After Life (2019– )

for those that dislike Mr. Gervais' comedy, please take a watch
11 March 2023
Comedians are philosophers. Whether you enjoy their work or their perspective, their skill, or their dedication, great existential pain creates great comics. I have heard many friends and acquaintances comment that Ricky Gervais' comedy is cruel, mean, or disgusting. I challenge and suggest one watches a couple episodes. The depth of emotion and talented writing make this a must watch. Obviously Mr. Gervais is a mensch, a human of great experience and dedication to expressing the trials and tribulations of life that is universal. This show makes you laugh, cry, remember, and consider the issues of life that we all share.

we are spoiled as Americans for movies....
13 January 2021
I really wanted to like this , as I like the actor who plays the lead and I like French cinema. BUT- it has been said that the lasting 20th -21st century legacy of America will be Hollywood, visual media, and music. This runs like a 2020 "B" movie....the pacing, the supporting actors, the onscreen fighting, the camera movements- they all seem derivative of established processes that most modern Western cinephiles take for granted. I do not enjoy criticizing any artist, but I had to stop watching after a couple episodes. This is modern pulp....but if one is in the mood...?.I do admit I had no experience of the "original" Lupin, so the modern comic book stylings may be appropriate.

Fun but tepid accounts of tripping from major and minor ill informed celebrities
15 May 2020
I have loved and used psychedelics for 30 years. I have never been a "major tripper", the title reserved for those people that do "heroic" doses of psychotropic substances. This was a fun first step that America and the UK needs to bring a mature, responsible attitude towards a subject that has had major effects on human consciousness for 10,000 years. Including psychedelics in the failed "war on drugs" has not benefitted anyone. Sting is incorrect that peyote, or any hallucinogen, contains strychnine. This is an old myth that has been kicked around for 50 years. It is refreshing in our celebrity worshipping culture to realize that "stars" are just as misinformed, fearful, fun, cowardly, silly, inspiring, incorrect, woo woo, and adventurous as any segment of the population. Rosie Perez was very candid and remembers the joy, intelligence, and wonder that psychonauts seek. Ben Stiller is a dud, and leaves a cynical taste for the audience and for commercial comedy. There are many gems here, and for virgins seeking the "experience", this flick can have a comforting and positive influence.

A Funky Cringefest
13 November 2018
Wow-when I first became aware of this I was pleasantly surprised-"''What, 2 totally different actors from 2 of my favorite all time shows-Deadwood and The IT Crowd"...an unexpected combo.... I didn't really see the DeVito version from the 90s so had no reference to that production. A bit derivative at times, a bit totally out of left field, I am constantly being surprised with plot twists.I am actually on the 6th episode but had to express my admiration and enjoyment of this modernized version. There are other cast members that one may not expect to see working together, and characters we have seen evolving the past couple of years in other popular series-brutal gangstress, awkward relationships, abstract friendship connections, constant left turns....this is super fun and holds surprises for the most cynical and hip viewers

Godless (2017)

Enjoyable and rapidly improving new western series
8 December 2017
This adventurous and mildly risqué new western series from Netflix has been a pleasant surprise. Though lacking the brilliance and erudition of Deadwood, the writing is unpredictable, fun, and mature. The characters may not be as broad as Hell on Wheels and are not derivative, with many new young talents to engage one's attention. Some of the lesbian love scenes seem a bit gratuitous, but sex scenes and dialogue are much more teen friendly and less violent and brutal than the hardcore episodes of Deadwood. My first thought with having so many young Brits playing main characters was that it was a UK interpretation, but the accents are flawless. There are enough pedigreed and familiar American actors to balance the mix and the finished production leaves it binge-worthy. The scenery and cinematography is as clear and crisp as May in Santa Fe. Definitely more relationship rich than action packed, with humor, sexiness, and multiple narratives weaving to create an original work that probably has at least 2 or 3 seasons. We love our westerns in the US, and I will always miss Deadwood, but Godless provides the latest generation of the genre with a right fine balance of grit, gals, and giddyup.

rehash of old material designed for a 5 year old with sappy Disney writing
22 April 2009
i don't know why, but after all the hype on NPR i thought this was a new movie.....all the best footage has been used for BBC docs and NatGeo projects that you have seen if you are interested in nature programs...it has been repackaged with sappy narration and over-dramatic music for Disney to take advantage of Earth Day-there are great moments, and it is always nice to listen to Darth Vader.......oops,........... James Earl Jones speak, but I had hoped for a ground breaking movie , considering the new camera technology used in the making of this film......it has been sanitized for a child audience, so one can actually see better footage for free on youtube ....i feel that we are due for something as ground breaking as Koyannisquatsi (sic) and this movie is certainly not it
