Whirlwind (2007)
Too little reality
Most films in the LGBT genre are not good. 'Whirlwind' is no exception. Full of shallow characters & clichés. The script is very superficial & pretentious. It could have worked if they had focused on one storyline or one idea, but it is so full of characters & story lines, you can never truly invest yourself to anyone or anything. The acting is very stiff & seems melodramatic, forced, and amateur. Overall, the film fails on all levels. Even the sex scenes are not believable.
I would love to say I enjoy more movies like this, but most are awful! I wish the GLBT community would demand better entertainment, but it seems like naked bodies & sex are all we are ever given (and too bad most of us are appeased by that).
If you're looking for a "gay" movie with substance, see 'Save Me', also from 2008.
The X Files: I Want to Believe (2008)
Just as good as the series. Very satisfying.
Nope, no aliens here. And that's OK. This movie really surprised me. It examined the persona's of Scully & Mulder & furthered their relationship delicately. I liked it more than the last movie. Not a lot of action or big revelations(I'm afraid people will expect more), it's just an average X-File with loads of emotion. Besides Gillian Anderson's AMAZING performance, what I really admired here is that it quenched the thirst of all X-Files fans. We have finally gotten a satisfying resolution after 6 years of waiting (I have to admit, I kinda missed Doggett & Reyes. Wonder what became of them, but oh well). It also examined faith & loyalty, in a way, presenting the biggest X-File of all: God himself. If there is never another movie (and I hope there is!), it's okay. I am satisfied with where they left it. Well done agents. I believe.
Superman Returns (2006)
SUPERMAN RETURNS--man, does he ever !!!
Whimsical, exciting and bold, SUPERMAN RETURNS brought back magic to me I haven't felt since I was a little kid watching Christopher Reeve in the original films. Brandon Routh was REMARKABLE in the part! He bears such an uncanny resemblance to Reeve in the film, it gave me chills! There could not have been a better choice for Kevin Spacey as Lex Luther. He plays the villain with such suave finesse, giving the character a little bit of his own charm. Kate Bosworth plays Lois as a new woman. She is engaged with a child now, so it is assumed the way she played Lois had to be changed with the times. She is much less vulnerable in this one; much prettier and smarter than Margot Kidder's Lois. Perhaps one of the film's best surprises was Parker Posey as Luther's sidekick, Kitty. Posey is one of today's most underrated actresses. She always has a natural magnetism and she was delightful. The film obviously tries hard not to upset fans of the old Superman, and gives us just enough of the old to balance with the new. The film's only flaw is the last 30 minutes. It is a bit attenuous, could have been 20 minutes shorter, but I loved every minute of it anyways. Being a part of the "old" Superman generation, I have to say that I am pleasantly enticed and I actually hope for more to come. Grade: A
