- all of which have sex and violence, but well done. Also try The Sopranos, or Yellowstone. So thus I add my 1 star review to the others.
Run (2013)
Too dark for me
This series was well acted, but the links or connections were minimal. Viewed as four stories, they were each dark and depressing, and there were no meaningful resolutions to the dilemmas the protagonists faced. This may be realistic, but it is not entertaining. I also felt the each episode spiraled further down. I watched all four episodes, hoping for some type of redemption in the end. There was none. If you want a slice of life that is full of despair and hopelessness, this is the series for you, but I prefer to be entertained, uplifted, or informed. I can't criticize the positive reviews. Just know what to expect.
East of Everything (2008)
Way too soapy
I usually like British and Australian shows because the acting is great and the characters don't have that perfectly groomed look so characteristic of American television. The photography was wonderful in this series, a beautiful and interesting location. The acting was quite good, but the story was way too dramatic and soapy. The storyline was all over the place. Every character was somewhat tragic, and the occasional comic scenes seemed inappropriate.and the ending was unrealistic. I have to confess that I watched much of the first season then skipped to the last two episodes of the second season.
Garden Rescue (2016)
Wonderful garden show
The garden makeovers in this show are amazing and the varied designs for various wants and needs, children, accessibility, wildlife, & more are very interesting. The three designers have a good report, and I enjoy the humor too.
The Long Call (2021)
The book is better.
I didn't have a problem with the actors, they were fine. This adaptation Ann Cleeve's book for TV was more family drama than murder mystery. Of course all good mysteries have secrets that are revealed as the investigation progresses, but this filmed version of the story was too long. I think it would have been better if it had been edited to two episodes rather than four.
